Damon Arnette picked up a lot of offers this offseason, but one he was still hoping for was Ohio State. He had been talking it over with his Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas athletic director, George Smith, and Smith made a call to Ohio State. Smith let Arnette know he had an offer and he was high on the Buckeyes' list.
"I talk to (safeties) coach (Chris) Ash a lot, he's just been saying that he's excited to get me up there at the end of July."
Julye 25th is the day Arnette will visit Ohio State for the first time. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound corner hopes to have his decision soon after that. South Carolina is heavily in the picture as well, and Arnette is basically just waiting to see how the OSU visit goes before making his choice.
"I hear that Ohio State is huge. I want to just look around the city to see if I could see myself there for four years. Also, I'm just excited to go against the competition that's going to be there, because I'm sure a bunch of big-time recruits are going to be there, so for me to go against them in front of the coaches is going to be big," he said.
"(This visit is) pretty big, because right now, Ohio State is high on my list, as well as South Carolina. So it just has to be better, I have to feel like there's a better opportunity there, I just have to like it more."
Arnette has already visited South Carolina a few times, so he has a pretty good grasp on what the Gamecocks have to offer. The Ohio State visit is going to be critical in his decision.
"Both schools are big time schools, so they're both going to have the best of the best – big stadiums, nice locker rooms, a great coaching staff – so I guess I'm just going to be looking for the little things," he said.
"It has to feel right. Also, I just want to go where I have a better opportunity. I'm going to look at the depth chart. I know Ohio State is really cold, I have to decide if I can deal with the cold. It's mainly about the opportunity with the depth chart and everything like that."
Even if he loves the OSU visit, Arnette doesn't plan on committing while he's there. He wants to come home, think it over, and make a final choice in the following few days.
