OSU Weekly Recruiting Update

What has gone on in the past week with Ohio State and their attempt to secure another top flight recruiting class? Derek Young takes a look at the 2014 Buckeye recruiting efforts.

Chase WinovichOhio State and Michigan appear to be neck and neck for the top linebacker in Pennsylvania. A decision could come at any time. Despite all the Michigan talk of late, the Buckeyes remain in good shape. Nevada's equal sign has been placed on Winovich.

Derek Kief – The Lonnie Johnson commitment does indeed make his recruitment interesting. If he wants in Ohio State's class it would be wise to make a decision sooner rather than later. It may already be too late.

New Offers:

The Ohio State staff was busy again this week sending out offers to tight end Mavin Saunders of Texas and defensive end Trent Harris and running back Dacorius Law of Florida. They also proved to be interested in Texas' class once again, offering Longhorn commits Jermaine Roberts, a cornerback, and defensive tackle Courtney Garnett.

The third Ohio prospect was offered in the 2015 class in defensive end Hjalte Froholdt, joining athletes Eric Glover-Williams and Jerome Baker.

Offer coming soon?

Kendall Sheffield – The Missouri City, Texas cornerback has been offered by Baylor, LSU, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas A&M already. His father told Scout that he believes Ohio State and Alabama could be next.

Calvin Strong – The Omaha, Nebraska running back in the class of 2015 has already began to garner attention from the Buckeyes' coaching staff.

Top Groups:

Jalen Tabor – He announced a final list of schools through his twitter account that included Maryland, Florida, Vanderbilt, Alabama, Tennessee, Florida State, Michigan, and Ohio State. Tabor has stated his affinity to play for a school in the SEC.

Justus Reed – After receiving his offer from Ohio State over a week ago, Reed told Scout that his top two schools were Ohio State and North Carolina. His father played for the Tar Heels and he already has a visit scheduled to visit the campus in Chapel Hill.

Upcoming College Decisions:

Demarre Kitt – The standout receiver from Georgia has a top three of Clemson, Ohio State, and Tennessee with a college decision set for June 10. Clemson looks like they will be the pick.

Jamarco Jones – The Chicago offensive lineman is ranked in Scout's top 100 and lists a top four of Notre Dame, Ohio State, Michigan State, and Michigan. The Buckeyes have been out front for a while after multiple visits to Columbus.

Brandon Harris – The Bossier City (LA) Parkway signal caller had a note-worthy week. He first set a decision date of July 18. A few days later Harris announced his final seven that included Auburn, Alabama, LSU, Texas A&M, Ohio State, Ole Miss, and Baylor. He still seems open but the Buckeyes need to get him on campus before his decision to have a chance. LSU gets the first visit on May 25.

Top 2015 Running Back Sets Visit:

Jacques Patrick – He has a chance to be a top 100 player for the class of 2015. He already holds 38 offers with Florida and Florida State being on top early. Patrick told Scout that he would be making visits to Notre Dame, Ohio State, Michigan State, and Michigan the second week of June.

The Orlando running back goes out of his way to stay in contact with the Ohio State staff, most notably Urban Meyer, frequently early on in his recruitment process. That shows a definite genuine interest from the star prospect and there's a solid chance he will be at Ohio State when the Buckeyes host Buffalo in the 2013 opener.

Ohio State Coaches in Florida:

The Buckeyes' were busy on the recruiting trail in southwest Florida in the past week. Two prospects they expressed interest in were 2016 linebacker Zach Lackman from Island Coast and 2015 Safety James Brunson from Fort Myers.

Lackman is a kid on a mission. Geoff Vogt brought information on him to the board explaining that he would graduate high school in two and a half years, and that he would leave high school already a "junior in college" after all his AP courses.

Brunson has not played football very long but will camp this summer at Ohio State, Florida State, and Miami.

Committed Elsewhere:

Alex Bars to Notre Dame.
