Chat Transcript - July 24

Verbatim transcript from today's chat.

Kirk (Jul 24, 2003 1:59:23 PM)
We can kick it off now and people will join us along the way. If you have questions fire away

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 1:59:54 PM)
Anything new on the NYT front?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:00:03 PM)
Not to my knowledge

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:00:15 PM)
No news, good news??

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:00:19 PM)
I honestly think that unless something is found the Times story could really backfire

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:00:23 PM)
Yes. That is the truth

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:00:36 PM)
So long as all is quiet, then OSU has a good chance to come out unscathed

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:00:49 PM)
I really think it has damaged the NYT reputation more than tOSU's

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:00:58 PM)
Right now, I think they are about equal

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:01:18 PM)
Are you happy to have Underwood?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:01:20 PM)
However, the fact that this hit national press and talk radio will make it a story that people will check back on and wonder about the results

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:01:43 PM)
when they check back, if nothing is found and several high profile folks talk about OSU's reputation - it could backfire

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:01:51 PM)
I like OSU getting Underwood

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:01:53 PM)
Aside from Ginn, any more db's?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:01:56 PM)
They just lost Boone

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:02:19 PM)
Not to my knowledge. I think there might be more offers out there, but it may be a situation where they are telling kids now that they are full up

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:02:42 PM)
Frankly, I would love to see the staff bulk up some of these kids to move them down

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:02:42 PM)
Hopefully we will begin to hear some OL news . . . very soon!

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:02:53 PM)
There are several out there looking at OSU

Kirk (Jul 24, 2003 2:02:59 PM)
O-Zone suggests that Boone's situation is unclear but we were told specifically yesterday that he had already transferred

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:03:01 PM)
I am supposed to call the Nicolas family in the next day or so

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:03:12 PM)
We will see what they have to say

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:03:14 PM)
Lots of good ones, but no one seems ready to pull the trigger

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:03:25 PM)
It is like that with the out of State kids.

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:03:48 PM)
We still don't know where Boone ended up?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:04:05 PM)
Plus, Ohio State is not going after any poor players. They are after the blue-chippers. Even if one of them pulls the trigger, then I don't see it being over until signing day ala McGlover and R. Washington

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:04:13 PM)
I have not seen any reports.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:04:23 PM)
I am sure someone knows but they are not yet talking

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:04:41 PM)
Anyone else joining us yet?

Kirk (Jul 24, 2003 2:04:46 PM)
Here's what O-Zone said: As we reported yesterday, the name of LeAndre Boone is missing from the fall roster. Tressel talked about Boone's status. "LeAndre Boone right now is trying to figure some things out. We should know by the time the preseason starts what he needs to do," Tressel said.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:05:08 PM)
I can tell you what he needs to do

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:05:19 PM)
what's that??

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:05:20 PM)
He needs to add 25 lbs over the next year and play LB

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:05:35 PM)
Matthews has already moved down and was said to be looking very nice this spring

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:06:05 PM)
You mentioned moving down earlier, who are the most likely candidates for that? Stating with db's to LB, then LB's to DL

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:06:09 PM)
With all the DB talent OSU is piling up, his the best chance for Boone is to go to LB and be a coverage/blitzer with speed

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:06:16 PM)
OL seems to be the one position we are not loaded at.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:06:24 PM)
Well, this is just my opinion here.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:06:32 PM)
DB to LB

Kirk (Jul 24, 2003 2:06:51 PM)
I don't know; I guess that quote wasn't clear... maybe he's referring to a transfer, or maybe he's referring to other stuff. All I know is we were told yesterday he was gone

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:06:55 PM)
Mitchell, Boone (if he stays,) Lukens, Jacobs

attorney (Jul 24, 2003 2:07:06 PM)
Any updates on Delbert Ferguson? Is his stock on the decline?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:07:14 PM)
It is big time in decline

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:07:28 PM)
Duane still likes him

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:07:32 PM)
I will have an update on that in the next few days. I talked to him Tuesday

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:07:45 PM)
He seems to have real talent

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:07:48 PM)
What is he thinking?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:07:56 PM)
THe issue is what do the coaches want?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:08:05 PM)
As far as moving down from LB to DE

attorney (Jul 24, 2003 2:08:20 PM)
How does Quinn Pitcock figure into the mix this year?

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:08:25 PM)
Where is Stan White going to end up? FB maybe?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:08:36 PM)
D'Andrea, Carpenter, and SMith are candidates

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:08:58 PM)
Not to steal any thunder from your update, but what do the coaches want from DF?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:08:58 PM)
I really don't know. I am not sure anyone knows. The thing with him is that he must find a position where he can be better than the current players

Kirk (Jul 24, 2003 2:09:05 PM)
Dave Biddle has a good update on the club message board from Luke Fickell... he talked about Pitcock being the #4 DT

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:09:20 PM)
On Ferguson - I asked about what is going on but he was evasive

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:09:41 PM)
Stan seems to have one of those body types that could play at multiple positions

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:09:41 PM)
Smith and Lukens looked good to me in the Big 33, looked like they both played with a lot of emotion

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:09:45 PM)
He just needs to find a home

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:10:18 PM)
The thing about a great defense is that it must have speed. If it does, then the offense is severely handicapped in trying to overcome it.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:10:30 PM)
OSU had incredible speed and experience on D last year

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:10:36 PM)
Peterson was a DE in a DT body

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:10:40 PM)
After watching the BIg 33 I don't think Patterson redshirts. He was dominating.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:10:43 PM)
Gamble was a WR playing DB

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:10:59 PM)
Grant was a DB in a LB body

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:11:10 PM)
Scott and SMith have LB speed on DE frames.

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:11:12 PM)
Sorry I'm late. Did I miss any big news?

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:11:25 PM)
Just the latest commit 68

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:11:26 PM)
After a while, you cannot compensate for everything offensively. Someone is going to roam freely

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:11:34 PM)

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:11:37 PM)
Agree that Patterson had a good game

ybuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:11:39 PM)
It appears to me that OSU and UM have a similar way of evaluating talent and going after the same kids when they become hot. Do you think they "hawk" each others talent? Like Woody used to do?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:11:49 PM)
There will be time to play on the Dline with the losses of Peterson and Thompson.

buckeyeglory (Jul 24, 2003 2:11:53 PM)
Charles do you thinkl Irizzary gets some playing time this year

topsyturv (Jul 24, 2003 2:12:22 PM)
I just arrived, will a chat transcript be posted after the chat is over?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:12:24 PM)
ybuck - I would say that many times they are after the same kids because they both like blue-chippers

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:12:41 PM)
They also probably both have contacts all over the state that they mine that are telling them the same thing, "This kid can play."

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:13:07 PM)
Glory - That will be up to Louis. I would say that the big question for him is not the athleticism or receiving but the blocking

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:13:16 PM)
Anything new on the supposed Gamble/Krenzel investigation?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:13:22 PM)
Nothing I have heard about

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:13:48 PM)
I believe the Dispatch might have had something today or yesterday, but I have not had the time to read it.

ybuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:13:52 PM)
Charles, I was surprised that Purdue wasn't voted higher that Wisconsin in the recent poll. Your comments, please.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:14:21 PM)
I like them both Ybuck

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:14:30 PM)
I do not see OSU getting through this season without a loss

buckeyeglory (Jul 24, 2003 2:14:50 PM)
thats what people said last year

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:14:51 PM)
Wisconsin is going to have a very good offense (at least on paper). I do not think people are giving them their just due

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:15:11 PM)
Lol. I said it last year, but last year OSU faced the toughest teams at home.

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:15:24 PM)
What big committment did I miss? Is it someone other than Underwood?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:15:27 PM)
This year they go to Wisconsin (again) and to PSU and to UM

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:15:33 PM)
It was a joke Mike

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:15:35 PM)
no. Underwood is a nice get

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:15:38 PM)

Kirk (Jul 24, 2003 2:15:44 PM)
topsyturvy, we'll have a transcript posted hopefully later today

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:15:46 PM)
I was kidding 68

DenBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:15:49 PM)
Does not seem fair that scUM misses both PSU and Wisky this year. I know this is a rotation but certain teams should never miss each other.

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:15:55 PM)
Very good get. I would still like another top notch corner in this class

topsyturv (Jul 24, 2003 2:15:56 PM)
Ok, thanks Kirk.

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:16:04 PM)
68 - Ginn?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:16:09 PM)
On Purdue - they have a solid defense and OSU faces them right before Michigan. That will be a tough game.

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:16:19 PM)
scUM definitely has a favorable schedule this year

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:16:22 PM)
Ginn, would be great but sounds like he will be a WR

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:16:28 PM)
The whole rotating schedule is a tough thing.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:16:40 PM)
Sometimes it helps you -- OSU did not face Iowa last year

topsyturv (Jul 24, 2003 2:16:48 PM)
I think if Ginn can get bigger he could play on the defensive side of the ball.

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:16:48 PM)
Why do we really need another CB this year(I'm not referring to Ginn)

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:16:51 PM)
Sometimes it hurts you - OSU did not face NW in 1996

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:17:25 PM)
Nutty - I have not hotline to the coaches, but I would say it is smart for a couple of reasons

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:17:36 PM)
First, these are blue-chippers and guys the staff like.

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:17:37 PM)
It can never hurt to have enough quality CB's. Too mnay teams are running 3-4 WR packages, plus you always have to plan for injuries. Plus, Gamble may be gone after this year

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:17:40 PM)
Ginn and Underwood are about the same size, aren't they?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:17:46 PM)
Second, some of them can move down to LB with some more weight

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:18:01 PM)
Third, we are looking at some who might be able to redshirt

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:18:27 PM)
I would like to see more attention given to the OL, but that's just me. We are loaded in the secondary.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:18:28 PM)
Fourth -- if the talent is there and the young man wants to be a Buckeye, take him. DBs are incredibly important in today's defense

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:18:29 PM)
Ginn is only about 170 lbs from what I've read. Maybe an inch shorter too. Lane is only 5'10" 175, which concerns me a little as a small corner

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:18:46 PM)
I think they are giving attention to the OL Nutty

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:19:14 PM)
Personally, I would take 7-8 OL, but that is me. We will be very thin at OL in the Spring. I hope some of the kids come in early.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:19:17 PM)
What happened last year was that they had all of their starters back. Trying to sell an out of state recruit to come to OSU and sit when his home state school says he can play right away is tough

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:19:20 PM)
We are in and have a good possibility with a number of HUGE OL recruits

topsyturv (Jul 24, 2003 2:19:29 PM)
Rehring is graduating early.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:19:49 PM)
If OSU lands who they are after on the OL, I can guarantee OSU fans will be overjoyed.

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:19:55 PM)
Sounds like we may have 3-5 early graduates in this years class.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:20:08 PM)
The other issue last year was that the in-state guys were below what they normally are in Ohio.

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:20:24 PM)
That darn Clarett, see what he started! :-)

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:20:32 PM)
I think you will see more and more of this not only from football players but the average HS student as well.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:20:45 PM)
Tennessee has had several players do this as well.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:20:57 PM)
I believe one of their top QBs did it a few years back

topsyturv (Jul 24, 2003 2:21:13 PM)
Josh David Booty of USC did it this year.

Kirk (Jul 24, 2003 2:21:14 PM)
Speaking of graduating early, we heard Pittman is going to try to do that too.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:21:16 PM)
Also, USC has possibly the top recruit in this class who is skipping his whole senior year

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:21:19 PM)

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:21:30 PM)
We typed it about the same time tops

topsyturv (Jul 24, 2003 2:21:34 PM)

topsyturv (Jul 24, 2003 2:22:33 PM)
Are the coaches encouraging the recruits to graduate early, or is it something they want to do totally on their own?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:22:43 PM)
One other comment on the defense and speed is that I would like to see some of the current Defensive ends consider bulking up and going inside. Penton, Richardson, Fraser, Kudla -- those guys could be very good on the outside but could be monster mismatches inside with 20-30 more pounds

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:22:44 PM)
I would like to see the entire class each year cone in early. That extra Spring can really speed up one's development. Of course this is me being selfish, but hey

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:22:53 PM)
I would say this is an individual thing

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:23:14 PM)
In the future it might be that coaches encourage it because they can see the benefits.

dalasta (Jul 24, 2003 2:23:30 PM)
yeah look what it did for clarett

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:23:40 PM)
At least one of those four can bulk up and do a Peterson/Scott. FSU made a living on 275 lbs DT's that were cat quick like ends

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:23:43 PM)
The thing is that even though these are just 18 year old kids (and sometimes younger like in the case of Lydell Ross), they are highly motivated.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:24:03 PM)
If they think it can get them closer to their dream, then many are disciplined enough to try it.

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:24:12 PM)
What is the latest on Cotton? When will we know his status?

topsyturv (Jul 24, 2003 2:24:33 PM)
I think if some of the OL from this 04 class want to come in and graduate early, they have a very good chance of becoming starters their freshman year.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:24:45 PM)
Take a look at the Illinios, Michigan, and Miami games to see what a big DE at DT can do. With Anderson and Peterson in there, OSU just tortured offensive lines and destroyed game plans.

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:25:00 PM)
Who do you think will make the quickest impact of the freshman? I see Patterson and Whitner making a splash this year

dalasta (Jul 24, 2003 2:25:08 PM)

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:25:32 PM)
Cook - gone for good?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:25:44 PM)
Topsy, you can bet the staff is telling the young men that because it is true. There is a lot of playing time that will be available in 2004. It is like the situation at UGa last year. They lost 8 of 10 in the two deep. Not surprisingly they brought in some fine Olinemen

dalasta (Jul 24, 2003 2:25:58 PM)
Does anyone know where LeAndre Boone is going?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:26:26 PM)
Mike, I am not sure. Again - until fall practice starts it is all speculation. There is Whitner. There is also Patterson. I also like Louis I.

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:26:29 PM)
Is Michael Roberts going to be the next Boone and transfer when he sees he will never see the field?

youngstown (Jul 24, 2003 2:26:35 PM)

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:26:39 PM)
No news on Boone

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:26:50 PM)
I think Cook is gone

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:26:54 PM)
As for Roberts?

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:27:01 PM)
I'd like to know how many scholarships are tied up at DB.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:27:15 PM)
That will depend on him. If he works like a dog, then he might end up seeing a whole lot of the field before his career at OSU is over.

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:27:19 PM)

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:27:20 PM)
W/ our future wideouts and a TE combo of Frost and LI we could really spread the field and open big holes for the running game. I see the O getting back to the level it was in '98.

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:27:46 PM)
That would be a big step 68

dalasta (Jul 24, 2003 2:27:49 PM)
Yeah, before Bellisari.

Kirk (Jul 24, 2003 2:28:00 PM)
Regarding Boone, our info is still that Boone is gone. However, we've heard Roberts has no plans to leave

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:28:03 PM)
There are a few Nutty, but remember that when you face NW or Purdue or even UM (or OSU) -- there will be times that you need 2 safeties and as many as 4 cornerbacks on the field

topsyturv (Jul 24, 2003 2:28:16 PM)
Do you see Ashton Youbouty getting any playing time next year? His early enrollment could only help.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:28:30 PM)
I think the offense will be better than last year but not quite like 1998.

topsyturv (Jul 24, 2003 2:28:31 PM)
Maybe in Nickel or Dime situations?

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:28:36 PM)

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:28:46 PM)
In 2 years it probably will

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:28:49 PM)
right but you only have 85 scholarships and you shouldn't have 15 DB's on scholarship. I will quit griping now.

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:29:09 PM)
The coaches know a whole lot more than I do....

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:29:10 PM)
Youboty looked very nice in the Spring scrimmage. Fall camp will sort all of that out as well as how he chooses to react to competition.

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:29:17 PM)
You need at least 3 deep at each DB position, so that is 12 guys right there

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:29:23 PM)

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:29:29 PM)
Nutty I understand.

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:29:53 PM)

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:30:11 PM)
The thing is that look at these young men as possibilities. Some are definite CBs or safeties. However, others are going to continue to grow, not lose speed, and be able to look at LB in a few years maybe.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:30:22 PM)
You also have injuries and transfers.

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:30:27 PM)
I hope that Cotton makes it. He can be the big guy that is very quick for his size in the middle.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:30:42 PM)
Then you have graduation, etc.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:31:07 PM)
OSU has lost 4 DBs since last year - McNutt, Doss, Nickey, and Boone.

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:31:32 PM)
Mitchell, Salley, Guilford, Everett, Lukens, Welch, Whitner, Youboty, Underwood x 2, Lane, Gonzo, Hiley, Roberts, Britton, Fox, Jacobs, Gamble...that's 18.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:31:34 PM)
Britton and Allen are seniors and Gamble will possibly be gone

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:32:05 PM)
Remember, some of those are going to go to offense and Lukens at the very least looks like a future LB

topsyturv (Jul 24, 2003 2:32:09 PM)
Aren't Hiley and Gonzo looking to play WR?

dalasta (Jul 24, 2003 2:32:14 PM)
Speaking of, is Gamble Heisman, Top 5 pick in Draft Material?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:32:14 PM)
Lane is more of a specialist in my mind

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:32:15 PM)
Charles, have you talked to Gallimore or Byers?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:32:36 PM)
Talked to both Nutty

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:32:50 PM)
Yes Topsy - they are both being looked at as possible WRs

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:33:11 PM)
Dalasta - I think Gamble is easy top 5 pick possibility if he gets better technique on defense and offense

ybuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:33:15 PM)
Charles, please evaluate the FB position, last yr and this yr.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:33:22 PM)
Hmmm That is tough Ybuck

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:33:33 PM)
I was disappointed in the fullback position production last season

dalasta (Jul 24, 2003 2:33:40 PM)
Me too.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:33:45 PM)
Watch the Purdue game or Illinois game and you can see some missed blocks

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:34:04 PM)
I really had high hopes for Schnittker

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:34:07 PM)
I like Tony Johnson for Lakota East...has a Jamar Martin type frame.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:34:11 PM)
As a direct result, the dfense ended up in the OSU backfield and stopped critical 3rd down plays for losses

topsyturv (Jul 24, 2003 2:34:13 PM)
Do you think Tony Johnson warrants an offer at tFB. He style is awfully similar to Jamar Martin's.

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:34:14 PM)
Do you think that a Gary Williams could be a possible FB. Put some pounds on him, but still have good speed.

topsyturv (Jul 24, 2003 2:34:22 PM)
BuckNutty beat me to it.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:34:27 PM)
OSU needs a ram for FB

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:34:47 PM)
If the current guys do not get it done, then they will be replaced. The coaches will not put up with that.

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:34:51 PM)
Any new news on Cotton and when we will know his status?

sterlingbuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:34:58 PM)
did we go after that peyton kid at all for fb

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:35:14 PM)
I am honestly not sure about those players, but I do know that the staff is not satisfied with current production

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:35:19 PM)
No news on Cotton

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:35:52 PM)
The only stuff that is out on him today is that he is working toward getting everything resolved but nothing is certain either way.

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:36:03 PM)
Has anybody heard when the public sale of tix for the Wash game will be?

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:36:06 PM)
Will Kudla see much playing time? Will he be in the 2 deep?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:36:07 PM)
I am not sure about that sterling

sterlingbuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:36:23 PM)
too bad bolen refused to play at fullback - it hasn't turned out so bad for alstott

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:36:38 PM)
I think Kudla is just about recovered (at least they are reporting he is better). If so, he could see some time this year

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:36:41 PM)
Bolen will see his wrong in a few years

topsyturv (Jul 24, 2003 2:36:43 PM)
What is the problem with Cotton? Grades, or does it have anything to do with his friendship with Lebron?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:36:58 PM)
It is grades I believe. LeBron is not the issue

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:37:24 PM)
the quiet before the storm...

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:37:33 PM)

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:37:35 PM)
WEre you surprised Tressel had not read the NYT article?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:37:40 PM)
Yes and no

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:37:46 PM)
I'd really like to see Kudla come on at DE. We will need him after Scott and Smith graduate.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:37:53 PM)
On the one hand yes because it concerns OSU and implies OSU is cheating

Kirk (Jul 24, 2003 2:37:54 PM)
dalasta, I'm not... sorry

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:37:57 PM)
Good answer, kind of how I feel

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:38:21 PM)
On the other --- no because Tressel and top level coaches routinely work 80-90 hour weeks year round AND have a family.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:38:27 PM)
I am with you Nutty.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:38:49 PM)
OSU really needs some speed at the defensive end slot. That is what made all the difference in the world last year.

sterlingbuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:38:58 PM)
there is a kid named steve fender from toledo walking on who is going to give fullback a try - he needs to strengthen upper body a bit but could be tough there - i have seen him play on D and he was a beast

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:39:31 PM)
There is another walk on who should be a candidate for FB, can't recall his name.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:39:31 PM)
I have heard his name. Is this not the same kid who went up against D'Andrea a year before and had a very nice game against him?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:40:06 PM)
No matter if it is him or not -- somebody better start getting the job done.

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:40:09 PM)
Any word on our Marine walkon?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:40:25 PM)
Whoever starts getting it done the fastest and the most consistently will see the field.

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:40:26 PM)
Haven't heard much about him lately

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:40:34 PM)
No real news on Reynolds

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:40:40 PM)
Is he here?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:40:50 PM)
He is one of those big body types I would not mind seeing at a DE slot in a year or two

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:40:52 PM)
I think Richardson and Penton will ok at DE. Penton looks like he could play DE and DT like Scott eventually.

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:40:53 PM)
I seem to recall he was here, then left again

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:41:06 PM)
If his speed is legit, then Reynolds could really be a force on the outside

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:41:17 PM)
I believe he is here the last I heard

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:41:27 PM)
Penton to OL a possibility?

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:41:48 PM)
I think Schafer to OL is a bigger possibility.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:41:50 PM)
Richardson and Penton both have solid speed. I just cannot help myself. I love to see the burners on the outside who are big enough and active enough to stop the run as well.

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:41:50 PM)
Good motor

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:41:54 PM)
tough kid

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:42:14 PM)
Penton has looked good on the defensive side of the ball.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:42:14 PM)
It leaves mangled passing and rushing games in its path when a team has that kind of speed.

dalasta (Jul 24, 2003 2:42:21 PM)
How much of a downgrade if any is Douglas to Sims, and will Sims stay at LT and Olivea at RT

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:42:34 PM)
Maupin seems like a BIG kid. Is he quick enough for end? If so, he could be a force

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:42:37 PM)
I dunno Rossford. That will be up to him and the staff. I think Schaffer to Oline is a better possibility as well

dalasta (Jul 24, 2003 2:43:18 PM)
or will Datish step up?

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:43:19 PM)
Penton on DL could end up like Anderson IMO. He has that determination

topsyturv (Jul 24, 2003 2:43:30 PM)
Maupin looked pretty quick in the Big 33. I was very impressed with his and Patterson's play.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:43:34 PM)
Where they stay will be checked out in the fall practice. My thought is that the loss of Douglas hurts depth, but Sims is more than adequate. He played in the Fiesta after all and also against PSU

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:43:35 PM)
The only plus in the Douglas situation is that if he can get a 6th yr and is healthy we will have him and Sims at tackles and Mangold at C. That would be the start of nice line for a new QB

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:43:58 PM)
Was it Sims or Mangold that started in the Fiesta?

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:44:01 PM)

dalasta (Jul 24, 2003 2:44:02 PM)

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:44:14 PM)
I am not sure what will happen with Maupin. I suspect the staff will get him in practice and look at where he best helps the team and can be the best long term.

dalasta (Jul 24, 2003 2:44:30 PM)
They gave Mangold a horrible rating in NCAA 2004

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:44:40 PM)
Datish is still there. He has the tools from all reports. Kinda like Mike D'Andrea

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:44:42 PM)
I agree dalasta, I had to fix that!

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:44:53 PM)
I thought Mangold did a good job last year

Hubbard (Jul 24, 2003 2:44:57 PM)
I bumped Mangold up to over an 80

dalasta (Jul 24, 2003 2:45:02 PM)
Especially when they are talking about starting him

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:45:11 PM)
He did. He had key blocks on scoring runs vs. Illinois and Miami

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:45:13 PM)
Magonld, Sims, Datish and Coleman will be a good start to the OL in '04

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:45:24 PM)
well... how did the game rate OSU? Maybe #1 and NATIONAL CHAMPIONS?

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:45:32 PM)

RossfordBuck (Jul 24, 2003 2:45:32 PM)
They will be a good star to the OL in '03

dalasta (Jul 24, 2003 2:45:42 PM)
Very good

topsyturv (Jul 24, 2003 2:45:45 PM)
a 99, the no. 1 team in the game

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:45:49 PM)
Ohio State is definitely in better shape on the line than in the past 5 years.

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:46:07 PM)
Rossford, I think Clarke, Step, Olivea, and Bishop will have something to say about the line this year

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:46:08 PM)
They are not to where they want to be I am sure because Tressel is not the kind to get lazy and be satisfied

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:46:16 PM)
Touch not be to be in better shape on the OL than in recent past.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:46:35 PM)
yes - I agree

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:46:48 PM)
When you cannot even field a two-deep, you are in trouble

dalasta (Jul 24, 2003 2:46:53 PM)
Lol, yeah

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:47:01 PM)
I don't care what level of football you are talking about --- let alone D-IA

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:47:25 PM)
how inviting do you think the depth chart is to guys like Byers and Gallimore after talking to them?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:47:38 PM)
Well, I would say that it does not hurt

topsyturv (Jul 24, 2003 2:48:02 PM)
How are we looking with Byers and Gallimore?

dalasta (Jul 24, 2003 2:48:17 PM)
Oh, Babb, do you know the reason why Derek Morris left the team for NC State, and also, he is rated good in the game also.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:48:19 PM)
They know there will be competition no matter where they go, but when you see that OSU is losing Bishop, Olivea, Stepanovich, and Clarke -- and possibly Douglas... then toss in Cook?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:48:24 PM)
Lots of openings there

topsyturv (Jul 24, 2003 2:48:47 PM)
Is Gallimore the most likely to be a Buck of the two?

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:49:04 PM)
Give me Mitchum, Gallimore, Byers, Freeman, Davis, and Ginn and you could call it a class. I wouldn't want to get greedy...

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:49:10 PM)
It is always difficult to tell with out of state guys Topsy. I will not be comfortable with any out of state verbal until they sign the dotted line.

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:49:18 PM)
and Braxton...

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:49:27 PM)
Any news on Brandon Barrett? Is he still hot for us/us for him? What about the WR from Jersey that was at camp and is rated very high by Lemming?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:49:37 PM)
You would need to ask Geiger on that one (Morris)

topsyturv (Jul 24, 2003 2:49:41 PM)
Dwayne Jarret

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:50:12 PM)
I would say that OSU is in the thick of things for both guys, but I would not call either an Ohio State lean

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:50:14 PM)
What date do the freshman report?

topsyturv (Jul 24, 2003 2:50:31 PM)
Has the coaching staff

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:50:32 PM)
Lol Nutty. Not greedy at all with that list

topsyturv (Jul 24, 2003 2:50:34 PM)

topsyturv (Jul 24, 2003 2:50:47 PM)
Has the coaching staff's interest cooled on Brandon Barret?

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:50:58 PM)
Yeah, greed is one of the seven deadly sins! lol

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:51:04 PM)
I could not tell you since the coaches are not allowed to talk to folks about who they want

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:51:14 PM)
Losing to scUM is the 8th deadly sin!

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:51:17 PM)
I would say that with their current targets, space is running out for WRs

topsyturv (Jul 24, 2003 2:51:19 PM)
It seems like they are backing off on him a little bit.

topsyturv (Jul 24, 2003 2:51:37 PM)
I don't know, maybe just my opinion.

dalasta (Jul 24, 2003 2:51:44 PM)
Why with the guys we have now and Schegel coming next year, did John Kerr decide to come and say he will start?

dalasta (Jul 24, 2003 2:51:53 PM)
I know hes good but man.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:52:15 PM)
Recruiting has a flow to it. It is almost like a draft. Depending on who is on your board and is not spoken for - you have targets.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:52:31 PM)
Kerr and most of these guys have supreme confidence.

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:52:44 PM)
247 lbs and runs a 4.6. Kerr could play OLB and be a force. I can't wait to see of LB corp in '04. Rotate a fresh 3 in every other series. All 6 will be beasts in the 4th Q

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:52:52 PM)
They have yet to see a place where they could not start in their entire career. They have always been the best

dalasta (Jul 24, 2003 2:53:10 PM)
Good points

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:53:13 PM)
In the case of Schlegel and Kerr - both proved they are pretty good at the D-IA level

dalasta (Jul 24, 2003 2:53:26 PM)
Yeah, i really like Schlegel.

dalasta (Jul 24, 2003 2:53:37 PM)
Sucks for AF.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:53:48 PM)
I cannot wait either. I think OSU is building talent on the defense. If they continue to do so, then it will become very difficult to beat the Buckeyes.

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:53:52 PM)
Spielman likes him too and that is good enough for me

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:53:57 PM)
10 win seasons could become run of the mill

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:54:00 PM)
Kirk, can we expect some reports from Dave Biddle if the practices are opened up?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:54:11 PM)
Yes - when Spiels likes a guy - I listen as well

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:54:16 PM)
Lukens wearing #36 better step up and keep the tradition alive or else

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:54:29 PM)
Nutty, Biddle and I both are going to try and go whenever they are open

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:54:42 PM)

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:55:03 PM)
Dave and I are not sure how many will be open this year what with the media crush to cover the Bucks.

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:55:09 PM)
I'd like to see Spielman coaching at OSU some day. He'd make a great LB coach to start...

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:55:16 PM)
Plus, the recent reports cannot have helped the situation either

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:55:21 PM)
I 2nd that BuckNutty

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:55:32 PM)
Agree on that. I think most OSU people would love to see it.

dalasta (Jul 24, 2003 2:55:41 PM)
I know i would.

topsyturv (Jul 24, 2003 2:55:45 PM)
Do you see us giving out a scholarshiip this year to a punter? Is our walk on Pierce capable of handling the job once Sanders is gone?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:55:48 PM)
The thing is that being a coach requires so much sacrifice on the part of a family.

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:56:07 PM)
With Spielman as a LB coach, he would have intimidated Crable into coming to OSU

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:56:11 PM)
Chris is such a family man I am not sure he would be willing to do what it takes and give so much up

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:56:41 PM)
I think the staff is going to see what happens with Pierce first

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:56:53 PM)
Didn't Spielman interview to be the Head Coach after Cooper was fired?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:56:55 PM)
However, they could very well be offering some kid without the knowledge of everyone else

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:57:04 PM)
Yes - Spiels was given an interview

dalasta (Jul 24, 2003 2:57:11 PM)
Will Sander not scare me like Nugent did his Freshman year.

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:57:14 PM)
Do you think Sander will do a nice job punting this year?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:57:29 PM)
I am very concerned about BJ.

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:57:39 PM)

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:57:43 PM)
Groom was all-world last year

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:57:44 PM)
He has the leg. It's just getting it of in time and consistency. If he is on he will be a stud

dalasta (Jul 24, 2003 2:57:54 PM)
that was scary

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:57:59 PM)
Go back and look at the game tapes. Look at his 4th quarter and clutch punts

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:58:05 PM)
Luke Fickell seemed pretty confident in him in the report Dave Biddle did on the board

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:58:15 PM)
I think Sander MIGHT be able to do it, but until I see it on the field?

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:58:25 PM)
Let's hope that we don't put our punter in those situations again this year

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:58:39 PM)
I am taking the same attitude I did with the defense in the spring of 2002 and the placekicking. Prove you are the man.

dalasta (Jul 24, 2003 2:58:49 PM)
Me too, thats why im scared, i hated when we scored a TD 2 years ago and Nugent had to try to kick the XP, i prayed every time

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:58:56 PM)
Is it me or do we need our return game to take some kicks to the house this year. Taht has hardly happened the last few years.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:59:27 PM)
I said it in the winter of 2001 and spring of 2002 - if the defense would hold teams to under 20, then OSU would stand a shot at a great season. In 2001, OSU would have been 10-2 with that kind of defense.

scribeohio (Jul 24, 2003 2:59:30 PM)
Charles, who do you like a QB recruits? Did you get to see Joe Baserman?

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:59:33 PM)
But look at Nugent. He went from having to say a prayer for to being an All-American the next year

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 2:59:36 PM)
Is Bam gonna score this year?? I just want to see him produce in a game one time!

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 2:59:47 PM)
I have not seen Joe B.

dalasta (Jul 24, 2003 2:59:54 PM)
Yeah, I am very Impressed with Nugent

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 2:59:59 PM)
I would like to see Bam do something as well

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 3:00:05 PM)
Mike, the coaches are not satisfied with the return game either. They talked about it this year

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 3:00:29 PM)
Bam and everyone else who wants to return kicks better hang onto the football

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 3:00:33 PM)
Is it more of the returner not doing a good job or the blocking scheme being executed in front of them?

scribeohio (Jul 24, 2003 3:00:34 PM)
Charles, I heard that Lydell is about 225. How has he looked to you at that weight?

topsyturv (Jul 24, 2003 3:00:39 PM)
Is Gamble going to return punts? Is that risking an injury too much?

I am not sure Mike. To know that would require the coaches talking about specific blocking schemes and responsibilities.

Kirk (Jul 24, 2003 3:01:24 PM)
We're going to wrap it up in a few min... be sure to post any last questions

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 3:01:25 PM)
Lydell's biggest issue is not size but durability

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 3:01:39 PM)
If he can stay healthy, then he could make a serious impact.

Mike68 (Jul 24, 2003 3:01:46 PM)
It seems like we never even come that close to breaking one. Nice returns most of the time, but not the difference maker

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 3:01:53 PM)
We gonna throw to the backs more this year??

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 3:02:02 PM)
Frankly, I would love to see either he or Hall be able to redshirt

scribeohio (Jul 24, 2003 3:02:04 PM)
I really enjoyed your series on JT, wins/losses, and running vs passing offense. With many top schools like ND/UM going with left coast I wonder if they will have the success they think. Your thoughts?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 3:02:37 PM)
Gamble might, but then again - pull out a tape of that SPring game. OSU looks to have several candidates. I would save Gamble for other tasks to avoid injury without the halo rule this year.

topsyturv (Jul 24, 2003 3:03:03 PM)
Good point. I think Santanio Holmes would make a very good punter returner.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 3:03:30 PM)
Nutty - much of that will depend on the offensive line. If you have to hold the backs in the backfield to protect Craig because the line cannot -- then you cannot throw to them as much.

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 3:03:47 PM)
Holmes scared me a little with the fumble, but he's gonna be a special player.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 3:03:50 PM)
Scribe, I think the single biggest factor is defense

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 3:04:20 PM)
Without a great defense, you will not win. Then build your special teams. Then put in your offense. You can run just about any offense, but it must be productive in the red zone.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 3:04:38 PM)
Fumbles=ride the pine

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 3:05:16 PM)
Look at ND last year. They had basically no offense

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 3:05:24 PM)
They had defense and special teams.

Kirk (Jul 24, 2003 3:05:56 PM)
Ok we're going to wrap it up now. Thanks for stopping by... any last questions?

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 3:06:01 PM)
On the backs... It will also depend on the QBs making all their reads

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 3:06:22 PM)
If they make their reads (which also requires time from the offensive line), then they can throw to the backs

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 3:06:38 PM)
and finally... running screens requires linemen fast enough and in shape.

topsyturv (Jul 24, 2003 3:06:58 PM)
Thanks Charles.

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 3:07:04 PM)
I think the coaches would probably love to do more offensively but were limited by personnel

BuckNutty (Jul 24, 2003 3:07:06 PM)
Thanks Charles and Kirk!

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 3:07:08 PM)
No problem

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 3:07:23 PM)
Once the season starts there will be a whole lot more to talk about

Charles Babb (Jul 24, 2003 3:11:22 PM)
Talk to you later guys.
