The Ohio State men's volleyball team is set for a rematch in the national title game. The No. 1 seed Buckeyes defeated No. 4 Hawaii at St. John Arena in straight sets Thursday night in the national semifinal to advance to its second straight title game against BYU.
The Buckeyes opened the match with a 25-23 set victory in which they never trailed. Driss Guessous led Ohio State in the opening set, tallying four kills and a perfect attacking percentage. As a team, OSU also recorded 5.5 blocks while the Warriors failed to record one.
The second set featured a back and forth affair at the beginning, as the Buckeyes and Warriors started the match by splitting the first 16 points. However, Ohio State outside hitter and the reigning national player of the year Nicolas Szerszen led the Buckeyes on a 7-0 run to build a 15-8 lead. During that span, Szerszen tallied four service aces.
The closest the Warriors would get is within five before Miles Johnson ended the set with a kill to give OSU a 25-18 victory in the set, pushing its lead to 2-0.
The third and final set saw Ohio State jump out to a 10-6 lead, as the home town Buckeyes never trailed in the final set, ending the match with a 25-19 win in the third.
The Buckeyes and Cougars met in last seasons title match, which Ohio State won in straight sets. BYU is coming off of a 3-0 win over Long Beach State in its semifinal matchup. The title match is set for 7 p.m. on May 6 at St. John Arena in Columbus.
