GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 1:01:09 PM)
Hi away!

toledobuck (Oct 23, 2003 1:01:32 PM)
b4 we kick off the football stuff, any word of late on malik hairston?

GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 1:02:07 PM)
Not my genra sorry!

Kirk (Oct 23, 2003 1:03:03 PM)
Nothing new on Malik that I know of.

toledobuck (Oct 23, 2003 1:03:27 PM)
cool. do you think osu is just going to pound 'em on the ground this weekend til they figure it out or will they use a balanced attack and try to run it up and really get it going?

GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 1:04:00 PM)
I have confirmed that Michigan State and Iowa have pulled their offers to Delbert Ferguson. Nebraska, Syracuse and Va.Tech are still potential players. And it looks like he won't be enrolling early anywhere now either. Unfortunate situation anyway you look at it.

GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 1:04:54 PM)
For Toledo...Jim Tressel will flex his muscle on the ground. No nonsense approach. They'll punish Indiana on the ground and everyone will think we've cured our woes on the ground.

toledobuck (Oct 23, 2003 1:05:23 PM)
much to all of our dismay 2 weeks down the road

Kirk (Oct 23, 2003 1:06:30 PM)
Gary, don't know if you feel you got a real good look at Pittman, but based on what you saw, what are your thoughts?

GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 1:09:05 PM)
I saw Pittman in limited action against a decent Akron North team two weeks ago and he never really got it going on the ground that game. With his toe still not 100 percent and it won't be this year, it's hard for me to gauge his performance. He wears a brace in his shoe so it has to be uncomfortable. Buchtel plays Garfield this weekend for potentially all the marbles. It's one of the games I'm still considering to go to this weekend. I would get to see Wells from Garfield as well.

sandtraps (Oct 23, 2003 1:10:25 PM)
Any word on how Mark Tupa doing?

GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 1:10:50 PM)
Nothing recent on him no. Just keep him in your prayers.

BobbleHead (Oct 23, 2003 1:12:00 PM)
I don't know much about Sutton other than he's small, has great wheels, great moves, and puts up huge numbers. What else is there to know?

GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 1:14:34 PM)
That sums him up pretty good. He's a competitive young man. He wants to win more than any receiving any individual accolades. He's a tough runner and doesn't avoid contact. He idolizes his brother Tony Sutton who plays at Wooster and recently hurt his knee. He's a top hurdler in the state. And he's friends with LeBron is Tony Pittman for that matter. And he wants to bring a state title to Hoban.

sandtraps (Oct 23, 2003 1:15:38 PM)
Derek Morris in the news again for NCAA suspension and of course calling the Bucks a dirty program. do you have insight

Coop (Oct 23, 2003 1:15:40 PM)
Gary, how you doing man? Well, just a quick question for you. What are we going to do in your mind with the Quarterback spot? Will we go after the kid from Ignatius who committed to MSU??? I know we have Boeckman and Bauserman (who seems to remind me alot of Krenzel from what I read)... Thoughts? We dont' seem to have a stud, but that isn't anything new. I am very suprised by Zwick, he was suppose to be the best in the country. Hope your doing well my friend, Coop

GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 1:20:50 PM)
Hi Coop! I like Zwick a lot so I'm not too concerned with the future. After 5 years of Bellisari and Krenzel, I'm ready to go nuts. Let's face it, no QB will ever excel in a JT run offense, just the facts. I liken Zwick to a Krenzel with quarterbacking skills. I actually think he's a good fit under center for Tressel but I thought his brother Jared was a perfect fit for Tressel at YSU and he was a four-year backup. Forget about Hoyer, not shot at him. I think they like Boeckman as a backup. Slash will do a little bit of everything including taking snaps. I think Zwick could play as good or better than Krenzel right now. I know Krenzel is a leader, blah, blah, blah... but I want some quarterbacking play. That's not asking too much.

Coop (Oct 23, 2003 1:22:07 PM)
I agree, thanks man, play the best is our opinion I suppose*** Take care, Coop

GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 1:22:39 PM)
Hope to see you before the year is up Coop.

BuckeyeDave (Oct 23, 2003 1:23:50 PM)
Just got to the chat. Don't know if you've gone over this as yet... Is it time to start looking at replacing Jim Bollman? Everything else is working except the offense and nobody can point to one thing or individual so maybe its time for a new coach. How about Greg Studrawa from BGSU?

GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 1:25:46 PM)
Unless the play-calling stops going through JT, it doesn't matter who the coordinator is. It's never going to change. It is the only way JT knows how to control the game and win. It doesn't matter who the coordinator is unless JT is standing 20 yards away from the play being called in.

GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 1:26:32 PM)
Win ugly baby!

Susan (Oct 23, 2003 1:26:34 PM)
yeah, but Gary, with Bollman coming from an NFL team wouldn't you think he'd have the oline playing much better than they are? That really has nothing to do with play calling

Susan (Oct 23, 2003 1:26:50 PM)
Winning ugly got us a loss....;(

GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 1:29:48 PM)
True, I thought that was the case. The last two years, the O-line got better as the year went on and I attributed that success to Bollman. I just think you can't consistently block 8 guys with 6 people near the point of attack. We know that, they know that, the people selling popcorn in Ohio Stadium know that. There's no way to block the unblockable. But as long as we move the ball, punt and change field position, and play stellar defense....that's okay with JT. It's a chess game for him. And he's a great defense and great kickers. He's in heaven pretty much. Play not to lose. It's how he coaches forever and ever.

BuckeyeDave (Oct 23, 2003 1:29:59 PM)
I gotta agree w/Susan. If you can't point to a particular player or position or scheme or tendency, if the problem is that vague. It seems to me the problem is in coaching.

BuckeyeDave (Oct 23, 2003 1:31:59 PM)
So do you think that if the Bucks pass more/better, the running game could improve to 150 per game? 150 isn't really a lot to ask. It's really pretty mediocre.

GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 1:32:12 PM)
It's just the strategy that has won 5 national championships for Jim Tressel. What he did last year validated everything he's done at YSU in his mind. The formula will never change.

GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 1:32:43 PM)
I always hope it will...but it doesn't ever change...

BuckeyeDave (Oct 23, 2003 1:34:04 PM)
During the Iowa game, one of announcers said that OSU ran the ball 80% of time on first down. Thats pretty darn predictable and is a recipe for 2nd and long every time!

onebuck (Oct 23, 2003 1:34:17 PM)
Gary, what has happened to RJ Coleman? He came out of high school as a tight end and seems lost in the crowd of lineman.

GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 1:35:42 PM)
R.J. will be a serviceable offensive lineman. At least he has the tools for it. I would hope to see marked improvement by him in the spring. Love his size and agility and speed for a big guy.

GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 1:34:22 PM)
Just win baby...

Susan (Oct 23, 2003 1:34:32 PM)'re cracking me up

BuckeyeDave (Oct 23, 2003 1:35:46 PM)
Isn't a weak running game also a recipe for not being able attract any top-shelf high school prospects? Seems like a self-fulfilling prophecy.

BuckeyeDave (Oct 23, 2003 1:36:34 PM)
I meant "top-shelf high school RB prospects". Oops.

GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 1:37:58 PM)
Bingo... we care a lot about recruiting as fans and so does the staff obviously... but JT is a miracle worker in a home. He can get to the parents like no other. I think if he just continues to pound Ohio, this is The Ohio State University, and gets lucky with a couple of Florida kids each year, the success will continue down the road.

buckeyefan47 (Oct 23, 2003 1:37:50 PM)
hello gary! I was wondering if you think ohio state's offensive line will be able to step it up this weekend? and if they don't I really think ohio state is going to be very vulnerable for the upset

GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 1:39:25 PM)
We will rush for 300 yards this week and everyone will sing kumbaya for at least a week. No chance for any upset. We might score 40 points in regulation this week all on the ground. Smile!

onebuck (Oct 23, 2003 1:39:02 PM)
Gary, please discuss the difference in senior leadership this year and last year. Seems like this year's captains are less outgoing, but are they effective?

GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 1:41:12 PM)
I think we have lead by example captions, especially on defense. Those guys are monsters on the gridiron. I think the offensive guys need to change something.

BuckeyeDave (Oct 23, 2003 1:40:30 PM)
Well, he did get Clarett. After what I thought was a down year with Wells...

buckeyefan47 (Oct 23, 2003 1:41:06 PM)
well I know its definitely a long shot to get upset but the way things are going this season who know's? also is their any news about the severity of ross's shoulder stinger?

BuckeyeDave (Oct 23, 2003 1:41:12 PM)
We will win by 10-14, rushing for a buck 50.

Susan (Oct 23, 2003 1:41:41 PM)
I don't see that happening, Gary. JT's "m-o" has always been to use the patsies like a scrimmage. I bet once we get a decent lead, the back ups will play. We'll see Zwick lining up at wr again as well as other gadget plays that they practice but never seem to use in games where they could be useful. Thus, the score will be kept to a non-blowout tally.

GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 1:43:50 PM)
Ross needs to say nothing and let his rushing do the talking. He had a big game at Indiana two years ago so maybe he likes the soil there. I don't know of his injury status but it's always a concern. It's time for him to pull a Jonathon Wells down the stretch.

BuckeyeDave (Oct 23, 2003 1:42:36 PM)
It seems to me that the defense display much more fire, drive and passion when they play. The defense's goal is to stop EVERY rushing play for negative yardage. Thats clear. The offenses looks like its trying to run until a defender bumps into them.

BuckeyeDave (Oct 23, 2003 1:44:35 PM)
Unranked WVU's offensive line was pushing the VTech defensive line all over the field last night. Of course, VTech is relatively untested so far this year.

GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 1:46:12 PM)
But Susan, JT also has to send a statement that the offense will be okay down the stretch. You may even see a couple of big pass plays mixed in with the punishing ground game. Sure JZ will get some snaps but the three backs on offense will remain the same and they'll all get to pound the ball.

GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 1:49:03 PM)
Buckeye Dave, it's all about momentum for the offense now. They need to find something they can execute well and build on it. That's why you'll see them run 'Dave' off tackle till the cows come home this week. Build from there. Shocking huh?

BuckeyeDave (Oct 23, 2003 1:49:24 PM)
"Ross needs to say nothing and let his rushing do the talking" Amen to that. I'll be at the game Saturday, rooting for the Buckeyes 'til I'm hoarse!

buckeyefan47 (Oct 23, 2003 1:49:27 PM)
Gary, I have been hearing up here in Toledo that Fred Davis is seriously thinking about MSU and Michigan and has his doubts about osu and their style of play. is their any truth to that?

GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 1:50:22 PM)
Nope! Is that a simple enough answer. He's a lock and key! That's better than a lock. Smile!

onebuck (Oct 23, 2003 1:52:07 PM)
Brandon Mitchell was once getting a lot of PT. Has he since been surpassed by Donte Witner?

GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 1:54:33 PM)
Cream is rising to the top. Donte "Cream" Whitner. Sounds pretty good.

GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 1:52:54 PM)
JT's gesture to Drushawn's family with the ring given to his family went a long way in the Rogers community. Davis is a Buckeye no sweat.

buckeyefan47 (Oct 23, 2003 1:57:08 PM)
I was pretty close with dru's cousin Antoine H. and he said that that meant a lot to the family and the city of Toledo. Say what people have said about Tressel and the Clarett situation JT is a great man and a very good Christian as well

buckeyefan47 (Oct 23, 2003 1:54:40 PM)
I have read a little here and there that osu might try d'andrea in the backfield on short down situations until Joe and Schnittker get healthy. in your opinion is this a good decision, or not?

GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 1:57:05 PM)
I wish everyone would just leave Mike D'Andrea alone and let him play middle linebacker. This kid is getting better and better and he was making some great plays against Iowa. Everyone is writing him off at Mike next year but this kid just keeps getting better and better. Forget any offense from D'Andrea.

Susan (Oct 23, 2003 1:58:13 PM)
D'andrea played TE in high school. The one game I saw I thought he could play on either side of the ball

Kirk (Oct 23, 2003 1:58:33 PM)
We're coming up on the top of the hour... be sure to get any last questions in for Gary...

GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 1:59:26 PM)
He's a great man and he wins national championships, you can't argue with that. Bottom line. Win ugly baby! Just win!

GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 2:00:26 PM)
The only person I would think of trying on offense would be Bobby Carpenter. I'd love to see him on offense...

onebuck (Oct 23, 2003 2:00:27 PM)
Gary, can you give us an update on possible kicking recruits. Thanks!

GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 2:02:17 PM)
I know they have a serious interest in Justin Kucek as a punter and I don't think think they'll offer a kicker this year. I'm sure there are players they're looking at for both positions but I think they'll just offer a punter if anyone this year.

Kirk (Oct 23, 2003 2:02:25 PM)
Ok we'll have this next one be the last question for Gary

Susan (Oct 23, 2003 2:02:31 PM)
Gary..I know the winning ugly has worked for JT, that can't be denied, but why put himself and the fans through all that anxiety? With the caliber of talent Ohio State recruits on both sides of the ball, there's no reason why Ohio State can't have a high-powered dominating offense to go along with the great special teams and killer defense.

GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 2:06:58 PM)
Amen sister! But you know what they say about a leopard and his spots. JT wouldn't be JT by coaching any other way. Is it a shortfall? To us it is. If he finds enough Ohio kids who really want to play for the Buckeyes it doesn't matter what offense they run. But if he keeps beating Michigan, you or I could be recruited at QB and WR. Just win ugly baby! Fact is...there is enough talent in the pipeline right now to win and win and win over the next three years no matter who they recruit this year. Win ugly baby...just win! I hate the sound of that but that is what it is.

Kirk (Oct 23, 2003 2:08:11 PM)
Ok, thanks Gary for joining us! We'll see you next week.

Susan (Oct 23, 2003 2:08:21 PM)
yes. thanks Gary. GO BUCKS!

GaryHousteau (Oct 23, 2003 2:08:54 PM)
Thanks for your time with me everyone...I hope you get to see a great high school game on Friday and enjoy the rout on Saturday afternoon. I'll talk to you next week. Smile!
