One of the position groups that could directly be impacted by next week'S Friday Night Lights camp might be the defensive backfield, and two of the main targets for defensive coordinator Chris Ash are expected to be in attendance.
There aren't too many openings left in the Ohio State 2016 recruiting class, but Ash is looking to add at least two more defensive back commits. Who are the candidates that will be in Columbus next week?
Andrew Pryts. Safety. Hermitage (PA) Hickory. I would definitely have Pryts on commitment alert next week, and I think Ohio State is the favorite to land the hard-hitting safety. Pryts is supposedly coming to hang out, and not work out. That outlook could be interpreted that the four-star recruit knows he is coming to Columbus for business, and there is no need to prove anything on the field. Pryts leaving Ohio State as a member of the 2016 recruiting class would not shock me.
Damar Hamlin. Cornerback. Pittsburgh Central Catholic. On the other hand, Hamlin is coming to compete and work out, and while I like Ohio State's chances with the four-star recruit, I do not expect a commitment. It's tough as can be to pluck the Pittsburgh kids away from home, but Hamlin has been to campus several times with his parents and I think the Buckeyes are in great position to land him. This one might take a little while longer though.
A.J. Rose. Safety. Garfield Heights (OH). One of the more unknown players in Ohio, and a true sleeper recruit. Rose received his first offer from Kentucky as a runningback, and promptly accepted it. That effectively ended his recruitment, but Ohio State has been to his school and Ash has been tracking him since the spring evaluation phase. He will work out as a safety at Friday Night Lights. He would have to blow them away to be offered, but at least a complete evaluation will be made and Rose can either be moved to the PLAN-B list, dropped completely or offered on the spot.
George Hill. Athlete. Hubbard (OH). We had the news earlier that Hill would be attending, but at the time it was not known if he was coming to work out or hang out. It was learned today that Hill is going to work out for the coaching staff. He will undoubtedly be there to catch the football as a wide receiver, but it will be interesting to see if Ash grabs Hill and has him take reps on defense. This happened last year at FNL with Eric Glover-Williams, and he is now playing cornerback for the Buckeyes. The fact that Hill is coming at all is encouraging to the Ohio State staff. Add in the fact that is willing to work out, and things are dramatically better between the two parties.
2017 DEFENSIVE BACK RECRUITING: Ohio State already has two commitments for this class in four-star cornerbacks Marcus Williamson and Shaun Wade. Five-star Darnay Holmes from California is scheduled to attend, as well as Pennsylvania four-stars Paris Ford and Lamont Wade, and all three hold Buckeye offers. An interesting in-state prospect is Olentangy Liberty's Brendon White, the son of former Buckeye William White, and it will be good to see him in action inside the Horseshoe to see if he earns an offer. This is a lot of young talent that will be on the field next Friday.
