Cincinnatibuck (Oct 31, 2003 3:04:57 PM)
When will the next issue of Bucknuts magazine be mailed? Can't wait to receive.

buckeyemurph (Oct 31, 2003 3:05:19 PM)
Steve, Do you think Gamble will see a lot more playing time on Offense due to the injury to Carter?

Kirk (Oct 31, 2003 3:05:41 PM)
If you mean the UM/OSU issue it should be arriving very soon... watch for it this week I'd say

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 31, 2003 3:05:48 PM)

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:06:27 PM)
We just got a shipment of the issue and it looks great. I'm sure it will arrive in your box any time.

Scoots64 (Oct 31, 2003 3:06:48 PM)
howdy all!!!!!

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:07:13 PM)
Finally, I get to join a chat! I took today off work.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:08:18 PM)
murph, I wouldn't say a lot more time for Gamble, but he might get 10-15 plays, 2-3 catches. His first duty is at CB. Maybe when/if Underwood is healthy, that would increase. But even then how much will E.J. help them, having not played in several weeks. He wasn't playing a whole lot before he got hurt ... and not a knock on E.J., just being realistic. He isn't magically going to play 50 plays.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:09:00 PM)
Welcome Scoots (I'll pump you for bkb. news, VBG) and also to Fighter 59 (works better if you take every Friday off, I find, ha ha)

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:09:24 PM)
Ha! I can't get through the firewall at work.

Mike68 (Oct 31, 2003 3:09:25 PM)
Hello everyone. Hopefully I haven't missed too many of Steve's words of wisdom

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 31, 2003 3:09:37 PM)
Steve, beside Rehring who's brother says he will be at OSU in January is there any other recruits coming in early?

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:09:59 PM)
Why doesn't Bucknuts have practice reports from Biddle anymore?

buckeyemurph (Oct 31, 2003 3:10:35 PM)
Steve, did you gain any confidence in the O-Line performance last week, or was the success due more to the talent level of Indiana?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:10:44 PM)
Cintibuck, I think Freeman would like to and Davis has said wherever he goes he might like to as well. Don't think Ginn will because of track.

Scoots64 (Oct 31, 2003 3:11:09 PM)
Greetings Steve -- Surprise -- Hoops questions -- 1) How do you feel about Jackson-Wilson coming aboard -- 2) How is Obie doing - Will he return this weekend as planned???? -- 3) Anything new on Malik -- 4) Do you think the team will gel soon enough to take the Maui Classic (Dayton could be tough for a team sorta feeling things out)????

Kirk (Oct 31, 2003 3:11:10 PM)
Pittman too... he wanted to enroll early although I'm not totally sure if he

Kirk (Oct 31, 2003 3:11:17 PM)
's still on track to do it

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 3:11:44 PM)
I thought Pittman doesn't have the ACT score to do that yet

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 31, 2003 3:12:05 PM)
I think he re-took test last weekend

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:12:08 PM)
Fighter59, practice reports have ceased because media gets to watch 30 minutes of one practice on Tuesday. There is nothing to see. Everybody wants to know about underclassmen and such, but they are usually wearing other team's jerseys on scout team and you can't even discern who they are. There is really nothing to say. (Unless somebody is hurt, then you can gauge what level of activity they're at, but that's it.)

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:12:17 PM)
Can kids in Ohio skip the last year of high school like Booty did for USC?

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:12:31 PM)
Ok, thanks.

BuckNutty (Oct 31, 2003 3:13:00 PM)
Any chance Roy Hall sees his PT increase? I understand he's behind Jenkins but he seems too talented not to get more time. Maybe he plays more in multiple receiver sets?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:13:14 PM)
murph, yes, I think the O-line can take a lot of positives from that game. It gets a little bit tougher this week, but from what I've seen of PSU, you should be able to run right at them and get 4-5 yards a clip. These 2 games hit them at the right time, IMHO.

hondo (Oct 31, 2003 3:13:16 PM)
Steve, have you heard anything on Hairston lately?

Scoots64 (Oct 31, 2003 3:13:30 PM)
Also a football question -- How is the Oline recruiting coming & who (not already committed) do we have the best chance to land????

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 3:13:39 PM)
With Carter gone, Hall should be our 4th WR. I'd like to see him more, he's been impressive

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:14:00 PM)
I like Hall better than Bam. I love the big WR's.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:15:21 PM)
Scoots, from what I've heard Jackson-Wilson is a comer as a power forward prospect. He can help them. Just asked the basketball SID about O'Brien and he had no news on that. Only news on Malik was the Telep report: OSU and UM in front with Arizona and Okla. angling in, UCLA and Kansas seem out. Probably won't sign early. Yes, I see them winning in Maui. Those tourney restrictions (2 in 4 years or whatever it is) helped because that field is pretty weak.

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 3:15:44 PM)
I love Bam too, but he's a talent you need to work harder to utilize. I'd love to see him alone to the wide side of the field and hit him on a stop. If he beats one man, he has a huge gain, and he usually beats the first guy

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:15:56 PM)
There seems to be a negative feeling toward recruiting on the free board just because we lost Byers. Did anyone really think we had a legit shot? I was just happy we got a visit.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:16:05 PM)
Fighter59, yes, kids can skip last year if they get their final credits (I think senior government may be all they need if everything else is in order).

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 31, 2003 3:16:20 PM)
Watch out fo r the Flyers in Maui.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:17:01 PM)
BuckNutty, yes, Tressel brought up Roy Hall's name. Daniels did as well. Daniels says he gets mad at himself every week for not playing Roy more, but Jenkins is usually in on just about every play. I think when they go 3-wide, you will see more of Roy.

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 3:17:23 PM)
I think a lot of people let their hearts lead their heads on Byars, and they're also still remembering losing Crable/Burgents/McBride last year.

buckeyemurph (Oct 31, 2003 3:17:34 PM)
Steve, I'll put you on the spot and ask if you think we can win out?

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:17:36 PM)

BuckNutty (Oct 31, 2003 3:18:10 PM)
Do yoy think Stan White will perform well Saturday?

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:18:28 PM)
I like our chances of winning out. Our schedule gradually get more difficult, until the pinacle of a trip to Ann Arbor.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:18:31 PM)
hondo, just what I said a moment ago. Dave Telep had a great update earlier in the week on Malik. Said OSU and UM are still up in front, but the kid is kind of fishing around about MSU, Oklahoma and Arizona. UCLA and Kansas have taken other guys and may be out. Kid may not sign early now because of the uncertainty. My feeling is if OB and Stone continue to turn up the heat and get him in for a game where VCA's 19,100 are rocking, they can get him here.

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:19:01 PM)
Turnovers and penaltys are killing us this year!

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:19:30 PM)
If we cut those in half, we're #3 right now in the BCS. . . maybe #2.

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 31, 2003 3:20:04 PM)
Anyone going to check out a playoff game tonight?

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:20:12 PM)
Aren't they tomorrow?

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 3:20:25 PM)
I agree. We had 3 TO's inside the 10 yard line against Indy. In any other game that would've killed us

buckeyemurph (Oct 31, 2003 3:20:32 PM)
I agree with the turnover & penalty problems this year. It seems like every time we get momentum and are driving to score, we either get a stupid penalty or turn the ball over. This has prevented us from burying people this year.

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 3:20:34 PM)
Are there any good ones around Cbus?

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 31, 2003 3:20:42 PM)
D1 tomorrow, but some tonight.

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:21:20 PM)
My alma mater is playing in their first trip to the playoff's ever. Hicksville! They play #1 Columbus Grove. Here's hoping for the upset.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:21:22 PM)
Scoots, well, we can scratch Byers. They'd still love to get Gallimore, but that looks like a 1 in 5 shot. You keep hearing Mitchum from Pa. They'd also love to land Leon Hart from So. Carolina and Jeremy Zuttah from New Jersey. Get them on campus and see, I guess.

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 3:22:23 PM)
Do we know anything about Atkins?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:22:27 PM)
Fighter59, you can't be up or down because they didn't sign some kid from Colorado. Just getting him to visit was a major coup. They took a shot. They are going to do fine. Forget the rankings, fill your needs (and they seem to be doing that).

buckeyemurph (Oct 31, 2003 3:22:54 PM)
Is Brandon Joe back to full strength? I saw him in on a few plays last week and I remember one play where he caught pass out of backfield and rumbled and stumbled for the first down. We need his blocking ability in there.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:23:17 PM)
CintiBuck, oh, I agree completely. When I said I think OSU wins Maui, the key game is obviously Dayton. Are there any ranked teams even in the field? Does anybody know? I'm too busy to stop and check.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:25:08 PM)
murph, can they win out? Yes, of course they can. Nobody left on the schedule is 1995 Nebraska (or some other great dominant team). They will win tomorrow. If they don't, they have serious problems because PSU just isn't very good (in my book). It helps to have MSU and Purdue coming to Ohio Stadium. Then you just take your chance at the Big House. If it happens, it happens. If not, I'm sure it will be worth the trip up there just to see how it unfolds.

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 31, 2003 3:25:35 PM)
Maui Field: Dayton, Ohio State, Chaminade, Central Michigan, Hawii, San Diego State, Santa Clara, Villanova.

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 3:25:38 PM)
Who do people think will win scUM/MSU?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:25:42 PM)
BuckNutty, I'd just like to see Stan Jr. perform. He looked great to me in preseason and hasn't had much of a role since.

buckeyemurph (Oct 31, 2003 3:27:00 PM)
I'm glad to see Donte Whitner coming on. He's been playing great the last couple of games.

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 3:27:16 PM)
I love Whitner, but what happened to Mitchell? He's really disappeared

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:27:24 PM)
dragonknight, tonight Dublin Coffman hosts Marion Harding. And, this may be best first round match-up anywhere tonight when Lick. Valley hosts C-J. I may check that out on my way to Y-town to pick up G-Housteau.

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 3:27:55 PM)
Any big time recruits for Valley or CJ? I know players, but rarely know who they play for

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 3:28:09 PM)
Could I still get tickets anyway?

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 31, 2003 3:28:14 PM)
Ringer (RB) for CJ

Scoots64 (Oct 31, 2003 3:28:31 PM)
Just checked the Maui Classic participants & not teams seem to be ranked although OSu & Dayton show up in the others on a few polls -- JFYI

buckeyemurph (Oct 31, 2003 3:28:35 PM)
The only thing that disturbed me with Mitchell was the fact that he didn't tackle anyone he always tried to make the killer hit instead of wrapping up and making sure tackle.

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 3:29:09 PM)
Nate Salley had the exact same problem early, but he's done much better since. I think that's just an overaggressive inexperienced mistake

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:29:09 PM)
dragonknight, Atkins has visits set with Michigan, USC and FSU. OSU may still get one, but he also likes Miami as well.

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 3:29:59 PM)
So we're outside looking in for Atkins also. We've made everyone's top 5, but it seems like we're going to have trouble landing any of the big OL.

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:30:02 PM)
Salley's playing lights out!

buckeyemurph (Oct 31, 2003 3:30:16 PM)
Is anyone else disappointed in Gamble's performance this year. He wasn't doing anything on punt returns, He has dropped how many interceptions and he seems to be afraid of contact.

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 3:30:32 PM)
He's been huge this year. He still doesn't play the ball well when it's in the air, but other than that he's been awesome.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:30:43 PM)
murph, we can only hope that Joe is ready. You want to see a great FB, watch PSU's McHugh. They missed out on him.

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:30:53 PM)
He's shut down everyone he's covered. Heck no, I'm not disappointed.

Scoots64 (Oct 31, 2003 3:31:10 PM)
I think Gamble has played very strong at corner -- punt returning is another story

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:31:24 PM)
I just hope Pagac keeps playing like he did against IU.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:31:35 PM)
dragonknight, I'm on record as saying UM will win. Just a hunch. MSU has not played a defense like this one, in my opinion, (or the one they'll see next week).

Scoots64 (Oct 31, 2003 3:31:55 PM)
Steve -- does D'andrea move to DE next year???????????

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 31, 2003 3:32:01 PM)
I just like the fact that he is around the ball. I'm used to watching the Bengals CB (Before Tory James) being 10 yards off when receiver catches the ball.

buckeyemurph (Oct 31, 2003 3:32:02 PM)
Steve, speaking of Fullbacks, what do you think of Dionte Johnson pickup? He is a good blocking Fullback

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:32:27 PM)
I've heard people say the D'Andrea has trouble shedding blocks. That's exactly what a DE needs to do.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:32:47 PM)
murph, Gamble has been banged up more than they're letting on. He has played, but they have not publicized the injuries a lot because if they did, the good teams would pick on him even more.

BuckNutty (Oct 31, 2003 3:33:01 PM)
How close are BJ's numbers this year to Groom's last year? He's had a fantastic year.

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:33:10 PM)
Did you guys notice the DB's aren't giving the cushion they were earlier in the year. Maybe they're getting a little more confident.

Scoots64 (Oct 31, 2003 3:33:34 PM)
Not near as much traffic to get thru at DE as there is at ML

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:34:05 PM)
True, plus he can use that speed to get around the OL-man.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:34:40 PM)
Scoots, I don't think D'Andrea moves to DE. I think he plays at MLB and also plays some at OLB. They will have 5 guys for 3 spots with Carpenter, Hawk, D'Andrea, Schlegel and Kerr. DE will be crowded with Kudla, Fraser, Frost, Richardson and Penton.

buckeyemurph (Oct 31, 2003 3:34:40 PM)
Did anyone see the Purdue/Michigan game, was it the fact that Michigan looked that good or Purdue really stunk it up?

Scoots64 (Oct 31, 2003 3:34:51 PM)
plus he does not need to think as much -- just use that talent -- I would love to see him at DE

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:35:15 PM)
murph, I love the Dionte Johnson pickup. Good athlete, born and bred a Buckeye, those guys rarely disappoint.

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 31, 2003 3:35:20 PM)
Just heard that Penn State will be having a pep rally tonight. It's going to take more than this to turn that team around.

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 3:35:33 PM)
He'd have to develop some pass rush moves to be a good DE, and it's hard to tell how long that would take. I'd be willing to bet a ton of cash that he doesn't move, reguardless of whether or not he should. You don't move your returing starter at MLB because someone else may be better, and by the time he would get beaten out, it's too late to switch.

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:35:40 PM)
We need to score early to take the crowd out of the game.

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 31, 2003 3:36:07 PM)
There's still tickets available. Many fans are given up on them.

Scoots64 (Oct 31, 2003 3:36:18 PM)
what about Smith, Matthews, etc. -- D'andrea may never see the middle with Schelgel & Kerr there

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:36:28 PM)
I'm thinking about coming down the C-Bus next weekend for MSU.

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:36:50 PM)
Try my luck on the scalpers market.

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 31, 2003 3:37:29 PM)
I won't ever go to the MSU game again because of what happened last time I went against that opponent.

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 3:37:36 PM)
Smith (i've heard) is moving to DE and Mattews is a WILL, not MLB

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:37:37 PM)
Sander averaging 43.1. Groom averaged 45.0. Sander effective pinning people back just like Groom was.

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:37:45 PM)
I only saw Schlegel play one game for Air Force (ND) he looked fantastic.

BuckNutty (Oct 31, 2003 3:37:59 PM)
I saw that game too Fighter. He did look good.

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 3:37:59 PM)
I saw that game, and he was amaging. Must've had 15 tackles

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:38:21 PM)
AS a sophomore

Mike68 (Oct 31, 2003 3:38:31 PM)
Does anyone else feel that OSU will get some help tomorrow and 2 or 3 of the teams ahead of them in the BCS will lose?

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:38:45 PM)
He and Hawk will be phenominal.

BuckNutty (Oct 31, 2003 3:38:54 PM)
After the O-line and RB, what would you say is our biggest need as far as recruiting goes?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:38:58 PM)
murph, Purdue really stunk it up, and Michigan took full advantage. That's the best game UM has played all year, including ND. Purdue got a turnover at the Mich. 15, down like 14-0 late in the first half and threw a pick. The game was over at that point.

BuckNutty (Oct 31, 2003 3:39:04 PM)
I hope so Mike

Mike68 (Oct 31, 2003 3:39:07 PM)
And Carpenter. I think he will really become big-time next year

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:39:37 PM)
I'd be happy if we won out and went to the Rose Bowl.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:39:54 PM)
Scoots, Smith has been moved to DE, I guess. Matthews is a nice special teams player, but I don't see him that much on defense. He's not a bad player by any means.

Mike68 (Oct 31, 2003 3:40:03 PM)
I'm banking on a ND upset of FSU. ND has never lost (13-0-1) on All Saints day, which is tomorrow.

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 3:40:24 PM)
If Schlagel and Kerr are both such true MLB's, I think it's more likely to see D'andrea move to SAM to compete with Carpenter. Otherwise, our backup there is Freeman probably

Scoots64 (Oct 31, 2003 3:40:31 PM)
Mike -- thats like a Monday nite football stat -- lol

Mike68 (Oct 31, 2003 3:41:03 PM)
I'm digging for things to grasp onto in terms of upsets

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:41:04 PM)
Smith will be difficult to replace. . . Along with Anderson. I'm glad Kudla and Pitcock are getting sig pt.

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 31, 2003 3:41:10 PM)
I'm not given up on him in the middle.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:41:30 PM)
Mike68, there will be some upsets. VT playing at home at night, that's a set-up (just like Wisconsin-OSU was). Can WSU best USC at the Coliseum? They've won there the last 2 times they played and they beat them in Pullman last year. ND no hope vs. FSU, but it sure would be nice. And, yes, I think Florida dings Georgia. Just my thoughts.

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 31, 2003 3:41:42 PM)
Fighter don't forget Patterson.

BuckNutty (Oct 31, 2003 3:41:42 PM)
Freeman is being brought in to play the weak side behind Hawk.

Scoots64 (Oct 31, 2003 3:41:48 PM)
well boyz -- unfortunately work calls -- have a good weekend everyone!!!!!!!!!

Mike68 (Oct 31, 2003 3:42:17 PM)
Steve- Definitely agree w/ you on the VT and FL wins. If we could move up at least two spots in the BCS it would be nice.

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 3:42:27 PM)
Do we have another SAM on the team other than Carpenter then? Bond is a senior I think

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:42:59 PM)
BuckNutty, you are losing a ton of playmaking ability on DL. You need a true impact DE in this class, in my opinion. Plus, they need another lockdown corner (Ginn would be nice, but some think he will actually be aWR at the college level). Maybe another WR (Davis) would be good, too.

BuckNutty (Oct 31, 2003 3:43:00 PM)
Bond is a senior. Has Reggie Smith moved to DE? He's the only other guys I can think of

Mike68 (Oct 31, 2003 3:43:10 PM)
Steve- What have you heard about Maupin? Does he look toget serious PT next year and if so will it be at end or tackle?

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:43:13 PM)
Later scoots

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 3:44:02 PM)
I'd heard rumors of Smith's move and Steve just said he'd heard that, so it looks that way. We have 5 LB's, not even a full 2 deep, and people want to move D'andrea?

BuckNutty (Oct 31, 2003 3:44:12 PM)
I agree on the D-line losing a lot of talent. It's nice to have Patterson, Pitcock, Fraser, Green, Penton, Cotton, Maupin, and Frost all coming back though.

Mike68 (Oct 31, 2003 3:44:44 PM)
Nutty- Don't forget Kudla

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:44:47 PM)
Don't forget Richardson as well

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 31, 2003 3:44:49 PM)
plus Richardson

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:44:56 PM)

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:45:26 PM)
Yeah, if the DL pans out, we'll be fine for a few more years.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:45:29 PM)
Mike68, Heard good things about Maupin. He is a big boy that could play any of the 4 positions. He just needs to settle on one in the spring and make it his.

BuckNutty (Oct 31, 2003 3:45:30 PM)
Thanks Mike and Fighter...that further supports my point. We are loaded on the D-line despite losing Smith, Scott, and Anderson

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 3:45:35 PM)
I've been surprised not to see more of Richardson this year

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:45:47 PM)
CB's kind of a need.

BuckNutty (Oct 31, 2003 3:45:56 PM)
I don't know why I always forget about Kudla. Typed my list too fast I guess

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:46:03 PM)
dragonknight, well, Matthews and Freeman will actually give them 7 scholarship LBs for 3 spots.

Mike68 (Oct 31, 2003 3:46:05 PM)
Wasn't Richardson sick and missed a few early games?

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:46:24 PM)
He played against IU

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:46:33 PM)
Mike68, yes, I believe Richardson was out for a game or 3.

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 31, 2003 3:46:36 PM)
Is Hiley practicing with the defense?

BuckNutty (Oct 31, 2003 3:46:56 PM)
If Gamble leaves like many think we could definitely use another corner. Which side of the ball will Hiley and Gonzalez end up?

Mike68 (Oct 31, 2003 3:46:59 PM)
Does anyone know what the status of Cliff Reynolds is? Haven't heard anything about him since the Spring game

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:47:03 PM)
Wasn't Hiley have some trouble earlier?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:47:03 PM)
No, he and Gonzalez are working mostly on offense. Not sure they get any time on defense. I think they have them slotted as the main receivers on the scout team.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:47:55 PM)
BuckNutty, time will tell. I don't think that has been decided for good on Hiley and Gonzalez. They will go where they're needed. Hiley might like to play both sides like Gamble, but he isn't quite as big (and durable).

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:47:55 PM)
Man didn't Scotty Mac look sharp against IU?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:48:23 PM)
Mike68, if Reynolds is the walk-on who came from the armed services, I heard he called back up, I think.

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:48:30 PM)
5 for 5, and shouldn't had 2 TD's

Mike68 (Oct 31, 2003 3:48:35 PM)
I think Hiley could be a contributor at WR next year will all of his ability. Also, Jordan too, since he and JZ already have played together in HS. I think we'll be better at WR next year than everyone is guesing

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:48:48 PM)
Fighter59, Hiley was hurt to start the year and I think that played a part in the decision to RS him.

BuckNutty (Oct 31, 2003 3:49:12 PM)
Will Curt Lukens be a safety or a LB?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:49:50 PM)
Fighter59, I say this every week, it's great to have Scotty Mac waiting in the wings. He would play at PSU, IU, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, NW, ND and many other places.

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:49:51 PM)
Will Hoobler RS next year? With LI's problem, he may get some early PT?

Mike68 (Oct 31, 2003 3:49:59 PM)
Steve- Is 2/5 shaping up to be the biggest official visit weekend for us?

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 3:50:16 PM)
Oh, good call Nutty, forgot about Lukens. I've heard LB, but he'd be a WILL for size reasons. That would leave Hawk, Matthews, Lukens, and Freeman at WILL. I wonder if Freeman can play elsewhere

Mike68 (Oct 31, 2003 3:50:18 PM)
Meant 12/5, sorry

BuckNutty (Oct 31, 2003 3:50:20 PM)
Hoobler's video is unreal. He will be a great player on either side of the ball

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:50:38 PM)
Mike68, funny story on Hiley. He and Troy Smith are on the same wavelength both from Glenville. Funny to watch in preseason. When Smith was in a jam, he found Supe.

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 3:50:56 PM)
By next year the Irizarry thing will be long over, assuming he's still on the team. However, Hoobler could still be the #3 TE and play immediately

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:51:18 PM)
BuckNutty, yeah, I forgot about Lukens. he gives them 8 LBs. Maybe he moves back to safety, but all they lose there pretty much is Allen.

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:51:20 PM)
Did I hear about Hamby having unreal speed for his size? Why aren't we using him like KWII?

BuckNutty (Oct 31, 2003 3:51:31 PM)
D'Andrea might have to move over behind Carpenter. Other than Reggie Smith I'm not sure who else could play over there. Kerr Maybe?

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 3:51:44 PM)
I think it was Coleman that had the crazy 40 time for his size

Mike68 (Oct 31, 2003 3:51:50 PM)
Don't forget about Arden at TE. he's back playing and he did OK in limited action last year. I hope he can stay straight as I think he could add value to the position

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 3:52:17 PM)
Man, i'm just forgetting guys right and left.

BuckNutty (Oct 31, 2003 3:52:18 PM)
There is a whole lotta talent on the defensive side of the ball, so much it's easy to forget some people.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:52:22 PM)
Fighter59, have to think Hoobler will redshirt. Louis obviously has some issues if what is being reported is the truth. Have to also believe a year from now it will be behind him and he'll be a producer in this offense.

yankee pride (Oct 31, 2003 3:52:31 PM)
Chang of topic any Malik Hairston news or an idea when to expect it?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:52:36 PM)
He and Hamby would give them 2 of the best pass catching TEs around.

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 31, 2003 3:52:43 PM)
Plus Stan White could play TE next year.

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 3:53:05 PM)
If Stan does well at FB I hope he stays there. He's just so short for a TE

Mike68 (Oct 31, 2003 3:53:13 PM)
Leave Stan at FB. I have a feeling that he will become a player there (a ala Matt Keller)

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:53:23 PM)
Fighter59, no idea why Hamby isn't being featured more. Oh, yeah, they don't like to throw the ball (VBG).

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 31, 2003 3:53:38 PM)
He's a lineman.

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:53:51 PM)
Why do we split Hartsock out when we go to a spread? Why not put another WR in that slot?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:53:54 PM)
Mike 68, Arden was working with DL in warmups before Wisconsin game. Maybe he will yo-yo back to TE with Irizarry out.

Mike68 (Oct 31, 2003 3:54:35 PM)
Steve- Do you think that Arden could make any kind of impact at DE or will he just be a special teams guy for the rest of his days?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:55:06 PM)
yankee pride, latest on Hairston was to not expect a quick decision. Signing period is coming up and he might like to visit Oklahoma, Arizona and/or MSU. That can't happen (likely) before period ends, so this may linger through the year. Telep thinks OSU and Michigan are still on the lead lap, but the kid's eyes are bigger than his stomach, apparently.

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 3:55:26 PM)
We split Arden because we're trying to fool the D by going spread without tipping it by bringing in the WR's. It's not a bad idea sometimes, but I think i'd rather bring in a true WR most of the time

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:55:30 PM)
Seems Malik is looking for something better to me.

yankee pride (Oct 31, 2003 3:55:51 PM)
I think the longer it drags the less likely for tOSU

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:56:05 PM)
Fighter59, I'm not sure why they put Hartsock there. He is pretty sure handed and can make tough catches (and does over the middle in that formation).

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:56:13 PM)
Ok, so they put a LB on him. What's the difference?

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:56:43 PM)
It's just a little frustarting with all that talent at WR that's on the bench.

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 31, 2003 3:56:57 PM)
One less LB in the box when Krenzel runs.

BuckNutty (Oct 31, 2003 3:57:13 PM)
I'm with you fighter. It's like when they split Ross or Mo Hall out there. Put Roy Hall or Santonio out there instead. I hear where you coming from

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:57:18 PM)
Great point Cincy.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:57:27 PM)
Mike68, it's hard to make an impact when you're suspended or constantly learning or re-learning a new position. His career is a good battle plan on how not to be a student-athlete. They should show every kid who shows up that timeline. That would open some eyes (although we know they still will screw up from time to time).

Mike68 (Oct 31, 2003 3:57:42 PM)
I loved it last week when they actually threw two screen plays in a row. About fell off of my bar stool. I hope they keep using that play. It is the only thing that will slow down the opponent pass rush

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:58:11 PM)
I love that shovel pass off the option to Hartsock.

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 3:58:17 PM)
I love RB swings and some screens against heavy rushes. We should've done it to Wiscy over and over and over until Hawthorn slowed down

BuckNutty (Oct 31, 2003 3:58:23 PM)
Mike, don't blame the screen calls for you falling off the bar stool. I've never even used that excuse!!

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:58:30 PM)
dragonknight, great point on Hartsock! I never thought of that, but they are fooling the defense by leaving him on the field. If you trot in 2 WRs and trot off the TE and FB, everybody knows what you're doing. Great deceipt by OSU and congrats to you for figuring it out.

Mike68 (Oct 31, 2003 3:58:37 PM)
You got me there Nutty!

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 31, 2003 3:58:48 PM)
I like the shovel pass just not to Hartsock.

yankee pride (Oct 31, 2003 3:58:58 PM)
i Krenzel much better at leading the back to keep momentum upfield last week

BuckNutty (Oct 31, 2003 3:59:08 PM)
I've fallen off a stool or two in my day...

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 3:59:14 PM)
Well, it'd be nice to someone else, but that's who they've been using

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 3:59:18 PM)
Good points as well about occupying an LB to make it easier for the designed draws (which they seem to run once a quarter out of the 5 wide empty set).

Mike68 (Oct 31, 2003 3:59:19 PM)
I wish they would use some of the "trick" plays like the shovel pass and screens in the first two series of games to keep defenses more honest

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 4:00:11 PM)
Two straight flanker screens ... I thought the sky was falling (VBG).

BuckNutty (Oct 31, 2003 4:00:14 PM)
Well I hate to be negative but it's not like they have been doing great things spliiting out tight ends and running backs. I understand the thinking but the results haven't really been there.

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 4:00:29 PM)
I agree mike, but not against PSU necessarily. They're horrible against the run, and I'd love to come out dominating like we did against IU. If we run it down their throat early, we can set the tone

Mike68 (Oct 31, 2003 4:00:38 PM)
Nutty- I fell of the stool too when they actually threw to Schnittker. Tressel totally surprised me last week

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 4:00:43 PM)
What about the formation they used in the spring game? No tackles, a single back, with two WR's split wide and two behind them in a slot.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 4:00:44 PM)
BuckNutty, I agree, I think the deception is fine, but why also deliberately tie your hands when you HAVE to get 8-10 yards?

yankee pride (Oct 31, 2003 4:00:45 PM)
I think Tressel opens it up more against infrior opponents when he knows the game is in hand.Less variation in close games.Like to give future opponents the look to think about.

BuckNutty (Oct 31, 2003 4:01:18 PM)
That's what I was thinking as well, Steve. It's a great idea but it hasn't been terribly successful. Mix it up a bit.

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 4:01:28 PM)
Usually JT, just runs out the clock when we're up. It was nice to see him actually throw the football while we were up

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 4:01:41 PM)
Anything else for me?

BuckNutty (Oct 31, 2003 4:01:43 PM)
That pass from McMullen to San Antonio was a thing of beauty

Mike68 (Oct 31, 2003 4:01:43 PM)
Hopefully he actually uses some of those plays in the last three games to keep the opposing D even more honest

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 31, 2003 4:01:50 PM)
Not this week, he wouldn't do that to Paterno.

yankee pride (Oct 31, 2003 4:02:05 PM)

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 4:02:10 PM)
What game are you going to be at tonight Steve?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 4:02:21 PM)
Trust me, he won't be taking it easy on JoePa. My score was 31-14 tOSU.

Mike68 (Oct 31, 2003 4:02:21 PM)
Steve- Do you see next yr being JoePa's last yr if he has the same kind of season?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 4:02:46 PM)
Fighter59, if I go to a game it would be Licking Valley (20 mins. from my house) against C-J. I want to see if Ringer is for real.

BuckNutty (Oct 31, 2003 4:03:01 PM)
I'm anxious to hear abour Ringer

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 4:03:27 PM)
What! You're missing the Hicksville game. . . oh wait, that's Saturday night.

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 4:03:31 PM)

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 4:03:32 PM)
Mike68, no doubt. Some would like to see him gone now, I'm sure. But one more bad year would be 4 losing seasons out of 5. It can't go on.

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 4:03:47 PM)
Me too. Steve, where exactly is Licking Valley?

BuckNutty (Oct 31, 2003 4:03:52 PM)
I just hope he goes out on his own terms. He's earned it

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 4:04:05 PM)
Is that a sexaul question Bucknutty?

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 4:04:18 PM)
Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Mike68 (Oct 31, 2003 4:04:21 PM)
No offense to Iggy fans out there but I would love to see Glenville win for the simple fact that Ginn Sr has done so much for that program that it would be a nice thing to happen to such a good guy

BuckNutty (Oct 31, 2003 4:04:36 PM)
Um, it wasn't intended to be...

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 4:04:39 PM)
Go out East Broad Street from Columbus, it becomes Route 16, follow it through Newark about 5 miles east of town. Look for the turnoff for the school and the lights on the left. Can't miss it. There is a stop light and you turn left.

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 4:04:50 PM)
The more and more I hear about Ginn, the more respect I have for him

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 4:05:09 PM)
Awesome. If I can get someone to go with me, I may show up

BuckNutty (Oct 31, 2003 4:05:16 PM)
CatFan will have a cow if Glenville beats Iggy. Go Tarblooders!!!

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 4:05:16 PM)
Mike and Fighter, I agree. This is David (if you could just see this school and the things they have to work with/through) against Goliath.

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 31, 2003 4:05:29 PM)
Same here Mike. I'm sick of hearing about St. I's when they can't beat the teams from Cincinnati they play.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 31, 2003 4:06:02 PM)
Anything else?

Mike68 (Oct 31, 2003 4:06:09 PM)
Go Bucks

Cincinnatibuck (Oct 31, 2003 4:06:12 PM)
Have a safe trip.

dragonknight (Oct 31, 2003 4:06:20 PM)
Nothing pressing. Thanks for stopping by

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 4:06:32 PM)
Thanks for all the input Steve. Bucknuts is blessed to have you.

BuckNutty (Oct 31, 2003 4:06:39 PM)
Thanks Steve!

Fighter59 (Oct 31, 2003 4:06:52 PM)
I get a lot less work done since you've joined.

Mike68 (Oct 31, 2003 4:07:05 PM)
Me too Fighter 59
