Countdown To Kickoff: Best Buckeye Ever To Wear No. 25

As the countdown to Ohio State's season opener against Bowling Green gets closer, the Buckeye Sports staff is continuing its Best Buckeye Ever series. We stand just 25 days from kickoff, so it is time to reveal our pick for the Best Buckeye Ever to don that number.

As we hit just 25 days to kickoff, we again at Buckeye Sports hit quite the dilemma as to who we should select for our Best Buckeye Ever to wear No. 25 for the Scarlet and Gray.

A few names come to mind, and one of the first that was mentioned is former Ohio State safety Donnie Nickey. Nickey was a four year starter at Ohio State and most notably, a team captain on the Buckeyes 2002 national title winning team.

While he wasn't going to wow anyone with his athleticism, Nickey was incredibly consistent and was the last player to touch the ball in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl win over Miami (FL), knocking the ball to the turf on the Hurricanes final offensive play. Nickey left Ohio State as an academic All-Big Ten selection in 1999 and was a fifth round draft selection of the Tennessee Titans in the 2003 NFL Draft. He played his entire eight year professional career in Nashville before overcoming some personal demons after his retirement from football.

Second on our list is former Buckeye running back Antonio Pittman. A three year player at Ohio State, Pittman sat behind Lydell Ross in 2004 before exploding onto the scene in 2005 as the starting running back. In his sophomore season, Pittman rushed for 1,331 and added seven rushing scores, including the game winner against Michigan in Ann Arbor.

In 2006, despite sharing reps with freshman Chris Wells, Pittman again led Ohio State in rushing with 1,233 rushing yards in addition to doubling his touchdown output from the year prior, finishing with 14. After falling to Florida in the national championship game 41-14, Pittman announced he would turn pro and was selected in the fourth round of the 2006 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints. He never played a down for the Saints however, and ended up with the St. Louis Rams, where he played just two seasons.

Our selection for the Best Buckeye Ever to wear No. 25 goes to another former OSU running back, Carlos Snow.

Snow exploded onto the scene as a freshman, collecting 759 total yards and six touchdowns, the most memorable of which came against Michigan in 1987 when he took a Tom Tupa swing pass 70 yards for a score in what would be Earle Bruce's last game as head coach.

Snow led the Buckeyes in rushing three different times, in 1988 (775), 1989 (990) and 1991 (828) and ranks second in school history in all-purpose yardage with 4,851 yards, behind only Archie Griffin's 6,559. Snow was also a standout on special teams as a return man, ranking third in school history in career return yardage. He currently ranks 10th on OSU's all time rushing yards list with 2,999 career yards.

Earning an honorable mention is Todd Bell, who was a three year starter in Ohio State's secondary from 1978-80. Bell was a two-time first-team all-Big Ten selection and was a fourth round pick of the Chicago Bears in 1981.
