Hello everyone! Good Buckeye day to you all!
buckeyefan47 (Oct 16, 2003 1:03:17 PM)
I WANT TO BELIEVE THAT TRESSEL WILL OPEN THE OFFENSE AND THROW THE BALL LIKE HE SAID WHEN HE WAS HIRED. I KNOW HE SAID HE WAS ALL ABOUT ADAPTING TO HIS STRONG POINTS BUT IT SEEMS LIKE THAT IS ONE OF THE WEAKEST PARTS OF HIS COACHING STAFF. YOUR OPINION
GaryHousteau (Oct 16, 2003 1:05:38 PM)
For those of you who didn't hear yet, Jamario O'Neal has been cleared to play for Glenville by the OHSAA this morning.
GaryHousteau (Oct 16, 2003 1:08:18 PM)
That's a loaded question about the coaching staff. I've been around Jim Tressel teams for many years now and it's like Steve says about putting a square peg in a round hole. What you saw last year is the way it's been over most of his winning years at YSU.
stemmshady (Oct 16, 2003 1:08:15 PM)
Gary couple questions....First off who do you feel is the best high school team out there? I know some guys from around the state. My buddies from Warren think Harding is unbeatable. You speak highly of Ignatius, and another guy would bet his house on Mentor. What do you think? Also are you hearing of any sleeper prospects in the Youngstown/Warren/Cleveland area?
GaryHousteau (Oct 16, 2003 1:12:13 PM)
Harding is getting better each week. I have to give them the edge right now although I really like Ignatius as well. I haven't seen Mentor this year, I saw them in the playoffs last year and I like their senior laden unit from what I know of them. Edge Harding. Sleeper prospects...I liked this Antwon Hight from Canton McKinley, a junior 6-3 285, two-way player. Real nice looking talent. And Benedictine is just loaded with talent in their sophomore class. They have a receiver, #80, that's going to be dynamite.
worthabuck (Oct 16, 2003 1:12:25 PM)
Gary, Have you be hearing anything on the OL front, as far as instate players?
GaryHousteau (Oct 16, 2003 1:13:52 PM)
Other than the Braxton soap opera, not really. Of course there is the banter about Incarnato going on as well so I guess he's still in play. And Cadogan was the only other lineman instate that I was really looking at at one point.
bellevuebuck (Oct 16, 2003 1:13:56 PM)
I would have thought with Mo C. filing suit against tOSU, they would have immediately dropped him from his schollie. Why havent we heard anymore about this
GaryHousteau (Oct 16, 2003 1:16:02 PM)
My peeps have told me that despite all the goings-on, he will make every effort to do what he needs to do to still remain eligible to play for the Buckeyes. Whether or not that actually comes to fruition remains to be seen. I have purposely remained mum on the entire Clarett ordeal because of the relationships that I have with some people. But my sources have been true all along the way.
worthabuck (Oct 16, 2003 1:16:11 PM)
What is your opinion of Boone from St Eds? I read that some player recently said that he was the best he had played against.
GaryHousteau (Oct 16, 2003 1:19:24 PM)
I'm big on the look test as an initial part of my evaluation. First you have to look the part and if you don't then your game better be lights out. I saw Boone once in person and have seen him on film since. He passes the look test, in fact, I almost thought he was too big. He didn't give me a real favorable impression, sort of like the Jefferson Kelley syndrome. I wasn't overly impressed when I saw him play for Colerain and for whatever reason, I turned out to be correct on that evaluation. Boone is almost too big and he needs to play lights out to compensate for that, IMHO. I'll watch him more closely next year.
OrlandoBuckeye (Oct 16, 2003 1:20:01 PM)
What's up Gary? Sorry if this has already been asked, but what is the latest on Mike Massey and also are you still 100% on Ginn and Fred Davis?
Kirk (Oct 16, 2003 1:21:57 PM)
Just a reminder to everyone... this is a moderated chat, which means questions/posts come to a moderator and get posted one at a time for easier answering. There'll be a delay of a few minutes between you sending questions and the question getting posted
GaryHousteau (Oct 16, 2003 1:24:03 PM)
I understand that Massey has been hampered somewhat by injury and hasn't played full-go both ways recently. He's a tremendous talent on defense and even on offense as well at tight end. Everybody I've spoken with around Massey really doesn't give me any solid information. I'll try to focus in on him more come playoff time. I have no first-hand opinion on Massey's intentions but Michigan would have to be the team to beat and OSU could do that. Davis and Ginn are both absolute 100 percent locks. If you believed me about Freeman, it's the same with these two.
buckeyefan47 (Oct 16, 2003 1:24:11 PM)
DO YOU BELIEVE ROY HALL AND SANTONIO HOLMES WILL GET A CHANCE TO DO SOME THINGS THIS YEAR? ALSO WILL TED GINN GO TO OSU ARE LEAVE THE STATE?
GaryHousteau (Oct 16, 2003 1:27:00 PM)
Roy Hall and Santonio Holmes both have potentially great futures as well as Justin Zwick under center. The only people that can slow them down are the coaching staff at Ohio State. Ted Ginn, who should really be the Mr. Football award winner in Ohio this year, he's having a tremendous season, scoring on all three sides of the football and has just been nominated for the Watkins award, a national award. Yes Ginn will play for OSU but he may take a redshirt year first.
BuckeyeBK (Oct 16, 2003 1:27:18 PM)
Gary, what do you think of this weekend's game? Are we going to bounce back?
GaryHousteau (Oct 16, 2003 1:29:06 PM)
Sure we will. Look for the gadget plays to fly. Tressel will almost overcompensate on the trickeration to let the OSU fans at home know that he can indeed pull some of these plays out here and there. I look for the offense to overachieve and the defense will play lights out. Poor Fred Russell.
NEOhio (Oct 16, 2003 1:29:12 PM)
What about Eynon from Iggy?
GaryHousteau (Oct 16, 2003 1:30:23 PM)
Not currently on my radar screen sorry. Other than Hoyer and Massey, Ramella is the only other Iggy player I have my eye on right now.
will (Oct 16, 2003 1:30:35 PM)
Gary, how interested are the bucks in Incarnoto (spelling?) and what do you think the chances are of him decommiting if we are interested? Thanks, and keep up the good work from up there in y-town.
GaryHousteau (Oct 16, 2003 1:32:44 PM)
I always look to see what Duane and others have to say about Incarnato because I haven't had contact with him. I guess I'll need to find out for myself what his real situation is.
BuckeyeBK (Oct 16, 2003 1:32:56 PM)
Gary, what about Williams, any chance of an offer.. any chance of the kid from Dover (OL - Notre Dame commit), coming here, and what about the kid from Canton, the DL... great work!
GaryHousteau (Oct 16, 2003 1:36:37 PM)
Everybody knows that I love everything about Ray Williams as a running back and in fact I think he will win the Mr. Football award this year although I think that Ted Ginn has as much a right to that award as anyone. I really think more than anything else, that Williams wants to play close to home but he can't ignore Nebraska and Florida, I think those are his top two now. We shall see. He needs to get his academic house in order first. I don't know much about Incarnato sorry. And I love this two-way player from McKinley, Antwon Hight. What a good looking big body he has on him as a defensive tackle prospect and he caught a TD pass at tight end.
will (Oct 16, 2003 1:36:44 PM)
Gary, I have heard a few people question Freeman's instincts. Do you feel that is a fair criticism and who would you compare him most to out of our current L-backing core?
GaryHousteau (Oct 16, 2003 1:40:20 PM)
wow...I've heard nothing but the opposite about Freeman and I've only seen a highlight tape of him. I haven't seen him play in person which is the ideal way I like to see players. From everything I've seen and heard, that goes against the grain with Freeman. I would say Freeman can be another A.J. Hawk type player on the outside with even more speed and strength, but I don't think anyone on the LB corps will have the instincts that Hawk has. He might be as good as there is at OSU by the time his career is over.
BuckeyeDave (Oct 16, 2003 1:40:33 PM)
Gary - How do you define overachiving in terms of the Buckeye's offense? 150 yds on the ground? Tressel's pre-season goal was 200 on the ground and 250 through the air.
GaryHousteau (Oct 16, 2003 1:45:02 PM)
That 200/250 thing is obviously pie in the sky for this offense. Just think if we had those numbers with our defense the past two years. But Tressel will never change his spots, I affectionately call him the Mike Hargrove of college football (I'm a big Tribe fan as well), you win by playing/controlling the percentages. Scrap the running game it's non-existant and the future of it looks very dim as well. I think he'll throw more down the field to Jenkins and even Carter this week, maybe a reverse, etc., that's all.
BuckeyeBK (Oct 16, 2003 1:45:13 PM)
Gary, are you hearing anything about any of the OOS recruits: Mitchum or Byers?
GaryHousteau (Oct 16, 2003 1:47:34 PM)
I love Byers as much as Korey Stringer and Orlando Pace and there isn't a higher compliment that I can pay to a high school lineman. Stringer was awesome and then there was Pace. Enough said. Got to sleep at this kids house. Don't know our real chances with him although I'm encouraged we still have a good shot. I like Mitchum a lot as well and think we got a great shot at him. I'll be happy to get him no doubt.
Susan (Oct 16, 2003 1:47:44 PM)
Gary or Kirk. What's up with the certification issue and the NCAA? Does non-certified mean Ohio State athletics aren't eligible for NCAA sanctioned events or what?
GaryHousteau (Oct 16, 2003 1:48:51 PM)
Hi Susan, over my head on that one...sorry. All yours Kirk! Nice job in Madison this weekend btw. Smile!
Kirk (Oct 16, 2003 1:49:26 PM)
Well, I guess I'll say that if Andy Geiger isn't worried about it, then it's probably just a technicality we shouldn't be too concerned with. Hopefully.

buckeyefan47 (Oct 16, 2003 1:49:34 PM)
I HAVE SEEN SOME HIGKLIGHTS ON D. PRESSLEY AND I AM EXTREMELY IMPRESSED WITH HIM, HE IS A SUPER TALENT. WHY IS HE THINKING OF GOING TO A DOOR MAT LIKE NORTH CAROLINA?
GaryHousteau (Oct 16, 2003 1:50:56 PM)
I don't know! Sorry!
ImBack45 (Oct 16, 2003 1:50:58 PM)
Gary, sorry I got here late so not sure of the questions, but was curious in your time following northeast Ohio football it seems there are a lot of recruits from the area. However, why not anymore offensive lineman? There has to be something driving those good teams over there besides the outstanding skill athletes. Any input?
GaryHousteau (Oct 16, 2003 1:55:00 PM)
That's a great question! It must be the skilled athletes. I guess Ignatius has turned out a few good ones over the years, and they've won a lot of the championships, but Korey Stringer was the last really dominant lineman I remember watching. Antonio Hall was pretty good at McKinley as well. Don't know an answer to that???
buckeyefan47 (Oct 16, 2003 1:55:11 PM)
IN YOUR HONEST OPINION GARY, WILL GAMBLE RETURN FOR HIS SENIOR SEASON, OR HEAD TO SUNDAY PLAY?
GaryHousteau (Oct 16, 2003 1:56:43 PM)
He better return because I'm still waiting for him to make the big-time plays that big-time players make in big-time games. I'm sure he's a lockdown corner and all, but it's time we see some plays from this guy. He's had more negative big plays than positive ones.
buckeyefan47 (Oct 16, 2003 1:56:57 PM)
IS D. FOX AS GOOD AS EVERYONE THINKS? IT SEEMS HE IS ALWAYS TRAILING ON CROSSING PATTERNS AND MISSES SOME RELATIVELY SIMPLE COVERAGES. HE WAS BEHIND ALL DAY AT WISCONSIN!
GaryHousteau (Oct 16, 2003 1:59:26 PM)
Dustin Fox is such a great person, which I know isn't the question, you have to like everything about this kid. If he's as bad as we have on defense than I'm extremely happy about that. He's had a few down moments this year, but as the "other" corner, I think he's doing a pretty good job. He wasn't very far behind on that pickoff in the Wisconsin game. I guess he can't make every play but he's a pretty darn good corner, IMHO and a better person, truly.
loverbuck (Oct 16, 2003 1:59:29 PM)
Who can put pressure on Tressel to open the offense up? The players? Other coaches?
GaryHousteau (Oct 16, 2003 2:02:27 PM)
I keep telling people that JT knows no other way to coach football. He has to control every aspect of the game and that is his way on offense of directing and controlling the game and until he abdicates (good word) that power on offense, nothing can ever change. I guess the media is the only one that prod him to make a change. I don't ever see it happening. It's what makes him the coach that he is and that's a pretty darn good one in spite of his offense.
Kirk (Oct 16, 2003 2:02:43 PM)
Ok, it's about the top of the hour, so thanks Gary for stopping by today... I'll stick around for a bit in case anyone has any last questions maybe about out of state recruits, the site, or anything. Thanks Gary and we'll chat with you again next week!
GaryHousteau (Oct 16, 2003 2:03:50 PM)
Thank you all, it's been fun as usual. Always feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to discuss anything else. Anyone. Go Bucks.
