Seabus (Nov 7, 2003 3:09:03 PM)
With MSU banged up defensively, will we be able to run the ball like the past two weeks??

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:09:56 PM)
Seabus, yes, I think Michigan proved MSU is vulnerable to the run. OSU should sustain its rushing success, provided Ross stays upright.

buckaholic (Nov 7, 2003 3:10:23 PM)
Steve, this Fred Davis thing, I think we know the answer, but is it of any concern to us with USC?

Susan (Nov 7, 2003 3:12:30 PM)
Steve, speaking of the Fred Davis thing, do you think Tressel's conservative offensive philosphy will hurt OSU down the road in regards to top offensive recruits..esp..wr's and qb's?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:12:32 PM)
buckaholic, well, anytime you hear whispers that somebody has said they will end up there, it is a concern. I think USC is a threat, no doubt. They throw the ball. They're No. 2 in the country with a young QB.

Hubbard (Nov 7, 2003 3:12:40 PM)
So what are you hearing that happened to Estes?

wizzle (Nov 7, 2003 3:13:28 PM)
It souds like we have a decent chance w/ Leon Hart as well

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:13:42 PM)
Susan, it could. But the thing is when they get these guys on campus they show them that there is more to football than yards and catches and all that stuff. This is a family. That is for some guys and not for some others., Ultimately, I go with the prevailing wisdom that Davis joins Freeman and Ginn and everybody else who counts in the family.

BuckNutty (Nov 7, 2003 3:13:48 PM)
I just hope Hart was watching the Gamecocks last night...they looked awful!

Nate Salley (Nov 7, 2003 3:14:24 PM)
The thing I dont understand with Davis and Ginn that if they are so Pro- Osu then why dont they give them a little more love in the national media, you never know it could sway the opinion of other big name recruits.

Hubbard (Nov 7, 2003 3:14:50 PM)
Nate then you may not get to take teh trips?

BuckNutty (Nov 7, 2003 3:14:58 PM)
would you say defensively the key to the game on Saturday is tacking and eliminating yards after the catch?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:15:14 PM)
Hubbard, you got my on Estes. Maybe I'm loopy, but give me a position and first name.

wizzle (Nov 7, 2003 3:15:33 PM)
Randy Estes

Hubbard (Nov 7, 2003 3:15:44 PM)
Oh...uhh I forget his first name, but the safety from Cali, some said he was teh best DB prospect on the west coasst last year

Nate Salley (Nov 7, 2003 3:15:56 PM)
I guess I have always been under the attitude if you truly know where you want to end up then commit early, and start helping with the recruiting ala Zwick

Hubbard (Nov 7, 2003 3:15:58 PM)
he got suspended from his school

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:16:19 PM)
wizzle, I agree., to get Hart on campus will be a big coup. Auburn, South Carolina and Virginia are also thick in the running.

BuckNutty (Nov 7, 2003 3:16:33 PM)
I understand where your coming from Nate. No matter what happens on the field I'll always appreciate what Zwick did during his recruitment.

BuckNutty (Nov 7, 2003 3:16:57 PM)
I just broke the your, you're rule...sorry.

Nate Salley (Nov 7, 2003 3:17:06 PM)
I guess you cant always have the ideal situation, and just be happy when they do commit

wizzle (Nov 7, 2003 3:17:11 PM)
with concern to Hart, every time I have seen him quoted by the media, it seems that O State seems to be the first school out of his mouth

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:18:13 PM)
wizzle, that seems consistent to what I've seen, too. They have a definite need on the OL.

BuckNutty (Nov 7, 2003 3:18:19 PM)
There are worse places Hart could go. You'd think one of these blue chip oos lineman would have to see the light. Hopefully Hart is the guy.

wizzle (Nov 7, 2003 3:18:26 PM)
Also, how big of pull does Freeman have on getting Davis and Ginn to land in C-bus

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:19:02 PM)
BuckNutty, yes, it's time. Everybody was excited about Bishop and Morris and others from out-of-state (Hopkins and others). It's time to get one from OOS that really pans out BIG.

Nate Salley (Nov 7, 2003 3:20:42 PM)
I really thought Byers was the guy I never thought he would go somewhere flashy like USC... I always thought of him as sort of a blue collar guy

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:20:53 PM)
wizzle, I think it helps. They are all friends. Ultimately, it will come down to where Davis and Ginn are most comfortable. I think they all end up here. But track may be better for Ginn on West Coast. Davis may like the offense better at USC. I think they buy into the family atmosphere at OSU, though.

BuckNutty (Nov 7, 2003 3:21:01 PM)
I was thinking the same thing about Byers, Nate.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:21:13 PM)
Nate, I agree. That pick kind of stunned me. But USC is a good, private school.

Nate Salley (Nov 7, 2003 3:21:28 PM)
Guess we were all wrong

BuckNutty (Nov 7, 2003 3:21:29 PM)
Do you think CK is the kind of guy who will raise his game in light of all the McMullen should start talk?

wizzle (Nov 7, 2003 3:22:00 PM)
If there is one consistent about CK, it's that he rises to the occasion

Seabus (Nov 7, 2003 3:22:05 PM)
Yeah, how is the QB situation going to play out in your opinion Steve??

buckaholic (Nov 7, 2003 3:22:06 PM)
Steve, do you have any idea just how confident the Hoops staff might be about Malik despite his not making it down tonight?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:22:10 PM)
BuckNutty, if he isn't, he better become that kind of guy quickly. JT has given him plenty of rope here, but he will not be afraid to pull the trigger. I think he will do just fine.

wizzle (Nov 7, 2003 3:22:14 PM)
I don't seem Krenzel having any problem doing it here

wizzle (Nov 7, 2003 3:22:18 PM)
he is a bulldog

Nate Salley (Nov 7, 2003 3:23:10 PM)
its sad to say that I almost feel more comfortable with McMullen right now, he really just gives us that spark we need

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:24:29 PM)
Seabus, I think both will play. Krenzel will start and McMullen may get a series in the first half. Then they will go from there. I assume Scott would play if they're trying to make a comeback and Craig will play if they're trying to preserve a lead.

Nate Salley (Nov 7, 2003 3:25:08 PM)
I am sick of preserving leads, for once I would like to extend a lead

Seabus (Nov 7, 2003 3:25:17 PM)
McMullen has played head and shoulders above Krenzel in both NW and Penn St. Tressel is doing the right thing giving Craig one more chance here to perform, but McMullen just seems to work better with the type of offensive team we have.

BuckNutty (Nov 7, 2003 3:26:30 PM)
I think Coach has handled the QB situation perfectly. The time for CK to step up is here because I'm not sure how he'll justify not playing McMullen more if this trend continues.

wizzle (Nov 7, 2003 3:26:43 PM)
the Running game controls everything, establish a running game, the air attack is not as needed, therefore Krenzel is the guy you want. However if the running game is lackluster, Mcmullen will be the man who will be able to take the offense and move the sticks

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:26:52 PM)
buckaholic, well, this hurts. The signing period starts Wed. You can be sure they will be bracing against the worst that he visits UM, loves it and signs with them this week. They just have to sweat this one out.

buckaholic (Nov 7, 2003 3:27:16 PM)
yeah, Joe Crawford is our ace in the hole

OTC (Nov 7, 2003 3:27:48 PM)
what is the deal with joe, some people say he is about to re up with michigan while others say now it is looking like uk?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:28:16 PM)
OTC, that kid changes his mind like the wind blows.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:28:57 PM)
wizzle, I agree, running game will be the key. It will be cold (mid-40s) so running game must come to forefront.

wizzle (Nov 7, 2003 3:29:08 PM)
Steve, based on your observations thus far, how would you say the talent in Ohio's juniors compares to that of previous classes

Susan (Nov 7, 2003 3:29:34 PM)
is their rain in the forecast for tomorrow...40's I can handle..but 40's with rain...yuck

tipdogusaf (Nov 7, 2003 3:29:45 PM)
Steve, Do you think haw or pittman can step next year and help out the running game?

Nate Salley (Nov 7, 2003 3:29:50 PM)
Has anyone heard anything about this kid named Samson Taylor, running back from texas, his physical stats are rediculous, but no one seams to be offering

Seabus (Nov 7, 2003 3:29:51 PM)
Steve any gut feeling on the Spartans?? Another sweat it out, win 17-10 game or something more positive??

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:31:02 PM)
wizzle, kirk did a story for the next Bucknuts The Magazine. In that article, he lays out that the junior crop could be better than the senior crop. There are some keepers there with Boone, O'Neal, Denlinger from Troy, Mannigham, Hight from McKinley. They all had great junior years (except O'Neal, who was limited to 4 games by red tape BS).

BuckNutty (Nov 7, 2003 3:31:14 PM)
Nate, Taylor used to live in Florida and has said he will commit on the spot if Miami offers. He does play for the #1 school in Texas though. I'm not sure how much interest there.

wizzle (Nov 7, 2003 3:31:37 PM)
Seabus, I hope that O St. steps it up against the spartans b/c I see it as our easiest game the rest of the year

wizzle (Nov 7, 2003 3:31:49 PM)
thanks steve

Duffy's boys (Nov 7, 2003 3:31:49 PM)
I've heard Hight has more academic problems, a shame since he only played one game in 2002, have you heard anything Steve?

Nate Salley (Nov 7, 2003 3:31:58 PM)
Have we showed interest in him

BuckNutty (Nov 7, 2003 3:32:30 PM)
He doesn't have an offer but he has mentioned OSU. I suppose time will tell.

Nate Salley (Nov 7, 2003 3:32:39 PM)
guess so

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:32:41 PM)
Susan, high of 43, no chance of rain (what a shock after this crappy season).

Susan (Nov 7, 2003 3:32:56 PM)
Steve, looking ahead, who do project on the offensive line and any feel as to how good, bad or mediocre the 2004 oline will be

Nate Salley (Nov 7, 2003 3:33:18 PM)
Steve, could you venture to guess how prospects we can expect in this class

Nate Salley (Nov 7, 2003 3:33:24 PM)
how many sorry

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:35:12 PM)
tipdogusaf, I really like Haw. I think he can help next year. He has good vision, nice body lean. I like the way he does it.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:35:47 PM)
Seabus, yes, I say OSU 24-21 in a sweat-it-out tight one (do they play any other kind?)

buckmark (Nov 7, 2003 3:35:54 PM)
Steve, there is of course a lot of talk nationally about the lack of offense and the reality that Tress will always play this way. Do you see that as an eventual negative in the recruiting battles?

BuckNutty (Nov 7, 2003 3:36:39 PM)
Do you like the idea of having a large number of recruits in on the same weekend? (Dec 5th) Will there be enough time to talk to all of them individually and spend enough time with them all?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:36:41 PM)
Hight has been to at least one OSU game. It's early in the game. He has 3 semesters left to get academics in order. It can be done.

wizzle (Nov 7, 2003 3:38:41 PM)
Does anyone have a legitimate guess on how long Irizarry will be out?

buckmark (Nov 7, 2003 3:38:46 PM)
Good question Bucknutty...the same occured to me. The flip side is a lot of these guys being together and dreaming of the possibilities!

Susan (Nov 7, 2003 3:39:01 PM)
Bucknutty...having a big group on hand together could be a plus, also. Some of them might get to know one and other and decide to come to OSU together making it a top class

BuckNutty (Nov 7, 2003 3:39:24 PM)
I suppose there are pros and cons.

wizzle (Nov 7, 2003 3:39:26 PM)
I feel that it's always a good thing when top recruits see other top recruits at OSU

buckmark (Nov 7, 2003 3:39:34 PM)
wizzle.. everything I hear on Irizarry is the rest of the year

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:39:52 PM)
Susan, the OL will take on a different tack in 2004. It won't be quite as sedentary. Should have more athleticism and there will be plenty of bodies. I bet you see a lot of experimentation. We know Sims at LT and Mangold at C will be the anchors. I see Olds at LG, Kne at RG or RT and then you need to find a fifth guy from Downing, Barton, Coleman, Datish, Schafer, Tyree and the 4-5 newbies (Person, Rehring, Skinner and, possibly, Braxton or Mitchum or Gallimore or Hart or somebody else).

Susan (Nov 7, 2003 3:40:03 PM)
yes. plus if there is a "zwick" in the group..it's a great opportunity for him to get the others phone no's and email addys

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:40:30 PM)
Nate, OSU will sign right aroudn 25, maybe more if guys like Gamble and Reecie are definitely gone.

wizzle (Nov 7, 2003 3:41:31 PM)
Speaking of Mitchum, I feel good about the bucks landing him ]

Nate Salley (Nov 7, 2003 3:41:44 PM)
Steve, do you think that next years OL will be improved from this year's

Susan (Nov 7, 2003 3:41:46 PM)
Gary said yesterday that December will be crucial as to whether Reecie returns to OSU next year or not. He didn't elaborate. Do you know what he means? Is the NFL trial scheduled for December?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:41:56 PM)
buckmark, yes, other schools will use it against Ohio State. But they have a national title and family atmosphere to sell.

wizzle (Nov 7, 2003 3:43:10 PM)
Yeh not to mention the fact that we send around 4 players out of each class to the Pros

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:43:23 PM)
BuckNutty, yes, I like it because they can really make the hard sell that weekend and put all of their energry into that. Hopefully, it will come on the wake of a Michigan win and sealing of at least a Rose Bowl bid. Yes, there will be time to see them all individually. JT is a master of details like that and Conley is as well. They run them through there like an assembly line.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:44:45 PM)
wizzle, it never came up at Tuesday's luncheon because nobody likes to be the one to ask a tough question before the whole group (and that's the only way JT takes 'em these days ... and can you blame him?). I would think it will be sometime in April 2004 before you see him between the lines playing for OSU.

Seabus (Nov 7, 2003 3:45:18 PM)
To me, it's tough to believe a big time DE prospect would not want to line up for the Bucks this year. After watching how dominant they were in the Fiesta bowl, how many linemen get to play, and how many seniors we have, you would think we would be fighting them off.

Nate Salley (Nov 7, 2003 3:46:05 PM)
Why is there such a harsh penalty against louis football players get in fights all the time, am I missing something her

Nate Salley (Nov 7, 2003 3:46:08 PM)

Susan (Nov 7, 2003 3:46:28 PM)
Steve is Louis practicing and will he be on the sidelines(not in uniform) for the home games?

wizzle (Nov 7, 2003 3:47:13 PM)
Nate I think you are missing something, he is a big time prospect and as well all know, things get blown out of proportion when it comes to big time names

Nate Salley (Nov 7, 2003 3:48:04 PM)
Is he any bigger than Carpenter and Hawk they got into a fight last year, and know of multiple fights that Pagac has gotten into

BuckNutty (Nov 7, 2003 3:48:53 PM)
I hear what you're saying Nate...there must be more to the story we don't know about.

wizzle (Nov 7, 2003 3:48:56 PM)
i'm not quite sure, as far as that subject goes, i'm sure that you would know more than I do

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:49:05 PM)
Hey, I got booted. Last question I saw was Nate's about OL next year. I'd say they have a chance to better next year and possibly do more things offensively (get outside, like everybody seems to be clamoring). They should have depth. Please repost any ??? I missed.

Susan (Nov 7, 2003 3:49:43 PM)
Nate I think Tressel is the kind of guy who doesn't have a set list of punishments for "X" transgressions. I think he looks at the individual circumstance, weighs everything that happened and decides on the punishment from there

BuckNutty (Nov 7, 2003 3:49:53 PM)
Isn't the key to stopping MSU tackling well after they make the catch? For this reason I'm feeling good about the game tomorrow.

Susan (Nov 7, 2003 3:50:12 PM)
Steve, I asked if Louis is practicing and will he be on the sidelines (out of uniform) for the last two home games?

Nate Salley (Nov 7, 2003 3:50:35 PM)
I agree with that approach, but taking away the rest of his season seems a little harsh.

Susan (Nov 7, 2003 3:51:20 PM)
I agree, too, Nate...but there could be some things that happened that we don't know about.

wizzle (Nov 7, 2003 3:51:21 PM)
I agree Nate

Nate Salley (Nov 7, 2003 3:51:43 PM)
Agreed Susan

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:51:50 PM)
BuckNutty, I agree. And, other than Shabaj, I don't see a whole lot of breakaway threats. The big threats will catch the ball, then need dragged down.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:52:35 PM)
Susan, I think he is practicing on the scout team. Again, JT has not addressed it publically. No idea if he'll be in uniform or not.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:52:52 PM)
Susan, is there a tailgate tomorrow a.m.?

Susan (Nov 7, 2003 3:53:01 PM)
I'm thinking he won't be in uniform..i was wondering if he's allowed on the sidelines for the games..

Susan (Nov 7, 2003 3:53:08 PM)
yes..i'll be in my usual location

Susan (Nov 7, 2003 3:53:24 PM)
oh..and steve..if the purdue kickoff is 3:30..i'm cooking perch next week..

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:53:26 PM)
No, he won't be in pads. Maybe he'll be there with the uniform shirt on. Maybe street clothes. I do not know.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:53:42 PM)
Ahhhh, perch. We need an OSU and Purdue win this week.

Susan (Nov 7, 2003 3:53:57 PM)
Don't be late.

Nate Salley (Nov 7, 2003 3:53:59 PM)
Steve do think this years bball team can contend for the Big Ten title

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:54:00 PM)
I will try and stop by in the morning.

BuckNutty (Nov 7, 2003 3:54:09 PM)
A Purdue win would be better than an Iowa win Saturday?

Susan (Nov 7, 2003 3:54:11 PM)

Seabus (Nov 7, 2003 3:54:19 PM)
Thanks for the chat all, OSU 17-6 over Sparty. Have fun screaming to stay warm.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:54:33 PM)
Nate, yes, certainly. I'll know more in about 6 hours. But I like this team. Sounds like it has already jelled.

Nate Salley (Nov 7, 2003 3:54:39 PM)
bye seabus

Susan (Nov 7, 2003 3:54:46 PM)
bye seabus

Nate Salley (Nov 7, 2003 3:55:07 PM)
Have you seen JJ play in practice at all

Susan (Nov 7, 2003 3:55:10 PM)
Are you going to the bball game tonight?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:55:15 PM)
BuckNutty, I just say that from the standpoint of getting next week's game on ABC at 3:30 (so Susan can cook perch ... ha ha). Really, it doesn't matter who wins the other games. OSU has to win out.

BuckNutty (Nov 7, 2003 3:55:29 PM)
Wen't right over my head...my bad!

Susan (Nov 7, 2003 3:55:29 PM)
Steve missed the perch last year..got there too late..

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:55:44 PM)
Nate, practices are closed. Saw him at summer league. He's legit. Yes, Suze, provided my meds hold up, I will be at VCA tonight.

Susan (Nov 7, 2003 3:56:04 PM)
meds? are you sick?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:56:29 PM)
Yes, had fever all week temps 101 and worst headaches ever. Now I know what migraines are like. Wow.

wizzle (Nov 7, 2003 3:56:34 PM)
J.J. looked preety good when he played at Arkansas

Susan (Nov 7, 2003 3:56:52 PM)
Sorry to hear that. Feel better soon.

wizzle (Nov 7, 2003 3:56:57 PM)
Not to mention how spectacular he looked when he played our high school every year

Nate Salley (Nov 7, 2003 3:57:13 PM)
where did you go wizzle?

wizzle (Nov 7, 2003 3:57:23 PM)
Dublin Coffman

Nate Salley (Nov 7, 2003 3:57:32 PM)
really so did I

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:57:34 PM)
quote from J.J.'s mom "My boy loves to play basketball. I know when he's happy, he smiles. He smiles when he play basketball. I want to see that when he comes out there before the people for the first time at Ohio State."

BuckNutty (Nov 7, 2003 3:57:54 PM)
I got Rush's maid on speed dial if you're interested! lol

Nate Salley (Nov 7, 2003 3:58:04 PM)
what year wizzle

buckmark (Nov 7, 2003 3:58:05 PM)
Susan, I'll be up for next week's game...Purdue! see you then.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 3:58:07 PM)
suze, I am getting better. I'm back to about 80 percent.

wizzle (Nov 7, 2003 3:58:20 PM)
I'm a sophomore in college this year

tipdogusaf (Nov 7, 2003 3:58:20 PM)
Steve, do you feel that we have a good chance at winning the next 3 games?

Nate Salley (Nov 7, 2003 3:58:33 PM)
yea i graduated in 01

hey im a coffmanner too

wizzle (Nov 7, 2003 3:59:42 PM)
it's like a reunion in here

Nate Salley (Nov 7, 2003 3:59:42 PM)
alot of alumni today

buckmark (Nov 7, 2003 3:59:46 PM)
will do!

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 4:00:01 PM)
tipdogusaf, I like Ohio State to win this game and next week against Purdue, but the Boilers have the best combo of pass game, run game and defense OSU may see this year. That worries me. Then you just go to Ann Arbor and take your chances. They have just blistered Purdue and MSU, taking this week off and then play NW as a tune-up before OSU. OSU will be coming off 3 tough games. Which way is better? We will find out on the 22nd, won't we?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 7, 2003 4:00:50 PM)
That's the news and I am out of here. I should be back next week. I kind of like the 3 p.m. Chat better. See ya! Enjoy the Game!

wizzle (Nov 7, 2003 4:01:02 PM)
Later Steve

tipdogusaf (Nov 7, 2003 4:01:10 PM)

Nate Salley (Nov 7, 2003 4:01:12 PM)
later steve

Susan (Nov 7, 2003 4:01:18 PM)
One thing I don't worry about at all with Tressel is that he'll have the team ready to conquer in Ann Arbor
