Ohio State Football: Navy veteran Patrick Wise talks military service, OSU career

Ohio State walk-on running back Patrick Wise served in the Navy for four years. On Veterans Day, he spoke about his military career and his time at Ohio State.

On Veterans Day, Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer began his post-practice press conference a little differently.

“There’s an interesting board out there of all the former players and coaches who have served in the military, and we have one current young man on our team that a veteran, Patrick Wise,” Meyer said. “He’s from Warren, Ohio. He served four years in the Navy and walked on this spring as a junior majoring in international studies. We were proud to present him with the Block O that goes up on that wall.

“I introduced him to the team today, and he said he’s living his dream. It’s kind of neat to be able to do that.”

Wise, a walk-on running back who was stationed at the Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay in southeast Georgia, said today held a lot of meaning for him.

“It’s a very special day to me,” he said. “Especially to everyone that has laid the foundation before me and to everyone that is currently serving, I still salute them as well.”

Wise grew up an Ohio State fan and tried out for a walk-on spot back in January. A few months later, he got the call he’d been waiting for.

“It’s a dream come true to even walk these halls and be in this facility with these guys,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to be a part of the Buckeyes. I always wanted to be on this team. It’s a big dream come true for me.”
