Two Sets Of Favorites

Defensive end Tyree Owens (Oviedo, Fla.) has two sets of school favorites - two that have offered and two that have not.

Tyree Owens (Oviedo, Fla.) had a big spring. He's one of the top defensive end prospects from the Sunshine State so he picked up some new offers and became a more versatile talent on the Oviedo defensive front.

"Spring ball was great and I got a lot of training in. I became better, faster and stronger and I learned a new position."

For Owens he played a lot of the five-technique on their three man front. He put his new position to the test this past Friday in their spring game against a good Lake Mary team.

"It was different for me," Owens said. "I had to learn a new role and responsibilities and keys. I know that I can't lose contain. I just need to practice more at it. But I did all right."

Owens, 6-foot-4 and 240-pounds, is more of a defensive end in a 4-3 scheme. That's what most teams are recruiting him at after his 21 tackles for a loss and five sacks this past season.

"I can go get the quarterback," Owens said. "I can get past people and find the ball."

Owens had 11 scholarship offers going into last week from schools like Georgia Tech, West Virginia, Virginia, Cincinnati, Duke and Boston College. Then he picked up Wisconsin and Wake Forest in the middle of last week and Minnesota and Florida Atlantic today. All told he now sits on 15.

"Of the teams that have offered West Virginia and Georgia Tech are the two that stand out but Wisconsin is up there to. They have a great school and a great program. But of course West Virginia was the first school that offered me and that means so much. That hits home to me. They have a great coaching staff and I enjoy speaking with them. Plus, I know I am one of the guys that they really want and that sit atop their recruiting list. That's a pretty awesome feeling.

"With Georgia Tech I love coach [Lamar] Owens. He is just awesome. I know with him he wants to make sure I succeed as a person not just as a player. He talks to you like you are family. Plus, I have an aunt that lives in Atlanta. I have been there a couple of times and it seems like a nice place."

While the Mountaineers and Yellow Jackets are his front runners who have offered there are two other teams that stand out for Owens.

"I would love to see Florida and LSU offer me. They are both recruiting me but it's not like these other schools. I have talked with Florida a few times. I was supposed to go up there but [coach [Will] Muschamp was busy. I love the LSU atmosphere. I have friends that live there and I know they play a little defense, they are showing some interest."

The Buckeyes came by to see his teammate but what Owens did on film jumped out.

"Ohio State came by to see Chris Davis," Owens said. "We showed him my tape and they are now recruiting me. They are bringing it to their defensive coordinator."

Two other local teams appear to be in the hunt but neither has offered as well in Central Florida and South Florida.

"I know UCF has offered because they only have like 12 scholarships this year," Owens said. "I don't understand why USF hasn't. I went down there for a junior day and it was awesome. While I was there I tried on a jersey and it sure felt right. The facilities are awesome and they have a great physical therapy school. I enjoy talking with their coaches and I like coach [Willie] Taggert."

Owens doesn't have any plans this summer but he does know he wants to hit the books.

"I want to take two classes over because I want a better GPA," Owens. "It's good but not that good and it can be better. So I don't really know my plans this summer."
