OSU Defensive Coordinator, Linebackers Coach Luke Fickell Has Introductory Press Conference As UC's Head Coach

Ohio State defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Luke Fickell had his introductory press conference as Cincinnati's head football coach Saturday afternoon.

Ohio State defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Luke Fickell addressed the media for the first time as Cincinnati's head coach on Saturday afternoon.

  • Cincinnati athletic director Mike Bohn said Fickell is a coach "who fits Cincinnati." 
  • "This is a true dream to me," Fickell said about becoming the head coach at UC.
  • Fickell said the purpose of this new role is to be a leader of men.
  • "You can't get this far in a profession and life without an amazing amount of support," he said.
  • He thanked former OSU head coach Jim Tressel and current Buckeye head coach Urban Meyer to help him get to this position.
  • Fickell's promise to UC fans: "We'll put a product on the field that you'll be extremely proud to call your own."
  • "Recruiting will be the lifeline to our program," Fickell said. "There's no better high school football than the city of Cincinnati and the state of Ohio."
  • He said he learned a lot of things in his one year as head coach of Ohio State in 2011. The top aspect he learned is to be who you are.
  • "The only reason is because of the players," Fickell said for why he is going to finish out the season at OSU before moving on to Cincinnati. He added that he cherishes the relationships he's built with the players at Ohio State. 
  • "I knew I was ready for it," Fickell said of taking the head coaching job. He added that he has felt ready to become a head coach for a year or two.
  • "I know it's going to be difficult but I got an obligation and I'm fully committed to it," Fickell said of juggling his OSU coaching duties and UC responsibilities.
  • He said he did not have the right passion to be a head coach when he was one for the Buckeyes in 2011. He said his passion has now changed in the last year or two.
  • No comments were made on Ohio State special teams coordinator and cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs possibly joining Fickell's staff at Cincinnati.
