Countdown To Kickoff: Best Buckeye Ever To Wear No. 23

As the countdown to Ohio State's season opener against Bowling Green gets closer, the Buckeye Sports staff is continuing its Best Buckeye Ever series. We stand just 23 days from kickoff, so it is time to reveal our pick for the Best Buckeye Ever to don that number.

There are now just 23 days that separate us from kickoff in Ohio Stadium, and with that being said, it is time to reveal our picks for the Best Buckeye Ever to wear that number.

While this one was not exactly a no brainer, it does have a few solid names on the list. To start out, we will go with our third pick, safety Craig Cassady.

The son of Ohio State Heisman Trophy winner Howard 'Hopalong' Cassady, Craig started just one season in the Buckeye defensive backfield, but he made the most of that 1975 season. Craig Cassady still sits in a two way tie with Mike Sensibaugh for most interceptions in a single season in program history with nine and is also tied for the school record for most picks in a single game with three, coming against Michigan State in 1975.

Cassady was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the eighth round of the 1976 NFL Draft, playing just one season before hanging up the cleats.

Second on our list, is the always joyful, now former Buckeye safety Tyvis Powell.

Powell was the first Buckeye recruit to commit to Ohio State after the departure of Jim Tressel from the program and made his mark on OSU football in his four years on campus. After redshirting the 2012 season, Powell saw a solid amount of time as a freshman, starting five games and making 48 tackles. All of that is usually forgotten by Ohio State fans however, after his interception of Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner on a two point conversion attempt in the 2013 edition of 'The Game' sealed a 42-41 Buckeye victory.

Powell earned a starting job as a third year sophomore and started all 15 games as the Buckeyes won their first national title since 2002. Once again, Powell made one of the biggest plays of the game, intercepting an Alabama 'Hail Mary' attempt on the final play of the 2015 Sugar Bowl to send Ohio State to the national title game against Oregon.

After earning his degree and collecting 71 tackles and three interceptions in 2015, Powell decided to turn pro and enter his name for the NFL Draft. Despite going undrafted, Powell was signed as a free agent by the Seattle Seahawks where he is currently fighting for a roster spot.

While you could certainly make an argument for Powell as the Best Buckeye Ever to wear No. 23, we at Buckeye Sports are giving that honor to former Buckeye running back, Ron Springs.

Springs played for Ohio State from 1976-78 and was a featured back in Woody Hayes' offense. In 1977, he led the Buckeyes in rushing with 1,166 yards on the ground to go along with seven scores. He would earn first team All-Big Ten honors in 1977 and be a team captain on Hayes' final team at OSU in 1978.

Sadly, Springs died of a heart attack in 2011 after slipping into a coma in 2007. His 1,166 yards in 1977 stands as the 25th best single season rushing performance in school history.
