Recruiting News and Notes 9/23

The Buckeyes host a handful of official visitors this weekend. They also could bring in a few top 2015 prospects on unofficial visits soon.

The New Jersey tight end visits Ohio State this weekend. It will be an official visit and the Buckeyes are in a good spot. Penn State is the competition and will also host Gesicki afterwards. I like Ohio State's chances.

The Buckeyes host two wide receivers on official visits this weekend. Travis Rudolph and Johnnie Dixon, both from Florida, have Ohio State in their top group and it will be the Buckeye coaching staff's chance to make the impression.

Ohio State is battling Miami and Alabama for Dixon and will take on the Florida schools for Rudolph's pledge. Both are on top of the Buckeyes' wishlist.

Ohio State's coaching staff was on the road in the last week making stops at several places.

Defensive line coach Mike Vrabel checked out the Winton Woods squad that has some young prospects to keep an eye on, in addition to defensive tackle Daniel Cage. Cage is an in-state prospect to watch in the last few months of the 2014 cycle.

Running backs Coach Stan Drayton spent some time in the state of Georgia. Drayton was at Lovejoy to check in on 2015 receiver Preston Williams. He was on hand for Bishop McEachern's game as well, which is the school of 2015 running back Taj Griffin and offensive tackle Chuma Edoga. Both hold offers from Ohio State.

2015 Memphis (TN) University School offensive tackle Drew Richmond is a top target in the 2015 class. Ohio State was at his school last week and watched him in action on Friday night.

Wideout Preston Williams committed to Tennessee over the weekend. The 2015 standout has an Ohio State offer and was high on the Buckeyes before making his early pledge. Despite his verbal commitment to Tennessee, I think Ohio State will remain firmly in the mix. He remains open and will continue to listen.

2015 Jersey City (NJ) St. Peter's Prep quarterback Brandon Wimbush holds an early offer from Ohio State and will visit Columbus to see the Buckeyes in late October when they take on Penn State.

A teammate of his, Minkah Fitzpatrick, also has an offer from Ohio State. Fitzpatrick is one of the top cornerbacks in the country for the 2015 class. Wimbush let me know that he expects Fitzpatrick to accompany him on the visit.

One of the top linebackers in the 2015 class is Malik Jefferson of Mesquite, Texas. He will be a tough pull out of the state as Texas and Texas A&M have already recruited him pretty hard. I would expect his recruitment to play out until the near end.

Other schools in play for Jefferson are LSU, Alabama, Oregon, and Ohio State. The Buckeyes have had recent success in the state and will get a look from Jefferson. He hopes to be able to take visits outside of the state after his season. Ohio State could be a potential stop for the five-star standout.
