The game has been an effective recruiting tool in the past, and with several high profile recruits expected this Saturday, could multiple commitments be possible?
Cleveland St. Ignatius defensive end Dre'Mont Jones received his Ohio State offer in February, and he recently visited. He is coming back to Ohio State for the spring game.
"I was at Ohio State about a week ago, and I was there for a practice," Jones said of the Buckeye program. "Everything was really cool and they made me feel like I was already a part of the school, which made me feel welcome. Practice was really intense, and everything was live."
"I spoke with Coach (Urban) Meyer and Coach (Larry) Johnson, and they were both real cool guys," he added. "Coach Meyer was really nice and it was a great experience to meet someone like him. Coach Johnson has a great reputation, and it was exciting to speak with him."
Jones also visited Michigan shortly after and stated the Wolverines were a close second to Ohio State.
MY TAKE: The return visit to Ohio State is cause in itself to place Jones on commitment watch. Even though he says the Wolverines are a close second, there's no doubting the fact that the Ohio State offer was one he really wanted.
Notre Dame is also starting to show interest, and Jones has talked of visiting the Irish in the summer. So why the talk of a weekend commitment?
Do not discount the excitement of a packed stadium on a lovely April afternoon, and the atmosphere generated by both the fans, other recruits and the current Buckeye players and coaches. There is also the Urban Meyer factor, which can never be ignored. Jones is also very tight with incoming freshman linebacker Kyle Berger, and he has talked about the two of them playing together again.
While not calling for a commitment this weekend, I do see Jones signing with Ohio State next February, and a decision to end his recruitment this Saturday would not be a shocker. All in all, there is good reason to have Dre'Mont Jones on commitment watch this Saturday.
