Webb Shows Skills At NLA 7on7

One of the Midwest's top players was in action last weekend in Youngstown at the New Level Athletics 7on7, and Damon Webb impressed with his overall ability. The Detroit Cass Tech cornerback is a four-star prospect.

Detroit Cass Tech has long been known for producing top football talent, and cornerback Damon Webb is a four-star prospect. He was in action last week at the New Level Athletics 7on7 in Youngstown.

Webb, 6-foot, 175-pounds, starred at both wide receiver and defensive back before an injury forced the Ohio State commit to leave the action.

"I like playing 7on7, because it lets me work on my technique which will help me be better next fall," Webb stated. "Primarily this is an opportunity to work on man coverage, and getting my footwork right. It's also very competitive, and gets players working together to win games."

"I'm the type of cornerback that's an all-around player," he added. "I can play press coverage, or I can play off, but I have the ability to come up and hit people in run support. I'm working on everything, because I'm not satisfied at all with my game. I have a lot of work to do to become the player I want to be."

His commitment to Ohio State three weeks before National Signing Day came as a shock to most observers, but Webb had made his mind up much earlier.

"Ohio State was always my top school, and I knew I was going to commit there for a while, it was just a question of when would I do it," he admitted. "It was just the right time. I would say I knew during my season that was where I wanted to go, but I wanted to wait until the time was right to make that announcement."

"I have a great relationship with Coach (Kerry) Coombs, and he and I speak all the time," Webb stressed. "Ever since the beginning of my recruitment, he would come to Cass, and he was my main recruiter of all the schools after me."

"I also have a great relationship with Coach (Urban) Meyer and we speak on the phone every once in a while," he continued. "I committed to Coach Meyer on a visit, and my family and I were in his office. Once I committed, he jumped up and gave me a big hug and welcomed us into the family. My parents were very happy."

Even with a commitment to Ohio State, other programs have not stopped trying to recruit Webb.

"I'm just solid with Ohio State, and I will not be taking any other visits at all," Webb exclaimed. "I'm done with my recruiting, and I'm trying to recruit other players to Ohio State. I'm concentrating in Michigan, and I've been talking to Drake Harris a lot. I'm also talking to my teammates at Cass, especially Jayru (Campbell), Mike (Weber), and Josh (Alabi), so they can visit and see what Ohio State is all about."

"I took a lot of heat from other fans, because nobody saw this coming, but I had to do what I had to do," he continued. "Ohio State fans love me, so I guess that's all that matters. I'm 100% committed to Ohio State, so it doesn't really matter what people think, to be honest."
