Countdown To Kickoff: Best Buckeye Ever To Wear No. 28

As the countdown to Ohio State's season opener against Bowling Green gets closer, the Buckeye Sports staff is continuing its Best Buckeye Ever series. We stand just 28 days from kickoff, so it is time to reveal our pick for the Best Buckeye Ever to don that number.

A total of 37 players have worn No. 28 while playing for Ohio State, but three 21st century running backs caught the eye of the Buckeye Sports staff when looking at the list (which can be found below).

Of those three players, Maurice Hall comes in at a distant third, but he was certainly a serviceable player for the Buckeyes. Hall had career total of 236 carries, 974 yards and six touchdowns – including key scores against Illinois and Michigan down the stretch in 2002 – but he made a big impact as a kick returner as well. Hall finished his career with 1,642 kick return yards, which stands to this day as the most in program history.

Jonathan Wells was the proud owner of the digits for Y2K after playing sparingly as a freshman and sophomore from 1998-99. Wells took a bigger step toward the starting spot in 2000 when he ran for 598 yards and six touchdowns, but really got things going as a senior in 2001, rushing for 1,257 yards and 15 touchdowns on 232 carries. The Louisiana native had career totals of 460 carries for 2,344 yards and 26 touchdowns before gaining 1,167 yards and scoring 10 touchdowns during a four-year NFL career with the Houston Texans.

As good as Wells was, though, he wasn't even the best player with that last name to wear No. 28 for the Buckeyes.

Chris "Beanie" Wells is fifth on Ohio State's all-time list for rushing yardage with 3,382 yards on 585 career carries. Beanie was a wrecking ball for the Buckeyes during his three-year career, with his best season coming in 2007 as a sophomore. He totaled 1,609 yards that year, to go along with 15 of his 30 career touchdowns, helping Ohio State to a berth in the national title game for the second straight year.

In the eyes of the Buckeye Sports staff, Beanie Wells gets the definite nod as the best Buckeye ever to wear No. 28. Head to the BuckeyeSports.com message boards to weigh in on the conversation.
