Report: Ohio State Athletic Director Gene Smith To Join CFP Committee

Ohio State's athletic director Gene Smith is reportedly getting a new title.

According to a report by ESPN, Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith is set to join the College Football Playoff selection committee, replacing Wisconsin athletic director and former head football coach Barry Alvarez.

Alvarez has been on the committee since the playoff began in 2014 and his term is set to expire in February along with Condoleezza Rice and Bobby Johnson.

Smith has previously served on the NCAA men's tournament selection committee and has served as Ohio State's athletic director since 2005, replacing Andy Geiger.

Smith played college football at Notre Dame in the 1970's, where he was a part of the Fighting Irish national title winning team in 1973.

If the report is true, Smith would be the only active Big Ten administrator on the active committee. Other current members include Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens, Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long and former Stanford, Notre Dame and Washington head coach Tyrone Willingham.
