Smitherman offered by Ohio State

2015 cornerback Maurice Smitherman added another offer to his collection from Ohio State recently. He talked about what the offer from the Buckeyes meant to him.

Adamsville (AL) Minor cornerback Maurice Smitherman has added to his offer list after receiving one recently from Ohio State.

The Buckeyes' staff got in touch with Smitherman and his coach once September 1 hit on the calendar and revealed their strong interest in the high school junior.

"Coach (Kerry) Coombs notified my coach that Ohio State was offering me," said Smitherman. "I was shocked. That is a big time school and I like what they are doing with their program right now. I really like their coach and I followed Urban Meyer since he was at Florida."

Ohio State already explained what they see in Smitherman and what side of the ball they prefer him on.

"They really like my speed and awareness for the ball," Smitherman pointed out. "I play a little offense with my high school team but not a lot. Ohio State likes me at defensive back but have compared me to Jeff Demps and Chris Rainey because I have their same type of speed."

Smitherman spoke about what he liked about the Buckeyes' program.

"I just love the way they are rebuilding the program under Urban Meyer and they have a chance to win championships," he explained. "They have the right quarterback for it and the right coaches. I think they are the team that can beat Alabama and the SEC schools for the title."

"I'd like to visit Ohio State but it's a trip I will probably have to wait to take until later on in my process," he added.

Two other schools could also be close to offering Smitherman, he believes.

"Alabama and Florida State have shown quite a bit of interest early on," he mentioned. "I think they could be my next offers."

Smitherman will visit Georgia this weekend for their home opener against South Carolina.
