Urban Meyer Updates, April 11

Urban Meyer addressed the media April 11 after the Buckeyes 12th spring practice of 2016.

After a weekend in which Ohio State lost a legend in Will Smith, and the NCAA ended the satellite camp era, Urban Meyer addressed the media to address those topics and preview the spring game after the 12th practice of the spring.

  • Meyer said "probably hundreds of scholarships" are offered by MAC schools at Ohio State's camps. Added he hopes the NCAA revisits the ruling. "I am not saying what is right or wrong." Called the texting rule that the NCAA passed, "The most ignorant thing I have ever heard." Meyer said he believes student-athletes need more input in rulings such as the ones the NCAA has passed.
  • Meyer said Luke Fickell sent him a text when the Will Smith news came out. Said the team had a moment of silence at practice for Smith and his family.
  • Meyer said Joey Burrow has improved his release since he has been at Ohio State. Added he lacks the athleticism that J.T. Barrett has.
  • Meyer said Burrow and Stephen Collier will likely be live during the spring game. Said Barrett will play sparingly in a no-contact jersey.
  • Tracy Sprinkle and James Clark were the two names that came to Meyer's mind as to who has improved the most during spring ball.
  • Meyer said Dre'Mont Jones had his best day as Buckeye in the 12th practice of the spring.
  • Meyer said Mike Weber and Bri'onte Dunn are close to earning the No. 1 RB spot. He added Antonio Williams is still coming along and not quite ready to make the jump to first team yet.
  • Meyer said this years spring game is more important than last year. Said he hopes to get 100,000 fans in the Shoe. Mentioned Burrow and Weber as players he wants to see play in a game like atmosphere.
  • Meyer said Barrett is "having a great spring." Noted improved play in the last week.
  • He said players like Sprinkle and Marcus Baugh have come a long way since off the field issues. He said Sprinkle "has grown out of that mess." Added that players like that are on probationary status.
  • Meyer said Austin Mack, Michael Jordan, Malik Barrow, Williams and others have been the freshmen he has been most impressed with.
