Chat Transcript - Gary Housteau

Gary Housteau joined us for a club chat today to talk about several Ohio recruits, such as RB Raymond Williams, DE Michael Massey, LB Marcus Freeman, and more. We have a transcript posted now.

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 1:03:16 PM)
Hello everyone ... welcome let's talk OSU football and Ohio High School football!

LightningRod (Sep 18, 2003 1:03:43 PM)
What's the deal with Warren Harding? Is the OHSAA investigating yet?

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 1:05:00 PM)
I don't know how to answer that. I've been very active in my investigation of Clarett and Harding football just to be informed and some of my findings are becoming this week as you know...

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 1:05:35 PM)
No investigation that I know of.

Oh8ch (Sep 18, 2003 1:05:42 PM)
If Delbert is the real deal as so many say he is, why are so few major programs willing to chance an offer - hands or no hands?

NEOhio (Sep 18, 2003 1:06:05 PM)
I heard he wasn't even starting.

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 1:06:45 PM)
They are waiting for him to produce this year and I believe he needs to step up in a big way against St. Ed's on Saturday. I'll try to make that game after the OSU contest Saturday

Buckeye98 (Sep 18, 2003 1:06:58 PM)
Gary, with Freeman looking like a lock next week, does this make you feel even more confident about Ginn and Davis? Can you even be more confident?

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 1:07:58 PM)
I've been supremely confident about Freeman, Davis and Ginn for a long time now. It's been a no brainer to me being privy to the information that I am. It's just a matter of time before all three are on board.

NEOhio (Sep 18, 2003 1:07:41 PM)
Any word on Krenzel yet for sure?

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 1:09:07 PM)
About Krenzel, I talked with Steve H. this morning and he thinks Krenzel could indeed be out and why not rest him and give Scott a chance to hone his game skills against a lesser opponent.

TrueNorth (Sep 18, 2003 1:07:54 PM)
Gary, are you aware of any relationship that P. Burgess may have or have had with the caterer who was reported to be the one gifting Maurice Clarett $$$?

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 1:10:17 PM)
I know all about Bobby Delimuti from DeLucia's restaurant and I cannot draw any direct connections to illegal activities at this time. He's just very involved to put it mildly.

ImBack45 (Sep 18, 2003 1:08:10 PM)
Gary, just curious who you think is a must get from the state of Ohio outside of the Big 3 of Freeman, Ginn & Davis?

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 1:11:11 PM)
Raymond Williams...I'm his biggest fan.

TrueNorth (Sep 18, 2003 1:10:31 PM)
That "lesser opponent" leads the number one offense in the country that just beat Purdue

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 1:12:22 PM)
the "lesser opponent" is a lesser opponent no matter who leads what category and what team they beat. And that Purdue juggernaut had their hands full with Wake Forest too.

Buckeye98 (Sep 18, 2003 1:11:02 PM)
Gary, what would you say Freeman's true numbers are (i.e., height, weight, speed etc..) and which LB position does he project best to?

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 1:13:44 PM)
ON Freeman, he's 6-2 1/2 238 pounds. His concensus 40 time is around a 4.45 second forty which is ungodly for a person that size. He's a bitch. Period.

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 1:14:12 PM)
On Freeman as well... outside linebacker would be a good place for him to roam in the OSU defense.

CGBUCK (Sep 18, 2003 1:11:24 PM)
Any word on how McMullen looks in practice?

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 1:15:58 PM)
CGbuck... I'm in Youngstown so I can't get to see him at all, but he's a fifth-year senior and he has to step up...period. I like him as a passer but that's an oxymoron in JT's offense for the most part.

NEOhio (Sep 18, 2003 1:15:43 PM)
I saw Rehring a couple weeks ago at a game -- he was HUGE!

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 1:17:08 PM)
Rehring is actually enormous I agree with your assessment. Him and Braxton are two huge individuals.

TrueNorth (Sep 18, 2003 1:16:11 PM)
Gary, any info on a RB from Akron area (name slips me) who is nearing 10,000

TrueNorth (Sep 18, 2003 1:16:12 PM)
yards rushing for his career?

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 1:18:00 PM)
Sutton???... I haven't seen him play but everyone says he's the bomb. I want to see Hoban and Garfield play later in the year if I can. Sutton versus Chris Wells.

jackmatevans (Sep 18, 2003 1:18:04 PM)
Gary, I know you have never been very high on Braxton and it seems his play this year has not been very inspired. Do you still see the Bucks pursuing him hard and do you think he ends up in Columbus.

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 1:20:13 PM)
Correct I have never been high on Braxton because I've seen him play numerous times. This year he's really disappointed. Big time. I hear interest is waning big-time and although the potential is sure there, I don't know if OSU will continue to pursue him. I hope so because he's local for me, but interest is waning.

ImBack45 (Sep 18, 2003 1:20:22 PM)
gary, thx.!, have you seen Pittman & Haw play and if so how do they compare to Williams?

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 1:23:07 PM)
Unfortunately no on both accounts. I had the Harding Buchtel game circled on my calendar all summer but Pittman didn't play because of turf toe. I talked to Claude Brown just last night and he said Pittman should play against Ellet this week and he should be about 90 percent. I haven't seen Haw play either this year. But I have went to both of their schools to chat with them and get to know both of them. I like both players a lot but Williams is just unfriggin believable. If Pittman and Haw are better than I'm really excited about them. I'll try to see both players before the year ends.

TrueNorth (Sep 18, 2003 1:23:18 PM)
Gary, how strong is the possibility that Williams will need to go the JUCO route ie FT. Union?

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 1:24:43 PM)
It's strong and that's a good thing for OSU if that does happen. Otherwise they might not go after him and he may end up at a Big12 school like Nebraska. If he goes to Fork Union Military Academy, I think OSU will have a good shot at his services.

jackmatevans (Sep 18, 2003 1:25:22 PM)
Gary, I know that Antonio Reynolds from Buchtel is at Hargrave prep school and do you see the bucks having any interest in him this time?

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 1:26:42 PM)
I don't know that they do but he was a highly touted prospect just a few years ago who I believe really like OSU at the time before he committed to Miami. If he's in play, OSU should have an interest. Why not?

Kirk (Sep 18, 2003 1:28:35 PM)
Gary, there's an OL on Harding named Rocco Cironi (sic). I know he's raw, but how has he been progressing?

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 1:30:21 PM)
Rocco is an athletic kid with a big lean frame who has an enormous upside when he fills out. He plays football, basketball and baseball at Harding. He's 6-6 265 pounds or something like that. He likes the Buckeyes a lot. He started all last year at right tackle and he should be a top recruit next season.

Oh8ch (Sep 18, 2003 1:30:42 PM)
Do you see a difference in the type of OL OSU is recruiting now and the seniors we have on the line? Is there hope that a 'new breed' of OL will fit better with JTs offensive approach and solve some of the problems we are experiencing?

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 1:32:58 PM)
If Kirk Barton is the new breed then I'm excited. If Jeff Byers could be added to that line, I'm more excited. It seems they want athletic linemen who can pull but we don't seem to run many sweeps to take advantage of the speed of a guy like Mo Hall. I don't know what direction the line is going in right now.

TrueNorth (Sep 18, 2003 1:33:02 PM)
Gary, do you know if Hoyer was every officially offered by OSU and/or the Weasels up North. If not, any opinion as to why not?

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 1:35:48 PM)
I've communicated with Brian's father on occasion and to the best of my recollection, he told me OSU has never offered. They thought one might come after camp and when it didn't was when they decided to go another direction. Hoyer was second choice at Pitt and Michigan as well but he found a nice home at MSU. I think he's a tremendous talent. I've seen him play this year and he is having a monster senior campaign. He could be the all-time QB at Iggy by the time the year is over. And Massey is awesome as well I might add.

ImBack45 (Sep 18, 2003 1:36:00 PM)
Gary, do the recruits you talk to ever share info on some of the out of state recruits (i.e. the lineman from Missouri) and if so, any interesting tidbits? Speaking of recruits attending the games on a weekly basis.

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 1:38:33 PM)
Recruits are the best sources of information about other recruits. They don't want to tell you their choice but they'll talk about someone else until the cows come home. Other then the communication between Davis, Freeman and Ginn which I know is very prevalent, I don't know of others like them who communicate regularly. Most of the Ohio kids are already in the fold and they don't have any good recruiting stories to tell.

jackmatevans (Sep 18, 2003 1:38:37 PM)
It seems that Mike Massey was waiting on a Michigan offer and now it seems he is waiting on Notre Dame. Do you see the Bucks getting him in the end?

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 1:40:54 PM)
My gut says yes, but I have no first-hand knowledge of that to back that up. Massey is really good folks. I was very impressed with his ability when I saw him play this year. I hope to see him again this year...a couple more times.

Buckaholic (Sep 18, 2003 1:41:05 PM)
Gary, has the running back situation had any affect on wavering recruits (i.e., Charlie Jones?) and secondly, have you heard anything on our chances for Brett Gallimore?

SmellyCat (Sep 18, 2003 1:41:07 PM)
What RB's are we in on and have a shot at at this point?

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 1:43:31 PM)
I don't know much about Charlie Jones' situation so I can't answer that other than to speculate. Duane would know more I'm sure. I don't think there is a big rush right now to nail down another back at this time. Patience is the key with two already in the fold. As far as Gallimore, let's just say Mitchum looks a lot more promising than Gallimore.

BuckeyePavs (Sep 18, 2003 1:43:47 PM)
Gary, I've talked to some individuals that are very close to the Iggy program and both of them said that they felt that Zepp (sp?) was a better QB all around than Hoyer. Do you agree with that statement? Do you see Zepp being the QB of the future for OSU after his transfer to OSU? Also, do you plan on talking with Mario Manningham this year? Do you have a relationship with him being that you are at the games? Do you see Harding going anywhere in the playoffs after their subpar showing against Mooney? Mooney should have won that game....Do you see any other other underclassman from the Warren/Youngstown area that with proper development that OSU should keep an eye on? Thanks Gary....

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 1:50:18 PM)
I think Hoyer's physical skills are actually better than Szep's but Szep had such a presence in that offense. A firery guy on the field. No I don't see Szep as the QB of the future at OSU. I'm getting to know Manningham more and more and I know some of the assistants at Harding who keep me abreast of Manningham's thoughts and feelings. He's pretty special. I think Harding needs to kick it up a notch and if they don't they will get beat against Ed's Saturday, but the pieces are there. As far as any youngsters, there is a lineman from Hubbard that can be a sleeper next year right off the top of my head... I'm sure there are some others as well. I hope I answered all of the questions there.

waywardbuckeye (Sep 18, 2003 1:50:22 PM)
It's still about offensive linemen, we have gone after tight ends that have size and can run and made tackles out of them. Going way back to Doug France, is there anyone out there like that we are pursuing?

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 1:53:42 PM)
It looks like Hoobler will be the only TE in this year's group and I don't see him or Irizarry or even Marcel Frost being a lineman in near future... I don't know if there is anyone else they might consider to convert but R.J. Coleman could prove to be a nice player on the line down the road. I'm hoping to see Hoobler this Friday if the weather permits.

mcorf (Sep 18, 2003 1:53:46 PM)
Gary, just got here but wanted to know if we'll see more of Louis this week? I'm sure he was happy to see the TE's more involved last week, and happy he didn't go to Miami especially with Greg Olson transferring there.

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 1:56:08 PM)
I tend to think not and I wish they would have just redshirted him other than having him play in a handful of plays thus far this year. Sure he's happy to be a Buckeye but Louis played as a freshman at Ursuline and he's not used to watching on the sidelines so it's an adjustment for him to make no doubt.

Kirk (Sep 18, 2003 1:56:18 PM)
Ok, time's just about up. Any last questions for Gary?

waywardbuckeye (Sep 18, 2003 1:56:43 PM)
Outside of Fred Davis, anyone from Northwest Ohio on the radar as a recruit?

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 1:57:21 PM)
No????

Kirk (Sep 18, 2003 1:58:22 PM)
There are a couple of solid players from the Toledo area that I am thinking of, but they look like MAC guys right now that I know of.

mcorf (Sep 18, 2003 1:58:25 PM)
Is Freeman going to have A.J. Hawk impact?

mcorf (Sep 18, 2003 1:59:55 PM)
Also, will he and Kerr push D'andrea to DE?

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 1:59:57 PM)
Maybe not the first year or two, but he will have at least two solid years at OSU or more. That's how good our linebacking corps is and he will likely be behind A.J. Hawk. But who knows, he might be that good.

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 2:01:47 PM)
I hope Kerr, D'Andrea and Schlegal all get to battle for the Mike spot and may the best man win. I think Freeman will be dynamic on the outside at linebacker. Big, fast and strong.

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 2:01:51 PM)
My tentative schdule this weekend is Glenville Friday afternoon, Carrollton Friday night, OSU Saturday in the day and Harding at St. Ed's at night on Saturday. I hope the weather cooperates. I'll have updates all next week.

Kirk (Sep 18, 2003 2:02:37 PM)
Thanks Gary for stopping by... looking forward to the updates and what you think of Chad Hoobler and Alex Boone. Thanks everyone and see you tomorrow for Steve's chat!

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 2:03:08 PM)
Thank you all for participating...Go Bucks...

Garyhousteau (Sep 18, 2003 2:03:23 PM)
Smile!
