Chat Transcript - Gary Housteau

We have a chat transcript posted now of today's club chat with Gary Housteau. Gary talked about Maurice Clarett, Fred Davis, Michael Massey, Ted Ginn, and much more.

GaryHousteau (Nov 6, 2003 1:01:50 PM)
Hi everyone...I'm ready for any Buckeye questions you may have!

GaryHousteau (Nov 6, 2003 1:03:22 PM)
First...I just spoke to Ted Ginn Sr., smile, and Ted Jr. has his official visits lined up. Michigan, of course, on the Big Weekend at the Big House. Ohio State on Dec. 5. USC on the 12 and Miami on the 19th.

gibz (Nov 6, 2003 1:02:07 PM)
Gary, what chances do you think the Bucks have of running the table?

GaryHousteau (Nov 6, 2003 1:04:34 PM)
Hi Gibz...I like our chances a lot. I think we're the better team in all three games. And JT has Carr's number obviously. He'll be 3-0 against the Wolverines.

SmellyCat (Nov 6, 2003 1:02:59 PM)
Gary-Why does Gary Russell have ZERO offers? Grades? One would think that a player of the year even with grade concerns would get a few offers.

GaryHousteau (Nov 6, 2003 1:06:23 PM)
Hi SmellyCat...I'm not very knowledgeable on Gary Russell other than what I've been told by people who have seen him play or played or coached against him. I'm waiting on tape because I haven't seen him in person. His academic status must be similar to Ray Williams and everybody is just biding their time with him. I can't really say...sorry.

jackmatevans (Nov 6, 2003 1:03:54 PM)
Gary, what is the latest on Massey?

GaryHousteau (Nov 6, 2003 1:08:55 PM)
Hi Jackmatevans...my undercurrent with Massey tells me he is a Maize and Blue lean. I'm sure if Iggy loses this week, he may go to see his brother play the final two weeks, which will include Michigan and OSU. I look for Mentor to knock off Iggy but you can never count Chuck Kyle out.

MiniBus (Nov 6, 2003 1:09:03 PM)
Any new updates on Mario Manningham and how he feels about OSU?

GaryHousteau (Nov 6, 2003 1:13:13 PM)
I intend to go to the Harding-Ed's game on my home from OSU this weekend so I'll get a first-hand update from Mario and some other people about his situation. I'll still stick with the 50-50 OSU/Michigan scenario. I do think Manningham will be the first major, can't-lose recruit that gets away unless JT kicks it up a notch next year on offense...and that's not ever going to happen. Especially with a new QB and a new offensive line. Can you say "really conservative?" Manningham is really, really good. He had another great game against Solon. He makes so many fantastic plays as a receiver that touches the ball only a few times a game.

stemmshady (Nov 6, 2003 1:13:38 PM)
Gary, since it doesn't look like Delbert Ferguson is headed to OSU, where do you think he goes? Do you think Ray Williams ends up here? I had a chance to see him recently and I was very, very impressed.

GaryHousteau (Nov 6, 2003 1:18:00 PM)
Hi stem...as you probably know I've been a big proponent of Williams for a long time and I continue to take that position. He impresses me every time I see him, even when he doesn't have a great game like against Southeast in the first round. I sure hope Williams somehow becomes a Buckeye. I've heard from a good source that OSU is still interested but must be waiting to see some academic progress. I say heck with the progress and give him an offer and worry about him later. I haven't talked to Delbert in a while and I know he was feeling pretty low after the injury, but I'm sure he will bounce back and end up on his feet. I can't say where he might end up at this point because a lot of the schools that were on him have backed out. I'll talk to him soon I'm sure. Nothing going on for Delbert right now. It's a shame!

Susan (Nov 6, 2003 1:18:14 PM)
Have you spoken to Freddie Davis or Coach Rios?

stemmshady (Nov 6, 2003 1:18:16 PM)
Gary, where do you think all of this Fred Davis and USC noise originated? He'll be a buckeye I'm sure, but why would anyone get this idea?

Buckeye98 (Nov 6, 2003 1:18:34 PM)
Gary, any thoughts on Davis and Ginn and USC....? If you already answered this, just say yes or no as to whether you are still as confident as you have been. Thanks

GaryHousteau (Nov 6, 2003 1:22:58 PM)
Hi Susan...My position on Davis going to OSU hasn't changed. I've had him as a Freeman, Davis and Ginn lock since May. I'm sure I'll talk to Coach Rios this Saturday at the game. He hasn't returned my call or email though, but he has responded vaguely on the free message board. Again, from talking to other people, I'm still certain that Davis and Ginn are OSU locks. I'll confirm it another time this weekend about Davis. Ginn on the other hand is not even worth discussing. He has another big national award coming down and I don't want to steal his thunder so watch out for a major one coming for Ginn. I'm sure there will be many more. He'll likely be everyone's national player of the year and I sure hope Ohio voters think he's the best in our state.

worthabuck (Nov 6, 2003 1:23:09 PM)
The lines makers obviously like us this week considering the fact that were hardly be anyone by 7 points, as the media continually points out.

GaryHousteau (Nov 6, 2003 1:26:00 PM)
Michigan State is for pretenders. OSU covers in the Shoe, as long as McMullen gets to play big-time minutes. I'm sorry but Krenzel is so limited in his skills that it can be any more obvious even to the biggest CK backers. Bring on the Gunslinger! Go Scottie Mac! Go Bucks!

jackmatevans (Nov 6, 2003 1:26:04 PM)
Gary, what are you hearing about Braxton and do you think he ends up at OSU.

GaryHousteau (Nov 6, 2003 1:30:31 PM)
I still think that Braxton ends up a Buckeye by default. But that's just a gut feeling. Again, I've seen Braxton play many times in person, especially last year, and I've never been blown away by him in anyway. I've never even seen the junior year that people continue to talk about him having and I was on the sideline for many Ursuline games last year following Irizarry and Ferguson. I just think the upside is there but he needs such a transformation mentally to even have a chance of him making it big in any way. I wish him well because he's a local kid, first and foremost, but I've never seen the kind of production from him that others have. I'll take him with a 24th or 25th scholarship though.

worthabuck (Nov 6, 2003 1:30:44 PM)
Gary is there any senior, that has really excelled this year, that was not in the recruiting picture before the year started?

GaryHousteau (Nov 6, 2003 1:35:53 PM)
If Mitchum counts, then I'll say him. Daryll Clark from Ursuline had a great year and I wish him well. Clark is not an OSU prospect however. His pass-catching mate Derrick Stewart, a junior last year, should be one of the top-rated players in Ohio next year. Stewart is a fantastic offensive weapon and a pretty good track player as well. Watch for him. I guess Hoyer is another player that performed better than most thought he would this year. I think he'll be a big-timer at MSU, that's just a gut feeling after watching him a few times this year. Again he has no shot of changing his mind and becoming a Buckeye.

Susan (Nov 6, 2003 1:36:26 PM)
Do you think Craig Krenzel's arm is still giving him problems? It seems he hasn't been himself since the injury.

BuckeyeDave (Nov 6, 2003 1:36:28 PM)
Gary - Do you think either Krenzel or McMullin will play pro? Is McMullen getting enough playing time to get a look by pro scouts?

GaryHousteau (Nov 6, 2003 1:40:42 PM)
How can you speak negatively about a national championship quarterback? I think Krenzel gives you all he can every week and the results are pretty obvious. It just goes to show you it's JT's philosophy/system that wins national titles and not necessarily the talent he has to work with. I hate to admit that fact. I dream of what it would be like to have a Phillip Rivers-type under center. I think Zwick will move us more in that direction but Tressel will handcuff him I'm certain. As far as either CK or SM going pro.....No!

buckeyefan47 (Nov 6, 2003 1:40:54 PM)
gary, hey buddie i'm a little late, so I am sorry if this was asked, but how is ross coming along with his injury and can he keep up his streak of 100 yd. games?

GaryHousteau (Nov 6, 2003 1:45:02 PM)
It's time to get serious about Ross. Sure Indiana and Penn State were good games for him but if you saw Chris Perry against the Spartans, then you have to expect Ross will have a similar fortune...why not??? So I'm sure he'll shake off whatever little injury that's bother him and I expect him to log another 100-yard performance plus this week. It's time for his Jonathan Wells impersonation to really kick in this week. Ross needs to step it up a notch this week at home and make believers out of all of us.

buckeyefan47 (Nov 6, 2003 1:45:15 PM)
gary what is your gut feeling about MoC? is he coming back? are do you see him in the rear view mirror?

GaryHousteau (Nov 6, 2003 1:50:02 PM)
Again, I haven't spoken publicly very much about Reecie, or even Louis, because I don't want people that know me to stop giving me information. I personally think however, that Clarett would love to have one more year at OSU. I've been privy to a lot of Clarett information and I will tell you for sure around Christmas time if Clarett will ever be a Buckeye again or not. For those of you who know, I alerted those of us over at BSB that this whole Clarett fiasco was about to come down and I can tell you that December will be a big month in determining whether Clarett will even have a chance to ever don the scarlet and gray again. That's the most that I can say right now.

SmellyCat (Nov 6, 2003 1:50:37 PM)
Gary-Is there much of a chance that Troy Smith gets a shot at the QB job next year? Seems Zwick has already been informly annointed.

GaryHousteau (Nov 6, 2003 1:52:48 PM)
Zwick will be the main man but slash will have an ever-evolving role with the offense, including taking snaps under center. But don't tell Smith that! He'll fight tooth and nail to be the number one signal caller at OSU next year, I'm certain of that, but Zwick will be up to the challenge.

jackmatevans (Nov 6, 2003 1:52:56 PM)
Gary, have you talked to Louis recently and what is his status?

GaryHousteau (Nov 6, 2003 1:57:26 PM)
I've spoken to his people, yes, and I/we should know a lot more about his future after today. Again, I like to stay outside the lines when it comes to players that I'm well-connected with. I don't condone what he "allegedly" did or what happened in any way but I hope that things go well for Louis from this point on and he can rebound from this.

worthabuck (Nov 6, 2003 2:00:36 PM)
I know that you were not that high on Datish coming out of high school. Was it because he couldn't pass block? Is he a quality run blocker? Since opponents have never seen him, do you think they could use him as a back-up on running plays? I can't imagine that they could pick up on it any more than some of the offensive sets that pretty much tell the other team that we are going to run off tackle.

GaryHousteau (Nov 6, 2003 2:04:16 PM)
Korey Stringer destroyed kids in high school. He was a no-doubter. He was a b***h! Neither Datish nor Braxton have shown me anything even close to that on the high school level. I know that's a high bar, but that's the level you need to be at to be successful at The Ohio State University. I saw all three of these aforementioned guys play on more than a couple of occasions in high school. I hope Datish and even Braxton develop into that kind of a player, but they started way behind a player like Stringer who was the best O-lineman I've seen play in high school. Didn't see Pace in person.

Kirk (Nov 6, 2003 2:05:51 PM)
We're going to let Gary go now... thanks for the chat Gary! I'll keep you all posted on whether or not we have a chat with Steve tomorrow; he's a bit under the weather.

GaryHousteau (Nov 6, 2003 2:07:47 PM)
Thanks everyone. Forget about all of the noise coming from the left coast about Davis. It's all noise. Sure he loved it out there but he's a Drushawn Humphrey Buckeye! Give him number 6 at OSU and watch him go. BTW Ginn will be at OSU this weekend for the MSU game. Go Bucks!
