Countdown To Kickoff: Best Buckeye Ever To Wear No. 14

As the countdown to Ohio State's season opener against Bowling Green gets closer, the Buckeye Sports staff is continuing its Best Buckeye Ever series. We stand just 14 days from kickoff, so it is time to reveal our pick for the Best Buckeye Ever to don that number.

Just two weeks separate us from the beginning of the Ohio State football season kicking off at Ohio Stadium against Bowling Green on Sept. 3.

With 14 days left, we are unveiling our pick for the Best Buckeye Ever to wear the No. 14.

While there may not be many breakout stars on this list, one name stood out more than the others. Quarterback turned linebacker Eric Kumerow was a stellar defensive player from 1984-87 and racked up stats that still stand in the top five in school history.

Kumerow's 23 career sacks rank him fifth all time in school history, three sacks behind his nephew, Joey Bosa who was just drafted third overall in the 2016 NFL Draft. A three year starter at outside linebacker, Kumerow would also line up as a defensive end in the Buckeye defense and played well enough at that spot to earn the Big Ten's Defensive Lineman of the Year award in 1986.

His stellar performance in 1986 earned him first team All-Big Ten honors and in 1987, he was named a team captain. He followed up his impressive junior season with another solid year in 1987, once again earning first team conference honors and was selected in the first round of the 1988 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins where he spent just three seasons.

Bobby Hoying is next up here. The former Buckeye signal caller ranks third all time in total offense in school history and led the Buckeyes in passing three straight seasons. His 7,151 career yards is only bested by Art Schlichter (8,850) and Braxton Miller (8,609). Hoying finished 10th in the Heisman voting in 1995, the same year teammate Eddie George took home the trophy.

Hoying would be drafted in the third round of the 1996 NFL Draft, and spent time with the Eagles and Raiders before rounding out his career.

Other names to note on this list include linebacker Curtis Grant (2011-14) and cornerback Antonio Smith (2002-06). Grant was a five star recruit out of high school and never quite lived up to the hype until his senior season, being named a captain and starting middle linebacker on Ohio State's national title winning 2014 team. Smith started his career as a walk-on, but eventually ended up winning the starting cornerback job opposite Malcolm Jenkins in 2006. Smith earned first team All-Big Ten honors that season and left Ohio State as a three time Academic All-Big Ten selection.
