Recruiting News and Notes: 1/16

The recruiting dead period has ended and college coaches have hit the recruiting trail to finish out the 2014 class and create momentum for the 2015 class.

RICHMOND TALKS TO URBAN

Top 2015 offensive line target Drew Richmond continues to receive heavy interest from Ohio State. He talked with Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer at the beginning of the week. Richmond isn't naming favorites yet but Ohio State is in a great spot. Tim Hinton is his area recruiter and it is expected he will drop in on Richmond very soon.

COACHING STOPS

Urban Meyer and Ed Warinner were all over New Jersey today. They saw Cedar Grove 2014 prospect David Njoku. He doesn't hold an offer from Ohio State yet but has received plenty interest. He may visit Columbus on January 31. They also saw 2015 interior offensive lineman Steven Gonzalez and the Buckeyes are in terrific shape. St. Peter's Prep standouts Brandon Wimbush and Minkah Fitzpatrick were also visited by the Ohio State staff. The Buckeyes have offered both and remain near the top of the list for each.

Luke Fickell was in Pennsylvania today. One of his stops was to check in on Ohio State commit Malik Hooker.

Kerry Coombs, Stan Drayton, and new Ohio State assistant Larry Johnson were in Michigan today. A few of the prospects that they dropped in on were Damon Webb, Mike Weber, Joshua Alabi, Malik McDowell, and Brian Cole. The Buckeyes and Michigan State are at the top for Weber but the Spartans will be tough to beat. Alabi and Cole are not likely to wind up at Ohio State as it stands now. The Buckeyes are in the mix for McDowell but the official visit at the end of the month should tell us a lot.

Tim Hinton was in Connecticut today and stopped in to check out 2015 tight end Chris Clark. He holds an early offer from Ohio State and the Buckeyes are in good shape early on.

2015 DEFENSIVE PROSPECTS

Defensive end Jashon Cornell, linebacker Ricky DeBerry, and defensive tackle Tim Settle are three prospects in the junior class where Ohio State could see early impacts from the hiring of Larry Johnson.

Cornell has liked Ohio State for a while but has yet to visit. He is excited about the addition of Larry Johnson and expects to visit the Buckeye campus in March. DeBerry also came away with positive thoughts and is planning on visiting Ohio State in the Spring. Tim Settle grew up a fan of the Buckeyes but has been checking out several other schools as well. The new Ohio State defensive line coach will give him more familiarity and comfort with the school going forward.

LATEST ON THOMAS

Five-star defensive end Solomon Thomas has kept Ohio State in his top group for the duration of his process and even took two unofficial visits to Columbus to check out the Buckeyes. I still think his admission to Stanford ended this one and he will be signing with the Cardinal.

LATEST ON TAYLOR

Columbus (OH) Bishop Ready offensive tackle Brady Taylor recently added an Ohio State offer. He's been committed to Virginia Tech for a while but the nearby Buckeyes had stayed in touch with him throughout his process.

Taylor recently scheduled an official visit to Ohio State that will take place this weekend. His position coach at Virginia Tech has also left now for the same position at LSU. Everything is coming together for Ohio State to complete the flip.

2016 STANDOUT

Savannah (GA) wide receiver Demetris Robertson is a prospect that Ohio State has pinpointed early on. He already holds an offer and will be visiting the Buckeyes in March. Clemson and Georgia should also be heavily involved.
