Ohio State Head Football Coach Urban Meyer Addressed The Media After Third Spring Practice

Ohio State returned to practice after spring break and Urban Meyer addressed the media to discuss practice and other topics.

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer met with the media after the third spring practice of 2016. Below are some of the main takeaways from his press conference.

  • Meyer said "We are looking at everything," when it comes to holding a spring practice in Florida, though he was clear he did not want to take spring break away from his players. Overall he downplayed the idea that the Buckeyes would make the trip south.
  • Meyer said he and Tom Herman "talk quite often." Said he has offered advice to Herman about handling expectations at a program and compared it in a way to the expectations placed on the Buckeyes last year.
  • Tim Hinton and Ed Warinner gained praise from Meyer on their work with Marcus Baugh. Said Baugh was close to being dismissed from the program as a young player with off the field issues. He's come a long way as he is now the only veteran in the tight ends room.
  • "It's hard to say no to a great player," Meyer said about out of state players committing to OSU before an official visit. He knows that those commitments are not exactly guarantees and that those players will have to be continually recruited until the sign, though he said once they get on campus for a visit he feels Ohio State is at an advantage. Meyer also said offering middle school athletes is "silly stuff."
  • Meyer said having J.T. Barrett and Pat Elflein back to lead the offense gives them a shot to be very successful, called their return invaluable. Without their return it would be nearly impossible to have a  successful offense, he said, but with a center and quarterback set the Buckeyes have a chance to be good on that side of the ball.
  • Meyer said he has seen Barrett be a leader in the weight room in addition to the field. Said Barrett is one of the best leaders he has ever had.
  • Meyer said he has been asked the most about Cardale Jones and Braxton Miller from NFL scouts. Called them "wild cards" because they have relatively little film. Meyer added he is hearing positive things about all of his players as they go through the interview process.
  • Dontre Wilson has a "sore foot" but will be full go next week according to Meyer. Meyer added both Wilson and Curtis Samuel will take reps at running back during the spring. With the loss of Ezekiel Elliott expect the Buckeyes to use the H position more in their running game next season.
  • Meyer said Evan Lisle was sick and missed practice. Added Lisle is in the mix for the open right guard position, though that spot was manned by Demetrius Knox today. Meyer added that they have plenty of talent along the offensive line but the level of play needs to be elevated.
  • The Buckeyes are set to scrimmage on Saturday. Meyer said he is interested to see how Joe Burrow reacts in that situation.
