Urban Meyer's Michigan recruiting pipeline to Ohio State keeps flowing

Ohio State has been a consistent presence in the state of Michigan on the recruiting front lately.

While Michigan football practices in Florida, a Michigan high school football player became an Ohio State verbal commit.

The former is a new development, but the latter isn’t  as rare as one might expect.

Three-star athlete prospect Antjuan Simmons of Ann Arbor Pioneer High School could be the fifth player from the Great Lakes State to sign with the Buckeyes since Urban Meyer took over as head coach of the Buckeyes in late 2011.

(Thanks in no small part to assistant coach Kerry Coombs.)

After nabbing none in his first two classes, Meyer signed four-star Damon Webb out of Detroit Cass Tech in 2014 and then took two more Technicians, four-star running back Mike Weber and three-star defensive tackle Joshua Alabi, a year later.

Last month, Canton offensive lineman Michael Jordan became Meyer’s fourth Michigan signee and the 20th player from the state to sign with Ohio State since 1990.

Jim Tressel signed six players from Michigan in his 10-plus years in Columbus, including eventual stars Johnathan Hankins (Detroit Southeastern) and Vernon Gholston (Cass Tech), who was an All-Big Ten player before he became better known as an NFL draft bust.

Tressel’s predecessor, John Cooper, signed 10 players from Michigan during his 13 years on the job.

Those efforts produced a pair of notable starters in linebacker Ryan Miller (Allen Park) and quarterback Craig Krenzel (Utica Ford).

Of course, Michigan has made a living off Ohio high school talent for decades, but news of the latest player to head the other direction comes after a recruiting season in which Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh signed no one from Ohio and only two of the top 10 players in Michigan.

The latter total matched how many were signed by Notre Dame and trailed Michigan State’s three.

For 2017, Harbaugh has two commits from prospects in Michigan, including four-star offensive tackle Jaraymond Hall of Oak Park.
