Countdown To Kickoff: Best Buckeye Ever To Wear No. 20

As the countdown to Ohio State's season opener against Bowling Green gets closer, the Buckeye Sports staff is continuing its Best Buckeye Ever series. We stand just 20 days from kickoff, so it is time to reveal our pick for the Best Buckeye Ever to don that number.

Anytime you are a first round draft pick in the NFL, the chances are you are one of the best to ever do it at your school. The same goes for the player we are giving the Best Buckeye Ever award to here as we hit 20 days until kickoff.

Despite starting just two seasons at Ohio State, corner Nate Clements established himself as one of the best defensive backs in Buckeye history in his three years on campus. From 1998-2000, Clements intercepted seven passes for John Cooper's defense, four of them coming in his final season in 2000.

Clements was also a standout on special teams for the Buckeyes as a return man. The Cleveland native ranks second in program history for punt return yards in a single season, collecting 513 in his junior campaign. Also in just three seasons, Clements was able to break up 22 passes, ranking him ninth in school history in that category.

Clements declared himself for the 2001 NFL Draft after his junior season and was selected in the first round by the Buffalo Bills, where he spent half of his 12 year professional career. He collected 36 career interceptions in the NFL and was known for his hard hitting ability from the corner position. Perhaps his most famous hit came against former Michigan quarterback Tom Brady during Clements' rookie season. Clements finished his NFL career with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2012.

Another name that deserves mention at this number is another former Buckeye cornerback, Donald Washington. Washington started just one full season at Ohio State, but saw the field often before his senior season as a nickel back. Washington declared early for the NFL after the 2008 season, and was selected in the fourth round by the Kansas City Chiefs. He spent just two seasons with the Chiefs before being released. After playing the last two seasons in the CFL, Washington is currently attempting a NFL comeback with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

We will also give a shout out to kicker Aaron Pettrey, who kicked for the Buckeyes from 2006-09. Pettrey ranks second in program history for most career field goal makes of more than 50+ yards with six converted kicks.
