Countdown To Kickoff: Best Buckeye Ever To Wear No. 3

As the countdown to Ohio State's season opener against Bowling Green gets closer, the Buckeye Sports staff is continuing its Best Buckeye Ever series. We stand just three days from kickoff, so it is time to reveal our pick for the Best Buckeye Ever to don that number.

There are just three days keeping us from kickoff in Ohio Stadium as Ohio State is set to open the 2016 season against Bowling Green. That said, it is time to discuss the Best Buckeye Ever to wear the No. 3.

There are a few solid names on this list, but it is hard not to go with recently graduated wide receiver Michael Thomas (2012-15). Thomas led Ohio State in receptions in both 2014 an 2015 and in just two years as a starter, caught 18 touchdown passes, eighth in program history.

After playing sparingly as a true freshman in 2012, Thomas was redshirted in 2013. After missing an entire season, Thomas exploded onto the scene in 2014, catching 54 passes for 799 yards as the Buckeyes took home their first national title since 2002. He caught nine touchdown passes that season, none more memorable than his scoring grab against Alabama in the 2015 Sugar Bowl just before halftime.

After once again leading Ohio State in receiving as a redshirt junior, Thomas elected to enter the 2016 NFL Draft, where he was selected in the second round by the New Orleans Saints. His 1,602 career receiving yards at Ohio State rank him 18th in school history.

Another wide receiver that made a significant mark on program history is Dimitrious Stanley (1993-96). Stanley led the 1996 Buckeyes in receptions with 43 for 829 yards and ranks tied for 16th in career touchdown receptions with 13. His final collegiate touchdown is by far his most memorable, as he took a pass from quarterback Joe Germaine 72 yards for a touchdown against Arizona State in the 1997 Rose Bowl to help the Buckeyes to a win.

Another name to note on this list is running back Brandon Saine (2007-10). Saine was a captain of the Buckeyes 2010 team and a starter on Ohio State's Rose Bowl winning team in 2009. Saine scored the opening touchdown in the 2010 Rose Bowl and spent two years in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers before his career was over.
