SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:05:09 PM)
Hello everybody!! Great day to be alive with one more amazing Big Ten showdown just a few hours away and a complete day of college football (and really it begins tonight with UM-UM) staring us in the face.

Dr Buckeye (Oct 10, 2003 1:05:34 PM)
Steve, Kirk:

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:05:41 PM)
Hi Steve, Hi Kirk

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:05:42 PM)
Dr. Buckeye:

Dr Buckeye (Oct 10, 2003 1:05:54 PM)
Any predictions for this weekend's OSU running game?

computerbuck (Oct 10, 2003 1:06:26 PM)
will Simon Fraser be allowed to be constantly held again this week?

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:07:06 PM)
Steve, what's your gut telling you about the game tomorrow? Dogfight to the final tick or do we win with ease..or heaven forbid..l....lo..los...lose....?Man. That was tough to spell.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:08:13 PM)
Dr. Buckeye, I think Ohio State will do reasonably well in the running game. If they can just get 125-150 yards (is that asking too much?), that should help open up the passing game a little bit. Stepanovich and Joe should help that endeavor.

Scoots64 (Oct 10, 2003 1:08:45 PM)
Howdy All

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:08:54 PM)
computerbuck, you hope not. But Michigan found out last week when you go on the road in the Big Ten you aren't going to get many favors from the zebras. That means you have to play that much better.

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:09:07 PM)
Do you think Craig will be rusty or will he step in without missing a beat?

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:09:32 PM)
Have you seen any practices this week?

DCBuck (Oct 10, 2003 1:09:56 PM)
Do you really think we should keep Gamble returning punts? He hasn't done much there this year in terms of production..

Scoots64 (Oct 10, 2003 1:09:59 PM)
Steve -- do you have anything new on Hairston, Horford, others or the hoops program in general??????????????????/

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:09:59 PM)
Susan, dogfight to the final tick (what, my dog has ticks?). Wisconsin is pretty good. But I see Ohio State doing just enough to win (but not enough to quiet the many critics who are picking UW). Going to be a great game. I said 19-17 OSU, Nugent wins it.

Dr Buckeye (Oct 10, 2003 1:11:16 PM)
You know guys...Wisconsin has yet to play a ranked team...

InTresselITrust (Oct 10, 2003 1:11:16 PM)
Steve, what is the status of Darion Scott? We need him healthy to stop that Badger ground game.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:11:46 PM)
Susan, it would be a lot to expect Craig to be on top of his game after not playing for 4 weeks. It would not surprise me to see McMullen for a series of 2 if the situation is right. Let's face it, as good as Craig has been he was not exactly the most accurate passer on the planet when he was fully healthy. I'm not saying I expect him to stink it up, but I don't see him going 25 of 30 for 250 yards and 3 touches.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:12:10 PM)
Susan, reporters watch 30 minutes of the Tuesday practice and that's it.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:12:53 PM)
DCBuck, yes, I believe Gamble is the best they have. Poor production is better than devastating fumbles, right? Remember the JT mantra: The punt is the most important play in football.

computerbuck (Oct 10, 2003 1:13:16 PM)
where is R. Parker?

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:13:38 PM)
Doc....the record of wisconsins opponents total 9 wins and 33 losses with their only foe sporting a winning record being unlv...wisky's one loss

Scoots64 (Oct 10, 2003 1:13:48 PM)
Steve -- Do you expect the running game to be improved with Alex S. & Brondon Joe both back???

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:15:08 PM)
Scoots64, I stopped by the coaches office this week, but nobody was in. I understand Horford is back on the table and I saw a post on a board from somebody that Hairston's chances of coming here were lessening, but I don't know where that's from or if it's valid. Photo day is Thursday and I hope to see J.J. Sullinger between now and then for a project I'm working on. Redd was interviewed last night after the exhibition and says he expects a great year, for whatever that's worth. He played pickup games with them quite a bit.

computerbuck (Oct 10, 2003 1:15:50 PM)
Are we ever going to offer N. Smith and Incarnato a scolley?

Dr Buckeye (Oct 10, 2003 1:17:24 PM)
Did you guys see that Herbie picked us to loose on ESPN.com? Can you believe that!

BuckeyeDave (Oct 10, 2003 1:17:46 PM)
My game prediction: If its close, Buckeyes win, if not, Badgres win.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:17:59 PM)
Dr. Buckeye, that may be true, I guess. But they beat WVU, who just took Miami down to the last play. Akron is in the MAC. UNLV is 4-1. But North Carolina and Illinois are terrible and PSU is only a half step from terrible. I don't know what the SOS rankings say, but OSU's sked (as it turns out now with Washington and N.C. State falling by the wayside) probably isn't that much better.

Skilly McRailnob (Oct 10, 2003 1:18:04 PM)
do you expect kirk to pick the bucks every game?

Dr Buckeye (Oct 10, 2003 1:18:16 PM)

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:18:24 PM)
Don't panic. Herbie has picked against OSU before and the Buckeyes still won

edbuck51 (Oct 10, 2003 1:18:38 PM)
It's funny that us and Miami are kinda underdogs this week. I'll bet the cream rises to the top.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:18:44 PM)
InTresselTrust, Will Smith said yesterday he expects Scott to play. I take that to mean he will be in there about half the time and only make 2 huge game-changing plays instead of his normal 4 (darn).

Dr Buckeye (Oct 10, 2003 1:18:56 PM)
His boss probably held him at gunpoint...

BuckeyeDave (Oct 10, 2003 1:19:00 PM)
Dr. Buckeye - Kirk is quietly gaining much respect as a college football analyst. He doesn't get that by being a homer!

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:19:04 PM)
Steve..wisky's opponents..9-33...osu opponents...15-13

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:19:23 PM)
computerbuck, not sure what happened to Roshawn. Oh, yeah, he fumbled his first carry and they gave up on him, apparently for good.

computerbuck (Oct 10, 2003 1:19:24 PM)
Our DLINE is the best in the country ... only Holdings and muggings can slow

computerbuck (Oct 10, 2003 1:20:10 PM)
and Ross and Hall have not fumbled?

Dr Buckeye (Oct 10, 2003 1:20:11 PM)
Steve, Kirk and all:

edbuck51 (Oct 10, 2003 1:20:22 PM)
I think wisky's opponents are 11 - 22

Dr Buckeye (Oct 10, 2003 1:20:27 PM)
Do you think we'll see changes at TB? Smith in?

InTresselITrust (Oct 10, 2003 1:21:05 PM)
Steve, Do you think Krenzel is having as good a year this year as last, prior to his injury? It seems to me, he may be pressing a bit or maybe even auditioning for the NFL. He seems to force more balls this year and his decision-making isn't quite as good (my opinion).

NEOhio (Oct 10, 2003 1:21:11 PM)
I agree computerbuck -- seems to me if that's the theory, our QB has thrown a couple interceptions as well. I would like to see Parker a little more.

edbuck51 (Oct 10, 2003 1:21:54 PM)
are we going to be able to run it better against the badgers

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:22:14 PM)
ed..ok..my bad..i read somewhere yesterday someone had them at 9-33...i just checked and actually it's 10-21..with unlv being their only opponent at .500 or above

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:22:17 PM)
I love this world, I just got booted, so I can't read any of the old ??? Last one I saw was from computerbuck on Nick Smith and Chauncey Incarnato. No, I don't think Smith is coming here, Incarnato has or will be offered (apparently). Whether he de-commits from that sinking ND ship will be up to him.

InTresselITrust (Oct 10, 2003 1:22:38 PM)
Parker's a walk-on guys. Walk-ons get very few chances. He was lucky to get into a game and he fumbled his first opportunity. That's life.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:23:13 PM)
edbuck51, hopefully. OSU is averaging 127.2 yards per game on the ground. If they can just get that up to 150-175, that would be great. Not likely, but would be great.

worthabuck (Oct 10, 2003 1:23:16 PM)
ANd about parker...the coaches see him every day, if he was better, don't you think he would get to play

edbuck51 (Oct 10, 2003 1:23:23 PM)
Who, besides BJ Sander, needs to have a career night on Saturday

InTresselITrust (Oct 10, 2003 1:23:32 PM)
Steve, are you saying Smith will never be offered or that he would go elsewhere anyway? I thought if OSU offered he'd be a Buckeye.

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:23:43 PM)
we're discussing wisky's opponents records vs osu opponents so far, steve Wi....10-21..with unlv as the only foe they've faced with a winning record..osu opponents..15-13...every team .500 or better with the exception of NU

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:23:45 PM)
Susan, we won't hold that againat you. InTresselTrust, any port in a storm. Parker should have gotten another chance.

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:24:31 PM)
ed..one of our running backs I'd say...Lydell or Hall...or both

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:24:34 PM)
edbuck51, got your answer right here: Lydell Ross, Drew Carter, A.J. Hawk, the Pagac/D'Andrea MLB platoon, Nate "Spider" Salley. That's all.

ttime (Oct 10, 2003 1:24:46 PM)

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:25:03 PM)
career day for hawk? can he get any better?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:25:08 PM)
InTresselTrust, I see no offer for Smith.

edbuck51 (Oct 10, 2003 1:25:18 PM)
there must be more to roshawn than just the fumble. holmes has made some big big fumbles, and is still in there

edbuck51 (Oct 10, 2003 1:25:56 PM)
if aj hawk can play better, that is going to be awesome

NEOhio (Oct 10, 2003 1:25:58 PM)
I am impressed with Fox thus far. His vertical leap is phenomenal. Hoping he has a great game.

ttime (Oct 10, 2003 1:25:59 PM)
Steve, I think Sanders will have to have a huge game this weekend, any thoughts?

BretGoBlue (Oct 10, 2003 1:26:04 PM)
hehehe i'm inside enemy territory :)

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:26:14 PM)
screw blue

C-villeBuck (Oct 10, 2003 1:26:26 PM)
Didnt Archie fumble his first carry also

edbuck51 (Oct 10, 2003 1:26:37 PM)
are they still playing football in michigan

BretGoBlue (Oct 10, 2003 1:26:38 PM)
hey now... just continue like I wasn't here!

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:26:48 PM)
no problem bret...we will

computerbuck (Oct 10, 2003 1:26:56 PM)
if what you say about walkons is true, what happened to "the best player plays" line from Tressel?

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:27:03 PM)
we know you're taking notes to send along to lloyd

InTresselITrust (Oct 10, 2003 1:27:10 PM)
Steve, How are some of the db's we've gotten commitments from doing in their senior seasons? I'm not sold on Underwood, and I've not heard much about Sirjo after all the hype regarding his highlight tape. How have they done in your opinion. Do we go after more db's (aside from Ginn of course)?

worthabuck (Oct 10, 2003 1:27:21 PM)
computer...he obviously isn't the best player

ttime (Oct 10, 2003 1:27:30 PM)
bret, can you remind us of UM record?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:27:37 PM)
Susan, Hawk can get a little better, but I agree he is everything we could have ever hoped for.

BretGoBlue (Oct 10, 2003 1:27:47 PM)
This isn't a U-M chat :)

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:28:17 PM)
no..the um chat is over at www.fireloydd.com

NEOhio (Oct 10, 2003 1:28:28 PM)
I'm going on a limb, but I hope Minnesota thumps them.

BuckeyeDave (Oct 10, 2003 1:28:32 PM)
EdBuck51 - They're playing football, just not winning football ;-)

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:28:33 PM)
NEOhio, Fox also needs to have a great game. Say Gamble takes Evans. Brandon Williams is just as good, guys and gals. Fox needs to contain him (and he will obviously also be on Evans at times as well).

InTresselITrust (Oct 10, 2003 1:28:35 PM)
First thing Bret's ever said that I agree with. Let's talk about the undefeated national champions, not some also-ran 3-2 team.

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:28:44 PM)
i hope that's on the radio tonight..cuz we'll be on the road..

computerbuck (Oct 10, 2003 1:28:56 PM)
we have been told by some here that he looks good in practice and the spring game ... how will we know if we don't get to see him on the field?

edbuck51 (Oct 10, 2003 1:28:57 PM)
is stepanovich really healthy? i'm a little worried about his real status

NEOhio (Oct 10, 2003 1:29:00 PM)
Have a safe trip Susan. GO BUCKS!

BretGoBlue (Oct 10, 2003 1:29:04 PM)
Susan - try 760

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:29:09 PM)

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:29:10 PM)
ttime, last year, they won because of Sander's great punting (at least in small part). Yes, Sander must come through.

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:29:29 PM)
u mean grooms punting last yr?

NEOhio (Oct 10, 2003 1:29:37 PM)
Sander's had some great hang times thus far.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:29:43 PM)
BretGoBlue, welcome, if it's any solace I think Michigan puts it back together tonight. I'd say they'll play their best game of the year, but they already did that against ND.

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:30:20 PM)
that might work brett..i used to get 760 on the car radio when i lived in janesville..

BretGoBlue (Oct 10, 2003 1:30:35 PM)
Yay I got welcomed :) Not to sound like a fool but what's your specialty area Steve.... are you a recruiting guy or a guy that reports more on the current team

BuckeyeDave (Oct 10, 2003 1:30:40 PM)
Steve - Against ND? ND has shown themselves to be mediocre at best!

edbuck51 (Oct 10, 2003 1:30:54 PM)
i'm with you steve. the wolves have to win, they will get the gophers

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 10, 2003 1:31:07 PM)
Although I won't be cheering for Michigan I wouldn't mind them beating Minnesota, No more sharing the Big Ten Title with teams we don't play.

BuckeyeDave (Oct 10, 2003 1:31:33 PM)
Is Minnesota this year's Iowa?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:31:38 PM)
I think Sirjo is doing fine. Haven't heard much about Shaun Lane on defense, He's running up a storm on offense. Brandon Underwood's team hasn't done well and I never see his name in the paper, so I have no clue what's going on there. Yes, they want Ginn and maybe Devon Lyons or somebody else. Some think Ginn will be better as a receiver at the college level.

edbuck51 (Oct 10, 2003 1:32:18 PM)
is anybody in the country going to be undefeated this year? if texas gets Okie tomorrow, i doubt it

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 10, 2003 1:32:36 PM)
The Buckeyes!

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:32:39 PM)
Susan, 760 AM WJR with Frank Beckman. They'll have all the fun at 8 p.m.., I assume, unless the Red Wings maybe preempt them.

BuckeyeDave (Oct 10, 2003 1:32:39 PM)
Steve - do you know if Mike Wiley is still playing at Dallas?

BuckeyeDave (Oct 10, 2003 1:33:16 PM)
Hockey is irrelevant, especially pre-season hockey.

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 10, 2003 1:33:31 PM)
Hockey real season has started.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:33:33 PM)
edbuck51, he seemed to say he was at or close to 100 percent the other day. Even if he only plays 60-75 percent of the plays, that would be great.

NEOhio (Oct 10, 2003 1:33:38 PM)
I read in the paper today that the Jacksonville punter is hurt. Anyone know what's going on with Groom?

BretGoBlue (Oct 10, 2003 1:33:48 PM)
this is the last thing I'll say about Michigan vs. Minnesota and then i'll keep it osu related.... for those of you interested in a quick buck the line on the game is Michigan + 1 which I'd practically bet the house on.... SUSAN - if 760 has the wings try 1050 they also do Michigan Football.... now back to the Bucks :)

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:34:02 PM)
groom just had a tryout somewhere....i forgot which team

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:34:10 PM)
it wasn't jacksonville

BretGoBlue (Oct 10, 2003 1:34:14 PM)
Lions i think

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 10, 2003 1:34:21 PM)
Detroit is looking for punter. Bret any info.

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:34:23 PM)
i think you're right, bret

NEOhio (Oct 10, 2003 1:34:33 PM)
Well apparently he cut his plant leg.

BretGoBlue (Oct 10, 2003 1:34:34 PM)
Groom tried out for the lions

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:34:42 PM)
yes..ne..with an ax

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:34:43 PM)
BretGoBlue, I go both ways. I guess I excel more on covering the team, but I have called hundreds of kids in my day, too.

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 10, 2003 1:34:46 PM)
cut with an axe.

NEOhio (Oct 10, 2003 1:35:09 PM)
Yeah -- some kind of weird thing like that in the locker room.

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 10, 2003 1:35:43 PM)
Steve do you have an inside scoop on how EJ cut hand.

InTresselITrust (Oct 10, 2003 1:35:45 PM)
I agree edbuck, I think we could see ZERO undefeateds this year. As you said, Texas needs to beat OU but then I think we should be rooting for Miami to beat FSU. I think Miami plays a much tougher sched the rest of the way and will fall to someone. If FSU wins, they may win out.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:35:52 PM)
BuckeyeDave, UM played a flawless game against what is supposed to be at least a decent team (ND). No, Minnesota is not this year's Iowa (at least not until they win 11 of their first 12 games, like Iowa did ... VBG).

InTresselITrust (Oct 10, 2003 1:36:43 PM)
Talk about a team beating no one. Minnesota is this year's Minnesota until they beat someone (hopefully tonight).

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:36:57 PM)
edbuck51, Oklahoma is the closest thing I see to a sure thing. But even they have some land mines with Texas, Okie State, Tech and the Big 12 title game (looking like Neb. at this point).

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:37:06 PM)
wasn't minnie undefeated last year when the came to columbus and got thumped?

BuckeyeDave (Oct 10, 2003 1:37:07 PM)
ITT - I'm with you on that one!

BretGoBlue (Oct 10, 2003 1:37:24 PM)
yes they were

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:37:36 PM)
Not sure about Mike Wiley.

BuckeyeDave (Oct 10, 2003 1:38:40 PM)
In retrospect, umich hasn't really beaten anyone worth talking about.

BretGoBlue (Oct 10, 2003 1:38:59 PM)
hey now houston's undefeated other then us!

BretGoBlue (Oct 10, 2003 1:39:13 PM)

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:39:24 PM)
wow....that's impressive

edbuck51 (Oct 10, 2003 1:39:34 PM)
how bout them stinkin' irish being 11 point underdogs against pitt. Ty gonna have a long year

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:39:55 PM)
Cincinnatibuck, yes, I was told the story. Not sure if how E.J. got hurt is meant for public consumption. I don't have a police report or anything (there wasn't one made, I was told). So I don't think I'm going to be the one that shares those details (at least the little bit I was told thirdhand) publically.

BuckeyeDave (Oct 10, 2003 1:39:56 PM)
BGB - You do have a point there. If I were a umich fan, I'd hang my team's rep on a Houston victory too.

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 10, 2003 1:40:15 PM)
Mike Wiley isn't listed as a player on NFL.com

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:40:23 PM)
remember when the rumor that osu was trying to get ty in for an interview for the HC job? and remember how many people were excited about that prospect?

NEOhio (Oct 10, 2003 1:40:48 PM)
Thank God that didn't go down Susan huh?

bucknut13 (Oct 10, 2003 1:40:48 PM)
I hope the BretGoBlue thing is a joke! I thought this was for Bucknuts only!

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:40:49 PM)
i think wiley was released by the cowboys

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:40:52 PM)
No, they had one prior loss, I believe. But the week they played they were 2 of only like 14 teams left nationally with 0 or 1 loss.

BuckeyeDave (Oct 10, 2003 1:41:02 PM)
Susan -I've not heard that one. What's the scoop?

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:41:07 PM)

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:41:14 PM)
which one dave?

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:41:19 PM)
wiley or ty?

BuckeyeDave (Oct 10, 2003 1:41:29 PM)
Susan - Ty.

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 10, 2003 1:41:30 PM)
Steve that's fine. The whole thing just sounded as if it wasn't an accident that happened say at home.

edbuck51 (Oct 10, 2003 1:41:39 PM)
i remember, ... and was sort of for it. man am i glad how things worked out. ty looks more like coop on the sidelines than coop did

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:42:20 PM)
Susan, I think Willingham gave OSU a cursory look but decided to stay at Stanford. That is until ND came calling. He had them where he wanted them. They had to overpay to hit a HR after the O'Leary fiasco.

BuckeyeDave (Oct 10, 2003 1:42:30 PM)
EdBuck - Thats too bad. I'm no 'domer fan but I was hoping Ty would be a great coach.

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:42:44 PM)
back during the coach search before JT was hired..willingham was one of the names being tossed around. I believe he was approached by osu and asked of his interest in coming to columbus. A lot of fans were excited..thinking he'd be a great coach for the Buckeyes

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:43:27 PM)
bucknut13, obviously, you can sign in as anybody you like. Is BretGoBlue a member of the premium board? I don't know. If not, it's probably not him.

buckeyeron (Oct 10, 2003 1:43:45 PM)
This goes without saying, and no disrespect to ty, I am happy the way things ended up

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:44:00 PM)
Cincinnatibuck, from what I know, no, it was not an accident at home.

bucknut13 (Oct 10, 2003 1:44:14 PM)
Thanks Steve, I was getting a little nervous for a second.

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:44:16 PM)
i heard the same thing steve

edbuck51 (Oct 10, 2003 1:44:18 PM)
Ty did a decent job at stanford, but the west coast offense aint gonna work in midwest football. he better change his system or it's hasta la vista baby

NEOhio (Oct 10, 2003 1:44:35 PM)
So did I, but kids do "dumb" things.

NEOhio (Oct 10, 2003 1:45:38 PM)
Anything new on the Kusick (SP?) front?

BretGoBlue (Oct 10, 2003 1:45:54 PM)
wait but it is me

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:46:00 PM)
No, I have not heard of any developments there. They obviously need a punter.

buckeyeron (Oct 10, 2003 1:46:01 PM)
Steve I am late getting here so I apologize if the 6 million dollar question has been asked, but does the offense show sighns of real life or not (your opinion)?

edbuck51 (Oct 10, 2003 1:46:06 PM)
do you think the bucks will pass a lot tomorrow night? i'm betting at least 30 passes

BretGoBlue (Oct 10, 2003 1:46:32 PM)
Bucknut13 - anybody from any premium board can read all the premium articles.... that means that I can read the article posted that has the room password :)

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:46:40 PM)
craig told tressel the drs said he can't throw more than 50 times.. :)

NEOhio (Oct 10, 2003 1:46:59 PM)
So do they utilize McMullen like say half and half?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:47:06 PM)
buckeyeron, yes, with 2 weeks to dissect this defense, I think even JT will come up with a good game plan tomorrow night (VBG). From what I've seen, the TE can carve these guys up, and OSU has the 3, yes, count 'em 3 tight ends to do it.

edbuck51 (Oct 10, 2003 1:47:07 PM)
i'll bet they keep it under 50

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:48:01 PM)
edbuck51, check back with me after the first quarter. If they've run the ball 12 times and netted 4 yards, yes, they're going to put the ball up. Those decisions are made as the game wears on and are dictated, obviously, by time, down and distance, score, etc.

edbuck51 (Oct 10, 2003 1:48:15 PM)
i hope louis irizary gets his first catch at a meaningful time tomorrow night

NEOhio (Oct 10, 2003 1:48:20 PM)
Is Joe going to be ready? 100%?

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:48:34 PM)
i agree ed...and LI will score

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:48:54 PM)
NE Ohio, no, I don't see that. If McMullen plays, it will be just for a series or 2, IMHO.

edbuck51 (Oct 10, 2003 1:49:25 PM)
i sort figure the week off gives them a chance to come out with a surprising game plan. i look for them to use the pass effectively to open up the run

NEOhio (Oct 10, 2003 1:49:28 PM)
Will Zwick see action? He has a heck of an arm. That pass Irizarry dropped was a bomb.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:49:28 PM)
NEOhio, Spencer said he was close to 100 percent. Anything near 100 percent is good enough for me.

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 10, 2003 1:49:57 PM)
Steve your thoughts on Ira. Tressel mentioned on 1460 that we would see him in this game.

buckeyeron (Oct 10, 2003 1:50:09 PM)
Of the three does Oklahoma, Miami or Ohio State have the greaest chance to hang an L in the left collum, Imo Miami goes first, Ohio State second Oklahoma least to come up on the short end? Any Comment

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:50:14 PM)
edbuck51, what a refreshing change that will be ... oops, there goes Maurice Hall for a yard into left guard.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:50:46 PM)
NEOhio, I see no scenario where Zwick plays in this game. If Krenzel can't go, McMullen replaces him.

edbuck51 (Oct 10, 2003 1:51:01 PM)
he would have to push the left guard 2 yards downfield it he is going to gain a yard

NEOhio (Oct 10, 2003 1:51:01 PM)

beatthebadgers (Oct 10, 2003 1:51:07 PM)
(This user is now known as Arlin)

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 1:51:20 PM)
unless..steve...we have a huge lead....mop up time for justin....wouldn't that be nice?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:51:54 PM)
Cincinnatibuck, I guess that means they plan to play him, probably like what they did with Zwick -- in no position where a turnover will kill them (probably near midfield or on UW side, if they have even a slight lead).

bucknut13 (Oct 10, 2003 1:52:55 PM)
Steve, I know I am being a pain, but can premium members of other (ie. up north) boards join our chats?

Arlin (Oct 10, 2003 1:53:11 PM)
Steve, Do you feel the Buckeyes are getting close to a Florida State, or Nebraska type of run on contending for National Titles. With the way they are recruting athletes and the type of coach Tressel is. I just have this feeling, we may be in for along run. Thoughts?

BretGoBlue (Oct 10, 2003 1:53:19 PM)
Bucknut13 - I just did!

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:53:28 PM)
buckeyeron, well Miami and OSU are in serious peril tomorrow. But I'd agree, I think FSU beats Miami tomorrow and OSU and Oklahoma survive to live another day.

bucknut13 (Oct 10, 2003 1:53:29 PM)
Good for you!

BretGoBlue (Oct 10, 2003 1:53:46 PM)
so obviously we can.....

bucknut13 (Oct 10, 2003 1:53:54 PM)

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 10, 2003 1:54:15 PM)
Bret who does your Johnnies play this week?

BretGoBlue (Oct 10, 2003 1:54:25 PM)
no idea i'm at college

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:54:33 PM)
bucknut13, I guess that is possible. Because we can read premium info on other sites, right? Maybe we need to put the password on the OSU-only premium forum.

BretGoBlue (Oct 10, 2003 1:54:50 PM)
Steve that hurts!

bucknut13 (Oct 10, 2003 1:55:08 PM)
Please do, I can't stay in here today if that is the case!

edbuck51 (Oct 10, 2003 1:55:17 PM)
what's the diff? bgb isn't causing any problems

bucknut13 (Oct 10, 2003 1:55:43 PM)
edbuck, if you would like to converse with him go on their site!

BuckeyeDave (Oct 10, 2003 1:55:57 PM)
Its always good to hear other opinions

edbuck51 (Oct 10, 2003 1:55:58 PM)
let's talk about football

BretGoBlue (Oct 10, 2003 1:56:17 PM)
hmm....but i'm helping in the conversation.... notice earlier I was talking about Groom

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:56:51 PM)
Arlin, yes, I think we could see that. I'm more than a little concerned about 2004, though. You will only have 9 starters back (4 on each side and Nugie). Could be a rough year.

edbuck51 (Oct 10, 2003 1:57:32 PM)
it might be good though. we need some new blood on the o-line

NEOhio (Oct 10, 2003 1:57:44 PM)
What year is Boone?

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 10, 2003 1:57:50 PM)

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 1:58:03 PM)
NE, not sure it matters. Isn't he gone?

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 10, 2003 1:58:26 PM)
NE, are you talking about Alex Boone?

NEOhio (Oct 10, 2003 1:58:32 PM)

NEOhio (Oct 10, 2003 1:58:41 PM)
Thought he was a senior

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 10, 2003 1:58:49 PM)
2005 recruit

edbuck51 (Oct 10, 2003 1:58:55 PM)
he is a junior in high school

NEOhio (Oct 10, 2003 1:59:08 PM)
What are our chances with Rehring. He is huge.

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 10, 2003 1:59:22 PM)
verbal given already

NEOhio (Oct 10, 2003 2:00:16 PM)
Patterson's been pretty impressive thus far, IMO

edbuck51 (Oct 10, 2003 2:00:51 PM)
pitcock is going to hurt a lot of people as well. he is very strong

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 2:01:28 PM)
I was confused. That is Alex Boone, he's a junior. I thought you meant LeAndre Boone, who may be out of all of our lives forever.

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 10, 2003 2:02:03 PM)
Steve is the increase in the number of players you can take on road in effect this year?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 2:03:00 PM)
Cincinnatibuck, yes they are allowed to take 70, so that encompasses all of the scholarship guys who are playing and probably 3-4 key walk-ons.

BuckeyeDave (Oct 10, 2003 2:03:06 PM)
Coach Tressel has said that when they are diagnosing the problems on offense, they'll see a mistake at RT on one play, and LG the next then at LT the next. There doesn't seem to be a pattern. Doesn't that tend to happen when you substitute on the O-Line as much as the Buckeyes do? Do other D1A teams sub the O-Line that much?

BuckeyeDave (Oct 10, 2003 2:03:59 PM)
What happened to LeAndre Boone? Who took his spot on the depth chart?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 2:04:21 PM)
BuckeyeDave, no, the problems were there BEFORE they started substituting and the starters were going the distance. I think some teams do rotate like this. Most, I imagine, prefer to go with one unit.

edbuck51 (Oct 10, 2003 2:04:35 PM)
i didn't know boone was on the depth chart

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 2:04:46 PM)
Boone was never in the two-deep.

BuckeyeDave (Oct 10, 2003 2:05:20 PM)
What happened to him? They way you put it, it sounds like his departure may not be such a bad thing.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 2:06:05 PM)
Not sure why he left. Could have been academics. Nobody ever really said. I don't have a number for him, so I can't even guess where he might be.

buckaholic (Oct 10, 2003 2:06:20 PM)
hey steve, have you heard anything more on Horford, is the 25th still likely of his visit?

BuckeyeDave (Oct 10, 2003 2:06:29 PM)
Also, if the problems on the O-Line pre-existed the substituting, what does that point to? Coaching? Lack of focus? Poor practice habits? What your take?

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 10, 2003 2:06:54 PM)
Is Gamble on kick off returns or is it Hall and Childress? Just want to know for my benefit because I can't remember.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 2:07:27 PM)
buckaholic, That was the last I heard. He would visit 25th. The football team is away that weekend, so it should be quiet and he can watch team practice, etc. in peace. Not bad.

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 2:08:25 PM)
I have to get going...packing to finish up. See you tomorrow Steve. Safe trip and GO BUCKS!!

NEOhio (Oct 10, 2003 2:08:37 PM)
Heard Pierce was booming then at practice.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 2:09:05 PM)
BuckeyeDave, where do you start to try and answer that question? I did not like the offensive scheme, running plays into the teeth of the defense. So let's start there. I honestly believe Bollman is a good O-line coach. Maybe the players lacked some focus. I don't get to watch practice, so I can't attest to that. They just flat out aren't getting the job done.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 2:09:49 PM)
The kick returners are normally Gamble and Hall. They each have 3 returns and Childress has one.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 2:10:06 PM)
Susan, I will see you tomorrow. Have a safe trip.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 2:10:39 PM)
NEOhio, Pierce may turn out to be a nice pickup. I liked him when I got a chance to talk to him.

Susan (Oct 10, 2003 2:11:36 PM)
fwiw..i met brian pierce a couple weeks ago..great kid. later everyone..

NEOhio (Oct 10, 2003 2:11:54 PM)
Have a safe trip.

BuckeyeDave (Oct 10, 2003 2:12:04 PM)
Steve - If Ohio State is going to run into the teeth of the defense, they're going to have to run the TB behind a FB to pick up the LB. And if the FB doesn't knock the LB out of the way, we can expect some very short plays.

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 10, 2003 2:12:32 PM)
Safe trip Susan and bring back great pictures as always.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 2:13:49 PM)
BuckeyeDave, I agree. It should help to have a FB back in the picture.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 2:14:06 PM)
Anything else????

buckaholic (Oct 10, 2003 2:14:18 PM)
Steve, what do you suppose the chances of Malik actually signing early period are?

buckaholic (Oct 10, 2003 2:14:23 PM)
he's throwing everyone off lol

BuckeyeDave (Oct 10, 2003 2:14:45 PM)
Steve - When the Bucks use a single back offense, are they running dives to a pre-determined hole or are they allowing the TB to pick the hole to hit?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 2:15:09 PM)
buckaholic, I think he will. I tried to call the kid for a week and couldn't get through because of all the reporters and coaches calling. I think 2-3 more weeks of this will be enough for him to end it and sign with somebody, anybody in Nov.

buckaholic (Oct 10, 2003 2:15:39 PM)
I hope so, I really believe he's Ohio State's to lose, but the longer this drags out, the more I tend to wonder

edbuck51 (Oct 10, 2003 2:16:10 PM)
how's horford buckaholic

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 2:16:18 PM)
BuckeyeDave, looks to me like in most cases, they have an option of which way to go. Unfortunately, vision does not appear to be Hall's strong suit (and maybe not Ross' either). That's where Reecie excelled. He saw everything, processed it and made the right choice.

buckaholic (Oct 10, 2003 2:16:51 PM)
ed, he's a pretty good post player, he's 6'8 or 6'9, very good inside moves

buckaholic (Oct 10, 2003 2:17:09 PM)
he's leaning towards florida, but they just picked up a post player, and that might affect his decision some

BuckeyeDave (Oct 10, 2003 2:17:32 PM)
Plus when the Bucks run those type of plays, they take too long to develop. The window opens and closes too quickly for them.

edbuck51 (Oct 10, 2003 2:17:36 PM)
thans, wrong sport, now i know why i hadn't heard of him

buckaholic (Oct 10, 2003 2:17:44 PM)
lol, it's no problem

BuckeyeDave (Oct 10, 2003 2:18:15 PM)
Good Discussion! Bye all! GO BUCKS!!

buckaholic (Oct 10, 2003 2:18:21 PM)

SteveHelwagen (Oct 10, 2003 2:18:32 PM)
Thanks everybody. I've got to run. As things stand, I am not sure whether I will be available next Friday or not.
