garyhousteau (Oct 2, 2003 10:02:15 AM)
hello away...

SmellyCat (Oct 2, 2003 10:03:17 AM)
Is Richard Davis worthy of an offer if Delbert is not?

garyhousteau (Oct 2, 2003 10:05:09 AM)
I don't think he'll get any Big Ten offer, maybe a Pitt or West Virginia. Pitt took Mike Phillips last year and Mike was at the game Friday night so I'm sure he gave their coaches a good scouting report. Davis is catlike quick, great speed but I don't know if he's built to take a pounding. I like him more and more every game I see him. And he can catch the football.

ToledoBucknut (Oct 2, 2003 10:05:12 AM)
Gary... just wanted to express my gratitude for everything you do to help us Bucknuts quench our insatiable thirst for Buckeye Football! You've been another great addition to the "Bucknuts" team! Thanks again!

garyhousteau (Oct 2, 2003 10:06:02 AM)
Thanks toldedo I appreciate your kind words.

buckman (Oct 2, 2003 10:06:05 AM)
Gary, seems like the big 3 are from Ohio are coming to OSU...but I'm worried about Massey. What do you think OSU's chances are with this kid?

garyhousteau (Oct 2, 2003 10:08:25 AM)
I've been poking around that issue indirectly through a couple of different sources, but I keep missing Massey at the end of the game so again I haven't had any quality time speaking to him. I understand he's really fond of his brother, so Michigan looks good in that aspect, but I hear also that he really likes Ohio State as well. I have no intimate information to give at this time but I am working on it. My gut says OSU in the end. Strictly a guess not factually based though.

nat'l champs (Oct 2, 2003 10:08:35 AM)
Do you expect to see more of Gamble on offense now that the weather has cooled and we are now in conference games?

garyhousteau (Oct 2, 2003 10:10:33 AM)
Boy I sure hope so. I expect Jim Tressel to underachieve on offense, I've seen him do it for so many years. But with this array of skilled players at his disposal, I'm as clueless as the offense seems to be. Give Gamble some touches...anything.

Craig Krenzel Is My Dad (Oct 2, 2003 10:10:55 AM)
Any word on how Krenzel is doing?

garyhousteau (Oct 2, 2003 10:11:52 AM)
I defer to Steve and the guys closer to Columbus than I am on that question...sorry! Don't want to speculate from Youngstown.

mcorf (Oct 2, 2003 10:12:04 AM)
Gary, how are Freeman's instincts at LB? What position do you see him excelling at?

garyhousteau (Oct 2, 2003 10:14:27 AM)
I've only seen him on tape so I don't have a full appreciation of his ability yet, but it's uncanny the way he goes forward so well on run plays. He really could play the Mike at OSU but they're so stacked there literally. I see him backing up A.J. Hawk and being the same type of player as him. Bigger and stronger and faster but not quite the superior instincts of Hawk. We are really blessed to get to watch A.J. Hawk play football, IMHO.

ToledoBucknut (Oct 2, 2003 10:15:06 AM)
I keep hearing more and more about Ginn, Jr. possibly being a WR here at tOSU, rather than his national prospect position of CB. If we indeed want him on the offensive side of the ball, how would you compare his WR skills to Fred Davis of Toledo Rogers?

garyhousteau (Oct 2, 2003 10:19:15 AM)
First of all Ted Ginn, Jr. will be a star at whatever position he plays, period. He's Deion Sanders like but he's more physical. This kid is the real deal with a capital R and D. I love his tenacity at cornerback and he has great, superb, coverage skills. The things he can do with the football on offense in open space are downright incredible. He's the biggest all-around individual talent I've had the privilege of seeing play thus far. I think he will start his career at DB and then add offense and returns to his game as a Buckeye. Fred Davis on the other hand is a different animal. He might be a bigger Ted Ginn. His upside is very scary as well. I need to get to see him play in these last four weeks. Both guys are tremendous talents, Ginn is Ginn!

mcorf (Oct 2, 2003 10:19:27 AM)
With E.J. being out indefinitely, does Whitner possibly move to corner?

garyhousteau (Oct 2, 2003 10:21:56 AM)
I don't think so. But now that he's healthy I guess anything is possible with him. He'll likely remain at safety and be used as the main nickle back. I thought Youboty showed well enough at corner in the spring to be used there when called upon.

BaltimoreBuck (Oct 2, 2003 10:22:03 AM)
Michigan plays a 3-4 Defense as compared to tOSU 4-3, does that help, hurt or makes no difference in recruiting Massey or any other true DE?

garyhousteau (Oct 2, 2003 10:24:17 AM)
I think Ohio State gets the edge with Massey there. He is a pure outside rusher guy who can recognize the run quickly and play it well. He looks to be very fundamental on defense and he's as quick as a cat and very aggressive and very dominating. I don't think he constantly wants an OLB on his shoulder every play.

Guest (Oct 2, 2003 10:24:24 AM)
How many offensive lineman do you think we take in this class? Say Byers, Gallimore, Claude, Braxton, and maybe a guy like Hart all decide they want to come to OSU, do you turn any of them away to use the spot/spots for other positions?

Guest (Oct 2, 2003 10:24:43 AM)
Are there any real sleepers that have been having a tremendous senior season that may get looks late in the recruiting process if room allows?

mcorf (Oct 2, 2003 10:24:50 AM)
Do you see McMullen getting into the game if the Bucks fall over 1 TD behind?

garyhousteau (Oct 2, 2003 10:26:22 AM)
I confess that I don't know anything about the quarterback situation for the Wisconsin game. I tend to think that we will see Troy Smith in every game from this point on at some position and even Justin Zwick getting some snaps now and then. We may see all four in the Wisconsin game. I don't know.

nat'l champs (Oct 2, 2003 10:26:31 AM)
Did Coach Tressel ever have an offensive coordinator at YSU?

garyhousteau (Oct 2, 2003 10:27:54 AM)
Yes. In name only. Just like he does now.

ToledoBucknut (Oct 2, 2003 10:28:03 AM)
And in reference to Ginn, Jr. and Fred Davis... where would you put Mario Manningham (in comparison)?

garyhousteau (Oct 2, 2003 10:30:52 AM)
Wow...another huge talent. Manningham has a pure nose for the endzone as a receiver. He can make people miss at full speed in a similar way that Ginn does. He's really good and he's only going to get better in time. He's not too bad at cornerback on defense this year. Talk to me next year about Manningham but he's a really good one also.

mcorf (Oct 2, 2003 10:31:11 AM)
Why not put Bam at TB? He has to be better than Hall!

garyhousteau (Oct 2, 2003 10:34:12 AM)
At this point, why not? Although I think I like Guilford a whole lot. I think Bam would be more of a one play or two play change up if you did put him in at running back, but we all might be surprised if he could slip slide away from would-be tacklers. I think he needs open space to do his best work and that's more like to come as a receiver not a running back.

mcorf (Oct 2, 2003 10:34:20 AM)
Any top QB's leaning towards tOSU for the 2005 class?

garyhousteau (Oct 2, 2003 10:36:40 AM)
The main ones that I've focus on this year are Hoyer, Clark and Engram. No other QB has flashed across my radar screen in the games that I've been to this year. Jamario O'Neal might end up being one of the top QB's for Glenville next year.

SmellyCat (Oct 2, 2003 10:36:56 AM)
Any feedback on how Troy Smith feels about how it looks like JT might use him? That slash kind of a role vs. starting QB. I know it's too early to say for sure but Zwick is obviously more of a Tressel conservative and safe choice.

garyhousteau (Oct 2, 2003 10:40:57 AM)
If you hold Troy Smith to his word when he was being recruited, he said time and again that Ohio State was bigger than any one individual and if he didn't beat Zwick out he would do his best to catch passes or any other thing to contribute to the team. I think he will be given an equal shot to win the QB battle next year but it will come down to the fact that both guys need to be on the field so Smith will in effect be used as slash next year. I don't know Smith's true feelings about being "slash" at this point but if it helps him to be productive, than he has to be happy. I'm sure he would like to be the starting QB next year as does Zwick.

mcorf (Oct 2, 2003 10:41:42 AM)
I read that Hiley is at S and Gonzalez at WR Does that surprise you at all?.

garyhousteau (Oct 2, 2003 10:44:14 AM)
Very much so. I am on record as stating that Tony Gonzalez will be a terrific cover cornerback and I think that Hiley was such a playmaker with the ball in high school that he should be over there. Right now, I'm big time wrong on both accounts but I will still stick with my feelings from watching them play in high school. I really think Gonzalez's true value is on defense, IMHO.

mcorf (Oct 2, 2003 10:44:32 AM)
Where do you see J. O'Neil and S. Lane playing?

garyhousteau (Oct 2, 2003 10:49:02 AM)
I'm anxious to see O'Neil play and I'm hoping it's tomorrow but I haven't heard from my Glenville people yet. I think this kid could become one of the top defensive players we've seen at Ohio State in some time. He's so big and fast and young, it's scary. He can play anywhere, literally. I think he might end up at safety and receiver for the first. Shaun Lane is a true running back, although undersized for the Big Ten. He's a tenacious player on defense and has great speed so I think he can be effective on that side of the ball as well. And he should be great on return teams. So I think both O'Neal and Lane will start their Buckeye careers on defense.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 2, 2003 10:49:05 AM)
Gary, late arriving, I just finished my Buckeye Grove column. Obviously, I can't read what's been discussed. I have tried OHSAA to see if they've ruled on O'Neal. Anything from your end on that (great story on Freeman for Bucknuts The Magazine, by the way)?

garyhousteau (Oct 2, 2003 10:51:43 AM)
I haven't gotten a call yet from my Glenville peeps but I will know his status later this afternoon. My tentative game plan for Friday is to check out Glenville at 3 o'clock and then go see Terrell Sutton and Hoban host Youngstown Ursuline at night. So I will try to find out if O'Neal is going to play tomorrow or if they know yet.

Craig Krenzel Is My Dad (Oct 2, 2003 10:51:55 AM)
I;d like to see some flea flickers or some halfback passes with Troy Smith, its sounds untressel like, but the guy could open up the running game as a RB since he could toy peopple into thinking hes throwing. Just an idea...

garyhousteau (Oct 2, 2003 10:54:28 AM)
Tressel has two weeks to incorporate at least on or even two of his well-practiced gadget plays into the game plan. Now they tend to come early, like on the first play of the game so don't take a potty break early in either half because you might miss it. Then it's back to the regular and same old game plan. Folks, it doesn't ever change. Just win Ugly baby!

Craig Krenzel Is My Dad (Oct 2, 2003 10:54:52 AM)
Tedd Ginn sounds like another chris gamble, you can never have to many of those. =oD

garyhousteau (Oct 2, 2003 10:55:54 AM)

BuckeyeDave (Oct 2, 2003 10:58:04 AM)
Is Shaun Lane any relation to Garcia? Perhaps named for Shaun Gayle?

garyhousteau (Oct 2, 2003 10:59:03 AM)
Garcia is his papa, yes, and I will have to ask him if Shaun Gayle is whom he named after.

BuckeyeDave (Oct 2, 2003 10:58:58 AM)
I'd like to see some Option Runs or Option Passing from Smith. How 'bout that?

garyhousteau (Oct 2, 2003 11:00:04 AM)
Sounds good, but remember the plays always roll off of Jim Tressel's tongue before they get to the huddle... so don't go thinking too crazy...

BuckeyeDave (Oct 2, 2003 11:00:17 AM)
A second generation Buckeye. Garcia Lane was a good one.

garyhousteau (Oct 2, 2003 11:00:32 AM)
Indeed he was.

BuckeyeDave (Oct 2, 2003 11:01:25 AM)
Does Archie Griffin have any kids coming our way? What relation is that young Schlicter kid to Art?

garyhousteau (Oct 2, 2003 11:01:27 AM)
I will do that Steve and everyone enjoy a high school football game or two this weekend. I sure will. Go Bucks!

garyhousteau (Oct 2, 2003 11:02:08 AM)
Griffin I don't know and I belieive Miles is Art's nephew....

Kirk (Oct 2, 2003 11:02:35 AM)
Thanks everyone... stop back for Steve's chat too (keep posted for details)!

BuckeyeDave (Oct 2, 2003 11:02:47 AM)

garyhousteau (Oct 2, 2003 11:03:10 AM)
Thank you all! Smile!

SteveHelwagen (Oct 2, 2003 11:09:31 AM)
