Buckeyes In The NFL: Week 5

Taking a look at the best performances by former Ohio State players in Week 5 of the 2014 NFL season.

The amount of former Ohio State players on NFL practice squads shrunk by one, but in this case it was good news.

John Simon was signed off Baltimore’s practice squad by the Houston Texans, reuniting him with former position coach Mike Vrabel, who now coaches linebackers for the AFC South squad.

He is the second former OSU player in as many weeks to be signed to an active roster. The Texans also signed defensive tackle Ryan Pickett last week.

WR Philly Brown (Carolina Panthers)
Another punt fielded by Brown ended up on the ground, but this time it wasn’t because of a drop. The rookie wide receiver never touched the ball because he was drilled by Chicago cornerback Teddy Williams.

In one of the most bizarre plays of the year to date, Brown picked himself up, realized a whistle hadn’t been blown, grabbed the ball and raced 79 yards for a touchdown.

“I looked down and saw the ball in front of me,” Brown told the Charlotte Observer. “My instinct tells me to pick it up and run it with no whistle.

“I wasn’t surprised because I knew it was going on, I just didn’t know where the ball was. God put the ball right at my feet.”

Brown also rushed twice for 22 yards and caught one pass for 4 yards in a 31-24 win against Chicago.
