Countdown To Kickoff: Best Buckeye Ever To Wear No. 1

As the countdown to Ohio State's season opener against Bowling Green gets closer, the Buckeye Sports staff is continuing its Best Buckeye Ever series. We stand just one day from kickoff, so it is time to reveal our pick for the Best Buckeye Ever to don that number.

Just one day. One day keeps us from kickoff in Ohio Stadium and the beginning of the 2016 college football season. With that we reveal our pick as the Best Buckeye Ever to wear No. 1.

Before we begin, I would like to note that Braxton Miller was not considered in contention here because he was already named as our Best Buckeye Ever at No. 5. That said, he at least deserves a mention for what he did as a receiver at Ohio State.

Now, our pick as the Best Buckeye Ever to wear No. 1 is former Ohio State punter/kicker, Tom Skladany (1973-76). Skladany was a three time first team All-American, making him just one of eight Ohio State players in history to accomplish that feat. As a kicker, Skladany wasn't always accurate, but had one of the strongest legs in program history. His 59 yard field goal against Illinois in 1975 still stands as the longest conversion in program history.

Skladany had most of his success as a punter, where he averaged 42.7 yards per punt for his career, the fifth best average in school history. He was a team captain in 1976 as well as a two time first team All-Big Ten selection.

Next on our list is corner Bradley Roby (2010-13). After redshirting his first year on campus, Roby earned a starting spot in 2011 and while Ohio State limped to a 6-7 season, Roby exploded onto the scene tying for the team lead in interceptions (three) and leading the team in pass deflections (nine). In 2012, Urban Meyer arrived and Roby had his best year as a Buckeye. He ranked third on the team in tackles with 63, and collected two more interceptions, returning one for a touchdown against Nebraska. He was named a first team All-American in 2012, a season in which the Buckeyes went undefeated.

In 2013 his numbers dipped slightly, but Roby continued to be a force on defense and special teams. In his time at Ohio State, Roby scored four touchdowns, returning two interceptions for scores and picking up two blocked punts for scores. He ranks first in school history in pass breakups with 36.

A captain of the 1985 Buckeyes, wide receiver Mike Lanese (1982-85) was a two year starter for Earle Bruce. Sometimes forgotten because he played alongside Cris Carter, Lanese was an academic All-American and made a clutch diving catch against Michigan in 1984 to help send the Buckeyes to the Rose Bowl. He ranks 14th in school history in career yards per catch, as he averaged 16.1.

Other notable names to mention include running back Dan Herron (2008-11), linebacker Marcus Freeman (2004-08) and quarterback/kicker Bob Atha (1978-81).

We hope you have enjoyed our Best Buckeye Ever series as we counted down the days to kickoff. Make sure to weigh in on our premium message boards with your thoughts.
