Recruiting Update - Gary Russell

What's the latest on this standout Columbus-area RB? Duane Long caught up with him to catch up.

There's been a lot of talk about running backs in the state of Ohio this year, but one who is as good as any of them who might not get as much publicity is Columbus Walnut Ridge's Gary Russell. Russell has gotten bigger since we last talked to him.

"Actually I've grown a little bit," he said. "I'm 6-0, 190."

How is recruiting going for Gary?

"Pretty good," he said. "Ohio U and Kent have said they are going to offer. Minnesota, Indiana and Oregon are sending a lot of mail. As a matter of fact, Indiana just called."

Gary and Walnut Ridge are off to a good start this year.

"We're playing pretty well," he said. "I'm fifth in the area in rushing which is pretty good considering how we only have thirty varsity players."

Gary plays in the same conference as Columbus Independence, which is the team of Ohio State commitment Erik Haw. The two teams meet in week ten... have the two players discussed it at all?

"No, but friends have been talking back and forth between the two of us," Russell said.  "We're talking a little smack.  We'll see in week ten.

"As it stands right now, we're both in the playoffs, so that could be a big game.  Bigger than me versus Haw."

Gary is still working on getting his test scores ready to go, and he has gotten some impressive help.

"My counselor said they lost my test score," he said. "I'm taking it again later this month; I think it's the 20th. I'm working with a tutor now; he's a (Columbus) West graduate who went to MIT."
