Auburn Visit "Exceeded Expectations" For Kirk

Four-star wide receiver Christian Kirk talks about his first look at Auburn and why the Tigers are likely to get an official visit this fall.

One of the top wide receiver prospects in the country, athletic Christian Kirk from Scottsdale, Ariz. made his first trip to Auburn over the weekend to see the campus, sit down with the coaches, and check out the environment surrounding the program.

A dynamic playmaker with offers from coast-to-coast, the fourth-ranked receiver nationally by said that everything about his first look at the Tigers went great.

"It by far exceeded my expectations," Kirk said. "This place is awesome. I love the family atmosphere. That's one thing that was stressed to me the whole time. I was able to hang out with some of the guys and they are awesome. They brought me in just like family. It was a great trip."

Playing at Saguaro High School, Kirk said it was his second time to meet Auburn Coach Gus Malzahn after the two met briefly when he was still in middle school. At the time the Tigers were recruiting talented back D.J. Foster and although he didn't know at the time they would meet again, Malzahn made an impression on everyone at his high school including him.

"Going into my freshman year our offensive staff came down here and spent time with these guys," Kirk said. "They really got to know Coach Malzahn and they loved it too. They said it was a place you have to see.

"Actually when D.J. Foster was being recruited Coach Malzahn was out there," he added. "I got to shake his hand. I had no idea. I was just in eighth grade and hadn't even been to high school and our coach told him ‘this is a guy that in the next couple of years you're going to be recruiting'. Once it happened it's crazy how things change."

Spending much of his time with the coaches, Kirk said Malzahn and his wife Kristi made the experience an enjoyable one because of the time they spent with him on Friday.

"They were with me the whole day on the tour," Kirk said. "They even had lunch with us inside campus, which was awesome. I spent time with Coach (Rhett) Lashlee also. Coach (Dameyune) Craig was out of town. Coach Lashlee and Coach Malzahn were with me every step of the way expressing how much they want me and how he handles his team."

One of the things that has Kirk high on the Tigers is Malzahn's offensive style and his ability to get several different players involved in the gameplan. Seeing how he's used guys in the past in both the passing and running game, he said that was a big part of his visit and he liked what he saw and heard.

"They pretty much said I would be playing the same role as Ricardo (Louis)," he said. "Just being moved all around. Ricardo did a lot of stuff for them this year. We were able to get on the board and watch film. They think I'm dynamic just like him, so that's their plan for me."

Still wide open on his college choices at the moment, Kirk said he has a good idea of at least two of the schools that will be on his list at the end and that he'll plan to visit sometime this fall. Focusing on winning a state championship as a senior. he said that he's still not sure he will take things until signing day but wants to get as much information as possible before pulling the trigger."

"Obviously Texas A&M is a school that will probably be in there until the end," Kirk said. "I definitely could see Auburn in there. I'll be back for an official. That's just how much of an impression this place made on me."
