Meyer Monday: Aug. 25

It's finally game week at Ohio State, which means it's time for Urban Meyer's weekly press conference. BSB wraps up what the head coach had to say as the team gets ready to take on Navy.

Bullet points from head coach Urban Meyer's weekly press conference Monday afternoon at Ohio State heading into this week's contest vs. Navy.

Braxton Miller met with Dr. James Andrews this morning and surgery is set for tomorrow on his torn labrum.

J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones have responded "quite well," per Meyer. The biggest positive, now, to Meyer is that the Buckeyes have six game-ready WRs.

"I'm a big fan of his," Meyer says of Navy QB Keenan Reynolds. Mentions some of the Navy coaches think he's the best QB they've ever had, "Which takes your breath away a little bit."

On position battles, left guard is not named yet. "One guy hasn't separted himself." Joel Hale, Billy Price and Antonio Underwood are still in the battle. Starting center hasn't been named between Jacoby Boren and Chad Lindsay.

Eli Apple and Gareon Conley will both play opposite Doran Grant at cornerback.

In the mix at WR are Devin Smith, Evan Spencer, Dontre Wilson, Jalin Marshall, Mike Thomas and Corey Smith. "They all deserve playing time." He's not sure who will start first.

Meyer admits a little more "anxiety" this year facing a difficult to prepare for Navy team. But he is still excited since he has good players and "I can tell you this, I think we have a good team." Says he's faked it before.

In his heart, Meyer thought Braxton would be ready to go. So this situation was thrust upon the team but Barrett and Jones are still close and both could play vs. Navy, though Barrett is getting most of the No. 1 reps.

Curtis Grant is a starting linebacker in the middle, but you can expect some rotation in this first game.

Captains at Ohio State, as voted upon by the team: Braxton Miller, Jeff Heuerman, Michael Bennett, Doran Grant and Curtis Grant.

Jeff Heuerman is not 100 percent yet but it is anticipated he will play, though he probably won't get every rep. In the last month, Nick Vannett is one of the most improved players. "He's had a good a camp at tight end as I've seen."

Meyer says Barrett's demeanor is the same every day. "He's handled it very well."

On Barrett being his first QB signee: Loved his competitive spirit at the Elite 11. You don't get to evaluate QBs like you used to but "J.T. was one of our guys and we did a bunch of homework on him and decided he was the one that we wanted. ... He's not a loud guy but he's a confident guy."

Ezekiel Elliott is full-go and both Rod Smith and Brionte Dunn had great camps. The four guys there are those three and Curtis Samuel. Warren Ball had a concussion injury on top of his foot injury so he has fallen back a bit.

How ready is this team? "They're pretty ready. I like where we're at. I like how they've responded to Braxton's injury."

Miller won't be at the Navy game as he's coming off the surgery but could travel later in the season.
