It sure appears that it's recruiting business as usual for Urban Meyer and Ohio State, as the Buckeyes currently have the nation's number-nine rated class with only five commits.
With the state of Ohio being the strongest it's been in the past few years, Meyer has targeted several in-state recruits. Linebacker Dallas Gant will be making his choice on May 16, and he is high on the Buckeye recruiting board.
With a final five of Penn State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Michigan State and Ohio State, Gant has great options to continue his career at the next level. Who are the contenders?
Penn State and Michigan seem to be the fourth and fifth options currently, especially the Wolverines who Gant visited this past weekend. While Michigan State was the favorite early on, I'm betting the Spartans have dropped back behind Ohio State and Notre Dame.
That leaves only two schools, and there's no doubting the Fighting Irish have Gant's attention right now. This is a TRUE student-athlete, and education is a priority for Gant and his parents. I could definitely see him at South Bend.
Before Luke Fickell left Ohio State to become the head coach at Cincinnati, my feeling was that this one was over and done and Gant was a Buckeye. Fickell leaving opened the door for everyone else.
Ohio State replaced Fickell with Bill Davis, and Gant has been building a relationship with the new linebackers coach.
"Coach Davis and I have a great relationship, and I talk to him regularly," Gant admitted. "I think he's a great coach and a great guy. He's a great coach to take over for Coach Fickell."
THE PREDICTION: Still six weeks to go obviously, but I'm going with Ohio State as the choice for Gant. I believe the relationship with Coach Davis is strong, and Gant has a high comfort level with Ohio State as the school that can make his dreams come true.
