Ohio State Buckeyes Scrimmage At Student Appreciation Day

The Ohio State football team worked through some 11-on-11 drills during Student Appreciation Day.

The Ohio State football team held its annual Student Appreciation Day practice earlier at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

Hundreds of students, siblings and fans were on hand to watch a portion of practice, meet and greet the players and a few even participated in a fastest student race. That includes one student wearing jeans who turned on the burners during his heat (pretty impressive, I must say).

The portion of practice students, fans and media were able to see was almost exclusively 11-on-11 work, so I'll provide some observations below, including who was running with the ones and the twos.

Injury Update

  • Baron Browning and Malik Harrison were both there in slings. They each had shoulder surgery recently.
  • Davon Hamilton was on crutches. He had surgery on a broken foot this spring.
  • Jonathon Cooper was a full participant. He had been nursing a hamstring injury.
  • Damon Arnette seemed to be rubbing his hamstring at one point while limping, but it didn't look too serious.
  • Demetrius Knox was not on the practice field. There was no word from Ohio State regarding his absence.

Running With The Ones

From what I could tell, there was a pretty clear first team offense working at practice today. That list is as follows:

QB: J.T. Barrett
RB: Mike Weber
LT: Jamarco Jones
LG: Michael Jordan
C: Billy Price
RG: Matt Burrell
RT: Isaiah Prince
TE: A.J. Alexander
H: Parris Campbell
WR: Austin Mack
WR: Terry McLaurin

Other players who rotated in with the first stringers on offense were Luke Farrell, Johnnie Dixon, K.J. Hill and Binjimen Victor (Victor was in an orange jersey). Eric Glover-Williams got work with both the ones and the twos as well.

The situation on defense was a little more fluid, but the starting defensive line seemed to be some combination of Tyquan Lewis, Sam Hubbard, Jalyn Holmes, Dre'Mont Jones, Nick Bosa and Robert Landers. The top linebackers are still Dante Booker, Chris Worley and Jerome Baker. At safety, Damon Webb and Jordan Fuller (who was wearing an orange jersey) were the ones. Denzel Ward and Damon Arnette were the top CBs. Shaun Wade rotated in with the ones for at least a couple reps as well.

Running With The Twos

There was a lot of fluidity with the twos in practice and Joe Burrow and Dwayne Haskins rotated quite a bit. I thought Burrow looked like the better of the two, while Tate Martell looked just as good as Haskins, if not better, in limited action.

Demario McCall, Antonio Williams and J.K. Dobbins all rotated at RB. I thought Williams looked really solid. At receiver, a number of players were in and out, including Brendon White. Farrell and Jake Hausmann were the tight ends rotating with the twos.

Along the offensive line, Gavin Cupp got work at guard and tackle. Brady Taylor was at center with Joshua Alabi at left tackle, Malcolm Pridgeon at right guard and Branden Bowen at right tackle.

On defense, some of the players rotating with the twos were Wade, Malik Barrow, Jeff Okudah (who had a nice interception), Keandre Jones, Isaiah Pryor, Erick Smith, Marcus Williamson, Cooper, Tuf Borland, Jashon Cornell, Rashod Berry and Justin Hilliard.

Standouts

On offense, some guys that that really stood out to me were Brendon White, Joe Burrow, Antonio Williams and Luke Farrell.

On defense, I was most impressed by Isaiah Pryor – he looks like a future star. I thought Williamson showed some good toughness as well.
