Urban Meyer: Position Groups Must Be At The Tops Of Their Games For CFP Semifinal Matchup

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer met with the media Sunday afternoon to discuss his team being selected into the 2016 College Football Playoff. The No. 3 Buckeyes will play No. 2 Clemson in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl on Dec. 31.

Buckeye head coach Urban Meyer held a press conference Sunday afternoon regarding Ohio State's second appearance in the College Football Playoff

  • Meyer said he watched the CFP selection show from the maternity ward in the hospital after his daughter, Nicki, had a baby around 5:30 this morning.
  • Meyer on his team being in the CFP: "We're going to do the best we can to represent."
  • "You just don't know until you know. A lot of anxiety and a lot hope," Meyer said when asked if he felt his team was going to be in before the selections were officially announced.
  • Meyer on Clemson: "They're loaded. We know (head coach Dabo Swinney) and a lot of respect for them. We know exactly what we're getting into."
  • On Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson: Not a good player, a great player. Not a good person, a great person."
  • Meyer said college football is at its peak right now: "This is the golden years of college football. What I watched last night (conference championship games), it doesn't get any better."
  • Meyer on conference championships: "That's why you go to work every day."
  • Meyer on if the CFP is fun: "It is great. It's very rewarding. It's why you come to Ohio State, understand that the greatest fun of all is when you jog off the field victorious."
  • He said Clemson's skill set on offense is "over top" and that the Tigers and Alabama are probably the top two teams when it comes to NFL prospects..
  • He said for his team to compete at this level, it has to be nine units strong and it hasn't been at times this year. That will be something he and his coaching staff will have to correct, he said.
  • Meyer said he thinks it's a big deal that the Buckeyes did not play a conference championship game because they did not get another week of practice and another week to get better.
  • He ended his presser by saying this: "College football is as strong as its ever been."
