Justin Hilliard? In. Jashon Cornell? In. The month of July has fired off to a fantastic start on the recruiting trail for the Buckeyes after securing commitments from the midwest four-star prospects. A benefit of adding the two is their popularity amongst the other national prospects available. I won't expect the impact to be drastic in that regard, but Hilliard and Cornell have potential to make a bit of a difference with other recruits.
The verbal pledges from Cornell and Hilliard could be just the beginning of a possibly huge month.
A few other top prospects high on the Ohio State wish list should come off the board this month as well. We take a look at some of the other possibilities for the Buckeyes this month.
Jerome Baker. Four-star Cleveland (OH) Benedictine linebacker. He announces on July 11 and the timing of it is big for Ohio State. I think Florida was their competition here and the Gators could have made it interesting with an official visit, in my opinion. With an early decision and no return visit to Gainesville, the Buckeyes likely win out here.
L.J. Scott. Four-star Hubbard (OH) running back. Ohio State and Chris Ash have swung this one around in a significant way. It's probably one of the better recruiting jobs of the year. Scott intends to visit both the Buckeyes and Michigan State before making a decision, and that should tell the tale where this one heads. This one could get done in July pending how soon he hits the road for his visits.
James Daniels. Three-star Warren (OH) Harding offensive lineman. He recently told Scout that he'd like to have his decision completed before August, but wants to squeeze in a visit to Alabama. I'd have this as a pretty even battle right now between Ohio State and Iowa.
Damien Harris. Four-star Berea (KY) Madison Southern running back. The nation's top running back is now contemplating making his decision within the next couple weeks. If so, the Buckeyes should be the overwhelming favorite for his services. He'll go where he feels the most comfortable and do what's best for him, but the additions of Cornell and Hilliard could certainly aid in that process.
Van Jefferson. Four-star Brentwood (TN) Ravenwood wide receiver. I'm more so speculating and making a bit of an educated guess on Jefferson coming off the board in July. I think he and his inner circle would like to have his recruitment finished before his senior season begins. The Buckeyes are in the mix, but I think they have a bit more work to do, and another visit will be vital.
Matthew Burrell. Four-star Woodbridge (VA) C.D. Hylton offensive lineman. People close to this recruitment began to hint to me at the beginning of March that Ohio State would be a serious player in his recruitment. I brought that to the site but was still a bit hesitant to take much of a stand, but I no longer am. Since that point Burrell has been on the Buckeye campus multiple times. It's probably a bit of a stretch to think he announces in July but I'm not ruling it out. Larry Johnson is playing a key role here.
