How To Attack The MSU Defense

There's little doubting Michigan State has one of the best defenses in the country statistically, but that doesn't mean Ohio State won't move the ball against the Spartans. We take a look at how teams have had success vs. MSU and some of the keys to the Buckeyes' offensive attack on Saturday.

So yesterday, I wrote a piece on why Michigan State's defense has been able to lead the nation in both rushing defense and passing efficiency defense – not to mention total defense – this year.

In other words, the Spartans' defense is an impenetrable force, right?

Of course not.

While five of Michigan State's Big Ten opponents were unable to reach double digits in points, Indiana was able to put up 28 points and 351 yards on the Spartans, while Nebraska also got to 28 points and had 392 yards – and perhaps most importantly for breaking down this game, 5.7 yards per carry.

Using these games as a guide, we can put together a game plan that can show how the Buckeyes can move the ball and score points against the Spartans.

In other words, let's make Mission: Impossible seem rather possible.

What Indiana did:
The Hoosiers were able to strike early against the Spartans, breaking off a 64-yard touchdown run for Tevin Coleman a mere minute into the game.

So what happened here? Operating out of a shotgun, one-back offense with a tight end – that should sound familiar to OSU fans – the Hoosiers took advantage of the Spartans split safeties. Kurtis Drummond and Isaiah Lewis are two key players given their ability to play both the run and the pass, but on this play, Indiana's offensive line did its job – check out the cut on linebacker Max Bullough by the center – and the rest fell into place.

First, "Star" Taiwan Jones got sucked out of the play by the option component, and Drummond was preoccupied on the bottom of the play by the screen action. That left Lewis, who simply got sucked too far upfield and couldn't recover to stop Coleman. This is something the Buckeyes might be able to exploit vs. the Spartans.

Later, Indiana hit a long pass play to slot man Shane Wynn, who simply beat Drummond in one-on-one coverage.

Dontre Wilson, another No. 1, is probably the Buckeyes' closest comparison to Wynn, but he isn't as polished a wideout as Wynn, a junior. But taking advantage of the Spartans' safeties in pass coverage will definitely be on OSU's list going into the game.

Another thing Indiana did well was use its defense to create offense. Two of the Hoosiers' scoring drives were less than 50 yards, having been set up by a fumble and an interception.

What Nebraska did:
Here's another example of a big run against MSU, and quite frankly, it's a pretty simple one.

With no tight end, the Huskers have just five men in to block (something you likely won't see OSU do) but the advantage the team has thanks to the option game results in a big play.

The Spartans really have only five defenders in the box (a rarity for MSU) and one of those isn't blocked because he has the quarterback in the option run game. That leaves a 5-on-4 advantage for the Huskers offensive line, and when Bullough shades to his right, there's nothing but green turf for Imani Cross, who simply outruns Drummond to the end zone.

The Huskers also took advantage of the Spartans' safety play on this run by Ameer Abdullah covering 29 yards.

The Spartans are noted for their run fits and gap soundness this season, but on this play, the safety, Lewis, simply runs himself out of the play. You don't get that too often vs. MSU, but when it happens, you have to take advantage

So what are some of the overarching keys vs. MSU?

1. Win the run game: In these examples, we've seen option runs give the Spartans some fits, though that isn't always the case. MSU shut down teams like Michigan and Illinois that have mobile quarterbacks, so having option runs in the offense isn't necessarily the magic trick to big plays. But there's a reason option plays are part of the OSU offense, and many others throughout the nation.

But when it comes to controlling the line of scrimmage, the Buckeyes have shown they can run the ball on anyone and everyone they have faced. With Braxton Miller and Carlos Hyde in a groove, OSU ran for 393 yards vs. Michigan – a full 225 more than the Wolverines had given up to any other opponent this year. Add in three first-team All-Big Ten players on the left side of the line playing at the height of their powers, and Ohio State certainly won't shy away from the ground game.

MSU will win some battles. But if the Buckeyes stick with it, they will certainly win theirs, too.

2. Don't turn it over: Nebraska's success was dulled by the fact the Huskers had five turnovers, including four lost fumbles. On the year, Michigan State has forced 27 turnovers – five of which it has returned for touchdowns. Simply put, holding on to the ball is a must.

Not only do turnovers hurt the offense, they can put the defense in bad spots, too. There's no reason to give a Michigan State team that needs the help any short fields.

3. Hit a big pass play: Nebraska's Kenny Bell took advantage of the man-to-man coverage MSU plays to make a spectacular touchdown grab earlier this season. Ohio State, of course, hit a big one to win the game last year when Miller hit Devin Smith in stride down the right sideline behind corner Johnny Adams.

So yes, there are big plays to be had, and Smith is one of the premier deep threats in the league. MSU's safeties are such aggressive, confident run defenders that the play-action passing game can also be brought into the equation, and we've seen Ohio State run pass plays that are based off of the team's base run plays before.

It definitely can be done, and if it happens, it might just go about altering the way MSU plays its defense.
