Urban Meyer Updates: Ohio State Opens 2017 Spring Practice

Ohio State opened spring practice Wednesday morning, and Urban Meyer met with the media to recap the day and talk OSU offseason.

Urban Meyer met with the media for the first time since National Signing Day to talk about his new look 2017 Buckeyes. Ohio State welcomed 10 new players and multiple new coaches to the practice field.

  • Meyer opened the presser by saying he was impressed with the young players and was happy to see former players like Malik Hooker, Gareon Conley and Pat Elflein come out to support the Buckeyes.
  • Meyer said there are "some new concepts" in the Ohio State passing game and that quarterback J.T. Barrett will get plenty of reps.
  • Meyer defended Barrett with the criticism that has come around him after a tough stretch at the end of the 2016 season. Compared him to Alex Smith in his early career with the San Francisco 49ers. "He was a bad quarterback because he was on a bad team," Meyer said. He added he believes OSU just needs to get better as a whole on offense. He said he believes quarterbacks should be measured on wins/losses.
  • Meyer wouldn't say he had a favorite, but Demetrius Knox was the first name out of his mouth for the opening at right guard. Added Malcolm Pridgeon, Matthew Burrell and others competing for that spot.
  • Meyer said Chris Worley is working at the middle linebacker spot after losing Raekwon McMillan. Dante Booker is working at the strong side linebacker spot with Jerome Baker at the weak side.
  • Meyer confirmed Kyle Trout is still practicing with Ohio State despite still set to transfer to Cincinnati. Trout cannot join UC until he graduates from Ohio State, which he is set to do in May.
  • Meyer said the decision to play Brendon White at wide receiver was made because of need. He said Ohio State is pretty deep at linebacker so they put him at WR. Said he will probably debut for the Buckeyes on special teams.
  • Meyer confirmed Alex Stump has left Ohio State and is pursuing a transfer. Added that James Clark will also pursue a graduate transfer and that he is in good standing with Ohio State. On Tyler Gerald, Meyer said, "He just quit."
  • Meyer mentioned he is excited for Jalyn Harris, Trevon Grimes and Ellijah Gardiner to arrive on campus. Said he was pleased with what he saw from his WR group on day one of spring practice.
  • Meyer on Dwayne Haskins: "We haven't seen the ceiling yet." Also said Joe Burrow is one of the toughest QBs he has had.
  • Meyer said he would like to continue a cornerback rotation. "We would like to play more than three or four."
  • Wayne Davis has been moved to safety, Meyer said.
