Meyer's Ohio State Personnel Updates

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer met with the media Saturday afternoon after a Buckeye scrimmage and updated team personnel now that the team is done with fall camp.

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer met with the media Saturday afternoon after a Buckeye scrimmage and gave the following updates on the team.

  • Meyer said not having two healthy wrists last season helped running back Ezekiel Elliott with pad level. He added Elliott has not been subject to “to the ground” tackling in camp but is good to go for the opening Sept. 7 vs. Virgnia Tech.
  • Meyer said that J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones are “neck and neck,” in the quarterback battle.
  • Meyer said Braxton Miller has been dealing with a tight hamstring but should be ready to go by Monday. Meyer said his plan is to try to have Braxton Miller prepared to start week one against Virginia Tech. Meyer wouldn't say Miller is a starter but that "I want him to be."
  • Urban said Mike Weber is walking without crutches after his meniscus tear suffered in camp. Said he won’t be ready for week one but there is a good chance Weber won’t be redshirted due to a solid camp.
  • “I think our defense in the last three games was as good as I have ever witnessed.” Urban said of last season. The interior defensive line is a point of weakness.
  • Sam Hubbard has the edge over Jalyn Holmes at the defensive end position opposite Tyquan Lewis for week one given Joey Bosa's suspension.
  • Meyer said Tommy Schutt has had a “really good camp" and is set to start at defensive tackle.
  • Meyer described new quarterback coach Tim Beck and running back coach Tony Alford as “great additions.”
  • Meyer said they have been working on Virginia Tech already in fall camp, and will be focusing on the Hokies for more than half of each practice leading up to the game.
  • Duke transfer Jack Willoughby hit two back-to-back 60-yard field goals in practice yesterday, one reason he had his black stripe removed Friday. He is battling Sean Nuernberger for the starting kicking job.
  • Mike Thomas, Noah Brown, Parris Campbell, Johnnie Dixon, Curtis Samuel are among the top wide receivers in rotation for week one with Jalin Marshall, Dontre Wilson and Corey Smith suspended according to Meyer. Torrance Gibson is coming along nicely as well as Terry McLaurin.
