GaryHousteau (Sep 25, 2003 1:05:39 PM)
I'll try to field any away!

Kirk (Sep 25, 2003 1:06:43 PM)
Hi Gary, thanks for joining us today.

dragonknight (Sep 25, 2003 1:06:46 PM)
Out of OSU's current commitments, who are you most excited about?

GaryHousteau (Sep 25, 2003 1:07:51 PM)
Marcus Freeman...absolute stud!

dominus (Sep 25, 2003 1:07:53 PM)
I was actually wondering if you have any idea what is the timeframe for the NCAA finalizing the duration of the suspension of Maurice Clarett.

GaryHousteau (Sep 25, 2003 1:09:32 PM)
I know this sounds like I'm dodging the question, but none of that should matter because Clarett should go to school today and the rest of the year, do what he needs to do to get back in the graces of his team (if that's possible) and be ready to suit up for OSU next year. I don't know what the NCAA is up to at all!

Mike68 (Sep 25, 2003 1:09:36 PM)
Gary- Will you be going to see Nick Smith anytime soon?

GaryHousteau (Sep 25, 2003 1:10:44 PM)
I might have to go see a nice Federal League game soon and I'll have to consider seeing I'll try.

BaltimoreBuck (Sep 25, 2003 1:10:55 PM)
You've been following Tressel for years, will he ever change is offensive philosophy, open up the running game a little with sweeps, reverses, off tackle runs, or will he always try to run between the tackles?

GaryHousteau (Sep 25, 2003 1:12:32 PM)
No! Never! What you see is what you always will get. Without a running game, he is in deep do-do. He'll never change. That's just the way he coaches.

Kirk (Sep 25, 2003 1:13:32 PM)
Gary, other than Mario Manningham, what underclassmen that you've seen stick out in your mind as being impressive?

GaryHousteau (Sep 25, 2003 1:16:32 PM)
I love Tyrell Sutton from talking to some coaches in the area. I really want to see if this kid is deserving of the big time offer next year. I haven't seen him play though. I saw Alex Boone last week and wasn't impressed a great deal. O'Neal will be a difference maker with G-ville when he becomes eligible. Javon Ringer is very impressive, I saw him in person. Freddie Lenix is like Ray Lewis at middle linebacker. But Manningham is spectacular no doubt.

hondo (Sep 25, 2003 1:16:47 PM)
Gary who is the best running back in state right now and is there any way Delbert gets an offer from Ohio State?

GaryHousteau (Sep 25, 2003 1:19:07 PM)
Ray Williams is the best in my eyes as a pure, instinctive, smooth, gliding running back. I give props to Pittman and Haw obviously but Williams is a genetically born running back. No I don't think Delbert will get an OSU offer but if he did, he would be a Buckeye no doubt. I know Delbert very well. I'm going to see Harding play Delbert's old team, Braxton's current team, Ursuline this Friday.

BuckeyePavs (Sep 25, 2003 1:19:20 PM)
Gary, a couple of questions. Seeing Brady Quinn's early playing time at Notre Dame, do you think we missed out on one here? Were you more impressed with Zwick, Hoyer, or Quinn in high school? Who do you see being the QB of the future? If you had to give percentage odds at which way Manningham is leaning this early in the stage what would it be? Can your opinion on percentage odds on landing Massey? Who was better in this stage of high school, him or his brother Pat? Thanks in advance for answering all of my questions....

GaryHousteau (Sep 25, 2003 1:25:03 PM)
I've always been a big Brady Quinn and Ben Mauk fan. Quinn has stardom written all over him, but he was destined it seemed to go to ND. I really like Hoyer this year. I'm going to try to see him again Saturday night against Massillon after OSU game. I liked Zwick a lot at Massillon and I think he will be a tremendous QB at OSU. I like Troy Smith as well, but I think Zwick could really be the QB of the future. Manningham has told me 50-50 with OSU and the school up north. I know his assistant coaches well and I'm in tune with his situation. I take him at his 50-50 word right now. As you may all know I'm not big into issuing percentages but if you push me on my Massey, my gut says 75% OSU. No factual basis for that. I'll try to interview him Saturday after the game. I think he's tremendous in the same mold as Simon Fraser, maybe quicker even. I think he's the better overall athlete than his brother. How did I do?

wells20 (Sep 25, 2003 1:25:13 PM)
Gary, What will it take for this recruiting class to come out as a top five class. Any sleepers at QB we could get?

GaryHousteau (Sep 25, 2003 1:27:01 PM)
Give me Ginn and Davis, which both are ironclad locks I might add, throw in Massey and then Mitchum and I don't care where we're rated. That's a solid enough foundation. All the rest is gravy.

GaryHousteau (Sep 25, 2003 1:27:03 PM)
Add Byers to that sorry. A wonderful pickup he would be. He's in my must get list.

bucknut13 (Sep 25, 2003 1:27:11 PM)
Gary have you seen Chris Wells and if so what are your impressions? If you have seen him, I know it is way early, but do you see an offer imminent?

GaryHousteau (Sep 25, 2003 1:29:20 PM)
I've seen him in person but not on the gridiron. He looks to be built like a solid Mack Truck as a sophomore. Rick Shepas pretty much raved about him and he coached against him this year. I'd really like to see Buchtel and Garfield later in the year. I see an OSU offer very imminent.

mcorf (Sep 25, 2003 1:29:26 PM)
Gary, I asked this on the message board and don't know if you saw it, but how does Marcus Freeman compare with Prescott Burgess? Thanks.

GaryHousteau (Sep 25, 2003 1:31:49 PM)
Both instinctive players in that aspect. But you can't compare 6-2 240 with 4.5 speed with anyone. Freeman's tools are down right illegal. Burgess was a sure tackler at safety and a ball hawk, but I'll have to see how he pans out at linebacker if that's indeed where he plays for Michigan. Freeman is a Hawk with muscles.

GaryHousteau (Sep 25, 2003 1:31:52 PM)
More muscles...

dragonknight (Sep 25, 2003 1:31:56 PM)
Any thoughts on the NW game this weekend?

GaryHousteau (Sep 25, 2003 1:33:59 PM) Will Allen alluded to...a spanking in the Horseshoe

mcorf (Sep 25, 2003 1:34:05 PM)
I heard that Incarnato might not be sold on ND. Any truth to that and do you think we offer?Any other OL from Ohio that look like they will become Bucks?

GaryHousteau (Sep 25, 2003 1:36:57 PM)
I'll yield to DL on Incarnato...he has never came across my radar screen I have to admit although he was one of the linemen with Cadogan that I was looking at early on. I'll wait on Byers and Mitchum and go from there. I've never been sold on Brandon Braxton but I guess you still give him a chance. I'm anxious to watch him play Friday night. I need to see marked improvement from him. I'd like to see him become a Buckeye but he hasn't earned it yet. That's been my stance on Braxton for the longest time.

mcorf (Sep 25, 2003 1:37:16 PM)
I'm surprised Donte Whitner and Louis Irizarry aren't getting more reps for as high as they were rated coming out. How do Ginn and Hoobler compare to these two?

GaryHousteau (Sep 25, 2003 1:41:16 PM)
Ginn is really speacial. A cover corner and a supreme kick returner. He's got it all. The best I've seen coming out of that position and with his offensive skills combined, he may be the best I've ever seen period. No offense to Whitner who I think highly of as well. It's time for one of these Glenville kids to step up soon. Hoobler really impressed me last Friday night. I like him as a tight end because he block tremendously. Irizarry is a better pass catcher and speed guy but Hoobler can block and yes he can ball on defense as well.

worthabuck (Sep 25, 2003 1:41:25 PM)
Any word or idea how Datish is progressing on the OL?

GaryHousteau (Sep 25, 2003 1:43:33 PM)
Datish is working at center now, the position he began his high school career at. Datish is a local guy for me and although I never rated him high coming out of high school despite all the honors he garnered, I do wish him the best still. He can play anywhere on the O-line which has to be a benefit for him down the road sometime.

BuckeyeDave (Sep 25, 2003 1:43:39 PM)
I see the Bucks got Marcus Freeman. With Hawk, Schlegel and the rest, OSU should have one of the top, if not the premier LB corps in the country.

GaryHousteau (Sep 25, 2003 1:46:55 PM)
No question. I love Hawk, D'Andrea and Carpenter. All Studs. I love Kerr another stud. I'd take those four and be the happiest guy on the planet. So throw in Schlegel and now Freeman, and I'm doing cartwheels as we speak. Awesome unit. The unit I/We get to see for the next few years.

dragonknight (Sep 25, 2003 1:45:24 PM)
Anything new on any of the big out of state guys that are high on OSU? (Byers, Mitchum, Barrett, Hart, Gallimore, Xavier Lee, etc.)

GaryHousteau (Sep 25, 2003 1:47:40 PM)
Sorry I don't have enough time to follow all of the instate guys let alone out of state guys. DL can answer anything in that aspect and more I'm sure. I do have a good feeling about Michum and maybe even Byers though. We'll see.

Buckster (Sep 25, 2003 1:47:50 PM)
Gary, regarding Hoyer, do you know what schools extended a scholarship to him?

GaryHousteau (Sep 25, 2003 1:49:29 PM)
I know he was second choice at Pitt and at Michigan at one point but he never got the offer from either I believe. I'm not sure of others but I'll ask him or his dad this weekend.

mcorf (Sep 25, 2003 1:49:40 PM)
You are one of the few people that are that high on Zwick. I saw him a few times as a senior and can't say he really stood out. Why do you think he will be special?

GaryHousteau (Sep 25, 2003 1:53:45 PM)
Between the ears mainly. I refer to him as a Krenzel with quarterbacking skills. He's just like Krenzel but he is way more of a threat to throw the football. I'm not discounting Troy Smith in any way, he's the better athlete and JT has been successful at YSU with guys like Troy Smith, he won a national title with Ray Isaac and Demond Tidwell who were similar players, but Smith is way better than either of those guys. It could be a divisive issue next year on the team. I hope it won't be.

BuckeyeDave (Sep 25, 2003 1:53:56 PM)
Who's the next primetime RB the Bucks are recruiting?

GaryHousteau (Sep 25, 2003 1:56:02 PM)
Chris Wells from Akron Garfield. Just a sophomore. Again, I think Ray Williams is primetime as well.

mcorf (Sep 25, 2003 1:56:15 PM)
As far as D'Andrea goes, do you think he stays in the middle next year? No doubt he has tons of physical talent but just doesn't seem to be that instinctual. Can you comment?

GaryHousteau (Sep 25, 2003 1:58:22 PM)
He will be challenged by Kerr I guarantee that. I think D'Andrea will continue to get better and better and he will need to be on the field. I honestly don't know how all that will play out but I'm going to enjoy watching it. Again, I think Kerr has the best instincts of all the linebackers with the possible exception of A.J. Hawk.

dragonknight (Sep 25, 2003 1:58:31 PM)
Are you worried about the future of the OL? We were suppose to have an absolutely dominating group this year, and they're average at best. Do you think it's a coaching issue, or is it just this group of seniors?

GaryHousteau (Sep 25, 2003 1:59:59 PM)
I just think you can't block eight guys with 6 lineman and that's all you need to do against JT's offense. Only Reecie is good enough to run through that kind of congestion.

Buck87 (Sep 25, 2003 2:00:15 PM)
Why are they working Datish at center? Are they planning on moving Mangold? Or has he just been unable to do the job any place else? That does not seem like a good sign.

GaryHousteau (Sep 25, 2003 2:01:50 PM)
That's just where he has gravitated to it has nothing to do with Mangold. Datish can play any of the three positions which is good. He could be a valuable backup down the road.

BaltimoreBuck (Sep 25, 2003 2:03:38 PM)
Who would you rate as the best OL coming out of Ohio in the last 3 years. Consensus speaking Datish and Braxton have been rated highest but seem to lack the mean streak it takes to go to the next level, your opinion?

GaryHousteau (Sep 25, 2003 2:07:55 PM)
Both Datish and Braxton are local guys for me and I am one of the few who were never really high on neither, unfortunately. That's hard for me to say because I genuinely like both guys a lot. I just think both were rated so, so high in high school and I never understood why. They're not bad, just not premier. There hasn't been a dominating high school lineman in Ohio in quite some time. Neither Sims nor Mangold weren't that highly touted in high school either.

Kirk (Sep 25, 2003 2:07:58 PM)
I know I said three more posts, but since these next three are all on the same topic, I'm going to lump them all together and then we'll let Gary go...

wells20 (Sep 25, 2003 2:08:03 PM)
Gary, Has OSU or will OSU offer Williams and do you think he will come here with Haw and Pittman already in this class? Thanks, Mike in Indy

SmellyCat (Sep 25, 2003 2:08:06 PM)
Sorry if this was asked but anything new on potential RB recruits?

BuckeyeDave (Sep 25, 2003 2:08:07 PM)
If Clarett, Ross and Hall all go pro after this year, who will play RB for the Bucks next year? Will Ross go pro after thi syear? How 'bout Hall?

GaryHousteau (Sep 25, 2003 2:11:07 PM)
I think OSU will not offer Williams unless he goes the Fork Union route. He would love to stay close to home and play for the Buckeyes. I hope his academics can match his football skills and I'm holding out hope he becomes a Buckeye in this class but I doubt it. He would come regardless who else OSU has recruited at that position. He believes in his own ability.

GaryHousteau (Sep 25, 2003 2:11:50 PM)
Hall or Ross are not going anywhere next year.

Kirk (Sep 25, 2003 2:12:32 PM)
Ok thanks to Gary for stopping by... I can hang out for a few more minutes and chat if anyone wanted to ask any more questions. Thanks everyone for chatting today!

GaryHousteau (Sep 25, 2003 2:12:38 PM)
Thanks for your time everybody. Hope to see you at a game somewhere. If you know me say hello to me. Thanks again! Go Bucks!
