WHAT ARE THE STRENGTHS OF DOBBINS? Other than Curtis Samuel, last year's rushing offense at Ohio State featured nobody that could break long runs, as both J.T. Barrett and Mike Weber were more powerful, plodding types, and neither were breakaway threats at all. That is about to change with the addition of J.K. Dobbins, who will add some much needed speed to the offensive backfield. Even though he missed his senior season with an injury, Dobbins showed enough as a junior to create a lot of excitement. He has more than just speed though, as his tape shows plenty of wiggle and the ability to make people miss, and that was lacking at Ohio State in 2016. He is not a small slot back either, like Dontre Wilson or Demario McCall, as Dobbins is a true runningback.
WHAT ABOUT THE INJURY DOBBINS SUFFERED? Dobbins has already enrolled at Ohio State and is going through winter conditioning. He is expected to be fine for spring practice, and certainly healthy enough for next fall. I expect him to have a pretty significant role in the offense, even as a true freshman. We did not see him catch the ball much on his junior film, so we need to see if he can do that. Last year, Weber was no threat at all catching passes out of the backfield, and the hope is that Dobbins can receive those throws instead. He should be a perfect compliment to Weber's power and short yardage prowess.
