Countdown To Kickoff: Best Buckeye Ever To Wear No. 27

As the countdown to Ohio State's season opener against Bowling Green gets closer, the Buckeye Sports staff is continuing its Best Buckeye Ever series. We stand just 27 days from kickoff, so it is time to reveal our pick for the Best Buckeye Ever to don that number.

With many of the numbers we have had on this list, it is more often than not a tough decision between of few players. This is not one of those cases.

From 1992-95, Eddie George graced the Ohio State backfield and terrorized opposing defenses with his hard-nosed running style and deceptive speed. Despite only starting two full seasons as a Buckeye, the Philadelphia native left his mark in multiple spots in the Buckeye record book.

George had a tough freshman campaign, as he struggled with ball security. A pair of fumbles all but cost the Buckeyes a game against Illinois in 1992, as the Illini returned a George fumble 96 yards for a score. After sitting behind Raymont Harris in 1993, George earned the starting spot in 1994 and exploded onto the scene for 1,442 rushing yards and 12 scores, including 71 yards and a score in coach John Cooper's first win over Michigan.

His senior campaign was one of the best in Ohio State history, as his 1,927 rushing yards in 1995 still stands as the most by a Buckeye in a single season. During that season, he gave Buckeye fans one of the most iconic runs in program history, scampering 61 yards up the sideline before eventually scoring from three yards out to help OSU pull off the win over the Irish.

George's single season record breaking performance earned him the 1995 Heisman Trophy over the likes of Tommy Frazier and sophomore Peyton Manning.

After being selected 14th overall in the 1996 NFL Draft, George went on to star for the Houston Oilers and Tennessee Titans before retiring in 2004 after a season with the Dallas Cowboys.

George has since been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and had his No. 27 jersey retired by the school.
