After an impressive performance in a state tournament game vs. Upper Arlington, Ohio, on Thursday night, four-star power forward Jerome Hunter out of Pickerington (Ohio) North talked about his recruitment.
Hunter, who finished with 27 points and 10 rebounds in a 64-44 win over UA, holds offers from Dayton, Michigan, Pittsburgh, West Virginia and Xavier. In addition to those schools, he is also interested in Notre Dame and Ohio State. Both programs have yet to send an offer his way.
Should the Buckeyes do so, it appears they have a steep hill to climb to land the No. 81 overall prospect and the 16th-best power forward in the 2018 class. Following the game vs. UA, Hunter was asked if OSU has been involved with his recruitment lately.
“No,” Hunter responded. “(Associate head coach Dave) Dickerson texted me the other day telling me I’m a great guy, wonderful kid. That’s basically all he said.”
It should be noted that Buckeye head coach Thad Matta was in attendance for the game between Pickerington North and UA. In addition to Hunter playing, 2018 OSU commit and UA shooting guard Dane Goodwin was in action as well.
As for other schools pursuing Hunter, Pittsburgh seems to be right in the thick of it. Head coach Kevin Stallings was in attendance for the game Thursday night as well.
“They’ve been really involved,” Hunter (6-7, 195) said of Pittsburgh. “They text me every day asking me how school is going, how life is going, we talk about Pitt. I talk to Coach Stallings all the time, he’s a really good guy.
"(Director of basketball operations) Daniel Cage, he’s a really good guy. Their whole staff, they’re really good people. They’ve been wanting to come to a game but they’ve been in season. So now they came to the game and I hope they liked what they saw.”
Butler and Michigan are also in the race for Hunter.
“I’m hearing a lot from them too,” Hunter said of the Bulldogs and the Wolverines. “Butler just recently got involved but I’m hearing a lot from them now. Michigan has been involved. I hear a lot from them. I talk to them every day. (Michigan head coach John) Beilein texts me every day. (Assistant coach Saddi) Washington texts me every day.
“Coach Beilein is a real nice guy. He’s just really cool, really chill. All I hear is good things about him.”
