20 Questions: Best Matchup To Watch

Our preseason series of questions meant to preview the upcoming campaign is coming to a close, and today we tackle which matchup should be most intriguing to watch this season between the Buckeyes and another team.

Ever play 20 Questions? Pretty fun, right?

That's what we think, so with that in mind, we're asking 20 Questions when it comes to the Ohio State football team. Every day from now until the opening game week, we'll have our BSB writers answer one question about the Ohio State football team. Some will be serious, some will be funny, and none will be "Animal, vegetable or mineral?" But all should help you think about the upcoming season, hopefully in a different way than before.

Question 18: Which position group matchup are you most looking forward to this season (ex: Ohio State O-Line vs. MSU D-line)?

Ryan Ginn: There are a lot of interesting options out there (both OL-DL matchups in the Michigan State game and the Virginia Tech DL vs. the Ohio State OL), but at the moment I’m most intrigued to see how the Ohio State wide receivers fare against the Virginia Tech defensive backs. Hokies cornerback Kendall Fuller is an All-America talent, and his battle against Mike Thomas will be an important one. With Noah Brown, Dontre Wilson, Jalin Marshall and Corey Smith no longer available, it will be up to Thomas or some of the less experienced receivers to get the job done and break the Bear look.

Blake Williams: When I came up with this question I thought for sure it would involve Michigan State, but given the summer’s suspensions and recent injury to Noah Brown, I am going to go with Ohio State’s wide receivers against Virginia Tech’s defensive backs.

The Hokies are expected to have one of the best secondaries in the country and the Buckeyes are going to be awfully thin at receiver for game one. Ohio State does have Michael Thomas, but the Hokies have projected All-American corner Kendall Fuller to match up with him. Not only am I interested in how Thomas responds against a future NFL corner, I am anxious to see who among Johnnie Dixon, Parris Campbell and Terry McLaurin steps up to the challenge. Will the coaches use Curtis Samuel on the outside to get their best 11 on the field with Braxton Miller at the H? How will Bud Foster’s defense counter? There are so many intriguing things about this matchup that it’s a clear No. 1 for me.

Jeff Svoboda: I'm gonna make it 3 for 3 picking the Virginia Tech game but with a twist -- how does Ohio State's offensive line match up against a Hokies defensive front that is ranked fourth in the nation by Phil Steele. The Hokies feature Dadi Nicolas, a dangerous pass-rushing end, as well as space-eating tackle Luther Maddy in the middle. The Hokies had 48 sacks last year but perhaps most impressively held the Buckeyes to a season-low rushing total that barely topped the century mark. I think it will be very intriguing to watch how the passing game fares agaisnt Tech, but frankly, if the Slobs play at the level they did at the end of last season, the receivers question will in many ways be moot and Ohio State will win the game on the ground.
