Countdown To Kickoff: Best Buckeye To Wear No. 24

As the countdown to Ohio State's season opener against Bowling Green gets closer, the Buckeye Sports staff is continuing its Best Buckeye Ever series. We stand just 24 days from kickoff, so it is time to reveal our pick for the Best Buckeye Ever to don that number.

We are now just over three weeks from the start of Ohio State's season as the Buckeyes will host Bowling Green in just 24 days. As such, we at Buckeye Sports are continuing our countdown of great Buckeyes to wear No. 24 for the Scarlet and Gray.

Though specialists are rarely considered for such an honor, Drew Basil should not be discounted. The Ohio State placekicker from 2011-13 and led the team in scoring in 2011.

Basil connected on 169 extra points throughout his career, missing just four in his career for a .977 percentage. The kicker also hit 33 of 42 field goals while at Ohio State, including connecting on four in the final game of the 2012 season against Michigan to help seal a perfect season.

In total, Basil finished his career with 268 points, the ninth-most of any Buckeye and sixth-most of all kickers.

Also under consideration among former No. 24s is Tom Campana. A return specialisfrom 1969-71, Campana did a little bit of everything for the Buckeyes and finished his career with 33 rushes for 146 yards and 20 receptions for 307 yards and four touchdowns.

Campana's best attribute, however, came in the return game. He had 447 punt return yards in 1971, the third-best mark in Ohio State history. He returned punts for 166 yards at Michigan that year, and while the Buckeyes dropped that game 10-7, it remains the second-most return yards in a single game in the program's history.

The receiver averaged 10.7 yards per return in his career, finishing with 535 punt return yards in his career.

With all due respect to Basil and Campana, however, the clear selection for best Buckeye to wear No. 24 is Shawn Springs. A lock-down corner at Ohio State from 1993 to 1996, Springs started in all 37 games after redshirting his freshman year.

Springs was an All-Big Ten selection in his final two seasons as a Buckeye and was a consensus All-American in 1996 and was the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. He broke up 15 passes that season, tied for third all-time at Ohio State, despite rarely being thrown at. The cornerback finished with 25 pass break-ups in his three-year career, the sixth-most all time.

Following his career at Ohio State Springs was selected No. 3 overall in the 1997 NFL Draft. He played 13 seasons in the NFL, recording 33 interceptions and an All-Pro appearance in 2004.
