youngstown (Nov 14, 2003 3:07:51 PM)
Any word on D Scott's health coming into Saturday? I heard closer to 100% than he has been all year?
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:07:57 PM)
scores for tomorrow? I say 16-13, home team on a late Nugent FG
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:08:39 PM)
youngstown, Coach Tressel indicated that Scott should be as close to 100 percent, like you say, as he has been since he dominated against N.C. State. They need to get after Orton, but he loves to throw quickly.
SmellyCat (Nov 14, 2003 3:09:13 PM)
I hope Fox doesn't get abused all day.
SmellyCat (Nov 14, 2003 3:09:42 PM)
Pressure is the key tomorrow.
BuckNutty (Nov 14, 2003 3:10:17 PM)
Does Gamble's PT on offense increase again tomorrow?
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:11:26 PM)
SmellyCat, abused is a tricky word. Purdue will complete 35-40 balls tomorrow. Most will be in the 5- and 7-yard variety. It won't look good for the DBs, but red zone stops will be the key.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:12:42 PM)
BuckNutty, well there ain't no tomorrow if they don't win tomorrow. Maybe they will gauge that as the game goes on. Jenkins and Holmes are a nice tandem. Those 2 and Gamble would be even better. But you also need Gamble to help stop the spread, so don't expect him to play 60 plays on each side.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:13:05 PM)
They may not complete 35 passes. I erred. They will probably attempt 45 and complete 25-30 high percentage variety passes.
BuckNutty (Nov 14, 2003 3:13:16 PM)
That sounds better!
Susan (Nov 14, 2003 3:14:06 PM)
Our offense needs to control the clock to keep orton off the field as much as possible
BuckNutty (Nov 14, 2003 3:14:15 PM)
Should any of Purdue's receivers scare us? They don't seem to have a big homerun threat.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:15:10 PM)
Susan, I agree, a big day from your guy Flydell would be nice. But there are 4 fifth-year seniors in the front 7. Purdue's front is pretty good. If OSU can get 100 yards rushing and 225-250 passing, they should be in good shape. Block a punt for a TD would be nice, too.
SmellyCat (Nov 14, 2003 3:16:01 PM)
I'll never forget a few years ago when Purdue kept throwing to the tight end over and over and Courtland Bullard was helpless against it. I fear something like that tomorrow.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:16:25 PM)
BuckNutty, Standeford and Stubblefield are prolific. They'll each have 5-8 catches. They don't go deep that much. Most of it is underneath on screens and hitches. They have 2-3 other guys (Williams and another guy) who may be better deep threats.
Mike68 (Nov 14, 2003 3:16:39 PM)
SmellyCat- Their TE's aren't as good as Orton and Hawk is much better than Bullard
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:16:40 PM)
SmellyCat, don't fret the TE. He only has 9 catches all year.
BuckNutty (Nov 14, 2003 3:17:45 PM)
Do you think they will try to use the pass to set up the run like last week?
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:18:10 PM)
BuckNutty, OSU or Purdue?
Seabus (Nov 14, 2003 3:18:11 PM)
Steve why should we not be able to come out and throw on this defense? If we simply use the MSU gameplan we should be able to put the ball in the endzone on some deep routes.
BuckNutty (Nov 14, 2003 3:18:38 PM)
BuckNutty (Nov 14, 2003 3:18:49 PM)
I'm sorry again...
BuckNutty (Nov 14, 2003 3:18:50 PM)
BuckNutty (Nov 14, 2003 3:18:52 PM)
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:20:15 PM)
Seabus, I agree. I like Rogers as a cover guy. He is really not as bad as the Jenkins play showed. I watched last year's game again and he made a great break on a ball to tip it to Kotouvides for an INT. Other than Shaun Phillips, I don't see a major impact rusher. Neutralize him and Krenzel should have some time to work. The tackles will have their hands full. and I assume Joe will be kept in to help as well.
buckeyefan47 (Nov 14, 2003 3:20:47 PM)
whats up to everyone in the house? I am completely pumped for the game this sat. the bucks are going to go absolutely nuts!
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:21:04 PM)
BuckNutty, yes, I think Krenzel will be asked to make some plays early. But this game has total standoff (punting and field position and turnovers) written all over it, so don't expect to see the ball in the air that much.
buckeyefan47 (Nov 14, 2003 3:22:09 PM)
Steve, get pumped up baby the Bucks are primed and ready for a explosion baby!!!!!
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:22:21 PM)
buckeyefan47, hard to believe this is the 8th and final home game of the year. And it means so much, too. I hate to say it but a loss tomorrow really takes a lot of the sting out of next week because there is no way Indiana can defeat Purdue to still get OSU a share with a win at UM. The Big Ten championship, I guess, is that important and OSU can win one outright with 2 more wins.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:22:40 PM)
I am pumped.
Susan (Nov 14, 2003 3:23:37 PM)
me too..I've been playing buckeye cd's all day..in the car..in the house
BuckNutty (Nov 14, 2003 3:23:51 PM)
What recruits are expected to be at the game? Is there an updated list?
SmellyCat (Nov 14, 2003 3:23:54 PM)
I hope the crowd is deafening. That's the another key!
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:23:56 PM)
Just think of the guys you're saying good bye to tomorrow: Krenzel, Hartsock, Jenkins, Carter, Clarke, Stepanovich, Olivea, Bishop, Scott, Smith, Anderson, Allen, Sander and more. What a great group. Be happy for them and send them out the right way.
buckeyefan47 (Nov 14, 2003 3:24:33 PM)
every week on here I here people doubt these silver bullets. I can't help it but we need some serious energy today! I haven't been to bed since Wed. night I am completely going psycho I am so juiced right now it's not even funny!!!
Susan (Nov 14, 2003 3:25:06 PM)
yes, steve, tomorrow's going to be kind of sad, too. Those seniors are going to be missed
Seabus (Nov 14, 2003 3:25:08 PM)
Susan, I flew into Columbus last night and they were playing the band CD on the plane, it must be a big game.
Susan (Nov 14, 2003 3:25:36 PM)
they should play the band cd on all flights in and out of columbus
buckeyefan47 (Nov 14, 2003 3:25:39 PM)
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:25:45 PM)
BuckNutty, the only one I'm aware of a scheduled official for Florida WR Dajuan Morgan. He is also looking at Florida, Oklahoma and N.C. State. I'm sure lot of Ohio guys out of playoffs will be there.
BuckNutty (Nov 14, 2003 3:26:24 PM)
I hope the team is half as pumped as 47 lol
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:26:31 PM)
I agree (VBG)
Seabus (Nov 14, 2003 3:26:34 PM)
47 save some for the game, we need you harassing Orton all day tomorrow.
buckeyefan47 (Nov 14, 2003 3:27:04 PM)
Susan I love your enthusiasm you go girl! the Bucks are going to go nuts baby! all you guys give a big a** IO!
Susan (Nov 14, 2003 3:27:06 PM)
the crowd has got be deafening
BuckNutty (Nov 14, 2003 3:27:17 PM)
What do you think of Orton? Can he be rattled?
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:27:17 PM)
Susan (Nov 14, 2003 3:27:21 PM)
worthabuck (Nov 14, 2003 3:28:01 PM)
Steve and word on any injuries on their side...74 their big offensive lineman got banged up last week....I'm sure he'll play, but I think he is there go to guy on the line
Seabus (Nov 14, 2003 3:28:04 PM)
I see only two scenarios for tomorrow. We come out throwing to establish the run much like we did against MSU and we put up some big numbers or we have a replay of the game last year; a tight defensive battle won by the team who makes the plays down the stretch.
buckeyefan47 (Nov 14, 2003 3:28:31 PM)
oh yea boys! I love you guys you are completely insane I hope everyone is jacked up right now I am litterly screaming in my office here at the bank!
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:29:00 PM)
BuckNutty, Orton can be rattled. But he doesn't let it happen very often. He's a perfect Purdue system QB. He throws in rhythm. He knows who he is going to before the snap because of the way the defense is lined up. He takes a shotgun snap, 3-step drop and fires to that guy. He has the arm to make all kinds of throws. Key will be to clog passing lanes (Batted balls, etc.) and just get after him in coverage and with pass rush. OSU may give him anything he wants underneath, then pull the rug out in the red zone.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:29:28 PM)
worthabuck, I have not heard of any injuries for Purdue.
Susan (Nov 14, 2003 3:29:29 PM)
Orton has to get hit a few times..hit hard
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:30:04 PM)
Seabus, I think they want to do part one of your scenario, but something tells me this game will deevolve into part two.
buckeyefan47 (Nov 14, 2003 3:30:20 PM)
OH!OH!OH!OH!OH!OH!OH!OH!OH! i CAN BEARLY SIT DOWN! STEVE i HOPE i AM NOT DISTURBING THE CHAT BUT I CAN'T SETTLE DOWN RIGHT NOW! LETS GO BUCKEYES, LETS GO BUCKEYES!
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:30:32 PM)
BuckNutty (Nov 14, 2003 3:30:33 PM)
So there's no chance we come out strong tomorrow and win big?? Great....
youngstown (Nov 14, 2003 3:31:33 PM)
I gave up on winning big in '98
buckeyefan47 (Nov 14, 2003 3:31:37 PM)
BUCKEYE'S 34 PURDON'T 14! I AM AS SERIOUS AS A HEARTATTACK THE BUCK'S ARE COMPLETELY JACKED BABY! I KNOW THEY ARE!
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:31:40 PM)
BuckNutty, when has Ohio State done that? Purdue is pretty good, Michigan blistered them in a game that went completely against the Boilers. They lost to BGSU by 1 point on a late TD by the Falcons (sound familiar?). These teams are evenly matched. Just the truth, unfortunately.
youngstown (Nov 14, 2003 3:31:47 PM)
Thats with Tressel and YSU
Seabus (Nov 14, 2003 3:31:54 PM)
Steve how is their punt and kick return game?? Who fills that role for them?
BuckNutty (Nov 14, 2003 3:32:03 PM)
I understand. I wish the team would consider the health of some of their fans. My Dad's coming off bypass surgery, for example...
Susan (Nov 14, 2003 3:32:55 PM)
Does Purdue have the same fg kicker as last year? I remember he was under .500 in fg's last year..but hit em vs us after only making one in warmups.
buckeyefan47 (Nov 14, 2003 3:33:05 PM)
Bucknutty your dad will come through just fine the bucks are going to explode tomorrow my prayers are with you and your family!
BuckNutty (Nov 14, 2003 3:33:16 PM)
The Purdue kicker is excellent this year.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:33:37 PM)
Seabus, Jerome Brooks (22.7 average) handles kicks and Chambers (11.2 average and 1 TD) handles punts.
BuckNutty (Nov 14, 2003 3:33:44 PM)
Alright 47. I'll remember your guarantee...and thanks.
buckeyefan47 (Nov 14, 2003 3:34:07 PM)
Steve what's the score tommorow?
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:34:08 PM)
Susan, Lacevic is still there but he;'s been supplanted by Ben Jones (20 of 23 this year on FGs).
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:34:30 PM)
I said 16-13 good guys on a Nugent FG. (But I say Nugent FG almost every week, ha ha)
SmellyCat (Nov 14, 2003 3:34:36 PM)
Do we have a firm visit list of recruits tomorrow?
Mike68 (Nov 14, 2003 3:34:38 PM)
Don't forget that we need Wash St, TCU and LSU to lose tomorrow. All three of those will help us narrow the gap, if not overtake USC
BuckNutty (Nov 14, 2003 3:35:11 PM)
A USC loss wouldn't be bad either...
SmellyCat (Nov 14, 2003 3:35:21 PM)
I think Braxton is visiting. Does OSU still want him Steve?
Susan (Nov 14, 2003 3:35:23 PM)
does msu beating wisky help osu?
youngstown (Nov 14, 2003 3:35:28 PM)
All we really need is to win and an LSU win
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:35:31 PM)
SmellyCat, only one I know of is WR Dajuan Morgan from Fla. You know a lot of great underclassmen out of playoffs will be there.
Mike68 (Nov 14, 2003 3:35:38 PM)
True, but I'm not counting on Zona to help us out
Susan (Nov 14, 2003 3:35:47 PM)
arizona won't beat usc..ucla or oregon state could though in the next couple weeks
BuckNutty (Nov 14, 2003 3:35:53 PM)
Me either, Mike
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:36:07 PM)
SmellyCat, good question. If his head is on right, maybe they take him. He doesn't sound ready to decide, though.
Mike68 (Nov 14, 2003 3:36:16 PM)
I agree w/ you Susan. I have a feeling that UCLA gets them in the rivalry game
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:37:13 PM)
Susan, if I had to rate the degree of difficulty on USC's games, it would be Arizona easiest, Oregon State could be toughn but not a rivalry, UCLA not as good as Oregon State but it is their rival.
Susan (Nov 14, 2003 3:38:23 PM)
well..they did lose to cal so I'm thinking they are beatable
BuckNutty (Nov 14, 2003 3:38:35 PM)
Is there going to be a stock report from Duane up today?
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:38:55 PM)
i agree, if they win out and OSU wins out, USC will be 2-0 vs. ranked teams on game day and OSU will be 6-1. What a joke.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:39:26 PM)
BuckNutty, can't speak for Duane but I doubt it. We are closing OFS/Ohio High magazine and he is working on his write-up for that. Sometimes other things take precedence.
BuckNutty (Nov 14, 2003 3:39:56 PM)
Did I say other things shouldn't take precedence?
Mike68 (Nov 14, 2003 3:40:06 PM)
And only one of those wins came vs. out of conference opponents and that was their very first game.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:40:10 PM)
BuckNutty (Nov 14, 2003 3:40:15 PM)
buckeye59 (Nov 14, 2003 3:40:33 PM)
I don't see a USC loss, but if we can jump LSU in the polls, and WSU can drop off the qual win; The computers will take of our bucks.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:40:56 PM)
Mike, yeah, Auburn and Wash State are the 2 ranked teams they've played. Their league has flat sucked this year.
Mike68 (Nov 14, 2003 3:41:19 PM)
If we win out and get at least losses by LSU and WSU, I can see us edging USC by .08 or something very small
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:41:23 PM)
buckeye59, and OSU needs a quality win for beating Michigan. Can UM hang around top 10 with 3 losses?
Susan (Nov 14, 2003 3:41:26 PM)
the pac 10 teams forgot how to play defense
buckeyefan47 (Nov 14, 2003 3:41:30 PM)
usc/ who is that? they play a week schedule. they beat a wasu team that lost to Notre Dame wasu is severely over- ranked! usc is not for real!
Mike68 (Nov 14, 2003 3:41:50 PM)
scUM only hangs around if it is a low scoring tightly contested affair
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:41:51 PM)
Mike68, could come down to hundredths of points.
buckeye59 (Nov 14, 2003 3:42:07 PM)
It will be tough, but with the mighty falling every week, anything can happen.
Susan (Nov 14, 2003 3:42:26 PM)
the problem is 47, they have a pretty easy schedule and could end up with only the one loss and all the sports experts are so high on usc right now
SmellyCat (Nov 14, 2003 3:43:04 PM)
If we end up with 2 losses, do we have a shot at a BCS at-large game?
Mike68 (Nov 14, 2003 3:43:04 PM)
If we can get the losses by other teams this week, I expect Bucknuts to provide us w/ a detailed list of every team we need to win and every team we need to lose to help our SOS vs. USC's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mike68 (Nov 14, 2003 3:43:36 PM)
Cat- I guess only if the loss is at scUM in a very tight game
Susan (Nov 14, 2003 3:43:41 PM)
ncst could help us out
Mike68 (Nov 14, 2003 3:43:56 PM)
Go Derek Morris!!! (ha ha)
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:43:57 PM)
Mike 68, I'll get right on that (VBG)! Last Sat. night, I did sit there and start crunching the numbers as those teams (FSU and Va. Tech) were losing.
Susan (Nov 14, 2003 3:44:10 PM)
yes...tear em up, Derek.
buckeyefan47 (Nov 14, 2003 3:44:16 PM)
I am so sick of this style point crap! the poll voters need to open their god damn eyes. Let las vegas pick the two teams, they are the ones that truly know what is going on in college football. osu would destroy usc! they are pretenders!
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:44:22 PM)
Susan, that's right. A win over Florida State would be huge.
Mike68 (Nov 14, 2003 3:44:42 PM)
What could help us after our games are all completed is if BG can win the MAC title game. I'm looking for all the help we can get in terms of SOS
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:44:44 PM)
Iowa beating Minnesota would be a nice one, too.
Mike68 (Nov 14, 2003 3:45:21 PM)
Unfortunately Wisky couldn't help us vs. the Gophers last week.
Mike68 (Nov 14, 2003 3:46:07 PM)
Also, Wash beating Wash St next week would help us more than it would Wash St. Keep in mind Wash St's QB is out vs. Zona St this week
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:46:13 PM)
Mike68, BG can run table, beat Toledo and avenge the loss to Miami would be helpful. San Diego State is done. They have Colorado State and Air Force left. Washington has been a total disgrace. They may beat Cal, but will likely lose at home next week to Wazzu.
SmellyCat (Nov 14, 2003 3:46:35 PM)
That Wisky game still ticks me off. I bet if the weather was good we would have beat them like a drum.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:46:54 PM)
SmellyCat, everything aligned for Wisconsin that night.
Mike68 (Nov 14, 2003 3:47:00 PM)
And beat them like a red-headed step-child!
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:47:14 PM)
That is their only loss in 22 months.
SmellyCat (Nov 14, 2003 3:47:46 PM)
beat them like a drunken mother in law
Mike68 (Nov 14, 2003 3:47:57 PM)
Luckily we get Wisky at home next year and then they are off the schedule (along w/ Purdue) for JZ's junior and senior years. Too bad we didn't have those two off the sked this yr
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:47:57 PM)
buckeyefan47 (Nov 14, 2003 3:48:44 PM)
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:48:57 PM)
drunken mother in law, etc.
buckeyefan47 (Nov 14, 2003 3:49:02 PM)
Mike68 (Nov 14, 2003 3:49:12 PM)
Let's hope that the Bucks get a nice lead so that Scotty Mac can get a few series in his home finale tomorrow.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:49:29 PM)
That's one I'll drink to. He has deserved it.
buckeyefan47 (Nov 14, 2003 3:49:35 PM)
good point 68! that would be great
Mike68 (Nov 14, 2003 3:49:40 PM)
I would love to see a butt kicking and see Jim Otis Jr get one snap too!
SmellyCat (Nov 14, 2003 3:49:56 PM)
Any chance Brandon Joe gets 10 carries plus a few swing passes? Seems like he should be able to punch it in from the 1-2 yard line. He's a monster.
buckeyefan47 (Nov 14, 2003 3:50:21 PM)
easy 68! lets not get carried away! funny though
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:50:23 PM)
SmellyCat, maybe Branden Joe is the secret weapon. I love the kid. He could be a difference maker in this game.
Mike68 (Nov 14, 2003 3:50:32 PM)
Joe looked like he could give us a whole new dimension the way he ran last week. Use him in a single back set w/ 3 WR's or double TE's
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:50:42 PM)
Hey, Tiller is 0-and-forever at OSU and Michigan, right?
Mike68 (Nov 14, 2003 3:50:50 PM)
Knock on wood!
SmellyCat (Nov 14, 2003 3:50:56 PM)
We really need someone to get us that nasty 1-2 yards!
buckeyefan47 (Nov 14, 2003 3:51:28 PM)
1-44-1 against n.d. penn state mich. and osu on the road! great numbers!
Mike68 (Nov 14, 2003 3:51:29 PM)
Steve, which of the seniors do you think most lived up to his recruiting hype?
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:51:35 PM)
SmellyCat, I agree. Ross can't hold up if he gets pounded that hard for 60 mins. They need to pick and choose his spots and use Joe as the changeup. That's it it's settled.
buckeyefan47 (Nov 14, 2003 3:51:56 PM)
tiller for pres.!!!!!!
Mike68 (Nov 14, 2003 3:52:09 PM)
He could probably win as Gov in Indiana
Susan (Nov 14, 2003 3:52:35 PM)
I gotta run. See you tomorrow, Steve. Go Bucks!!!!
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:52:45 PM)
Mike68, Stepanovich was pretty highly regarded and had a great career (save for injuries). Obviously, Will Smith. Darrion Scott was kind of a big deal. Hartsock I did not hear great things about from my homies south of town, but boy did he have a great career or what?
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:52:52 PM)
See you Suze.
SmellyCat (Nov 14, 2003 3:52:52 PM)
Full house backfield with Joe, Stan White Jr and Tyree!
Mike68 (Nov 14, 2003 3:53:54 PM)
Scott is a classic example of getting an athletic kid and finding him a position. He came in as a MLB, went to DE and finally DT. I hope that we keep on bringing these kinds of kids in.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:54:39 PM)
Krenzel, obviously, another overachiever. Bishop was a USA Today All-USA guy who never made All-American but did what he could for 4 years. Anderson was never highly rated, but just brought his hard hat and lunch pail for 4 years.
SmellyCat (Nov 14, 2003 3:54:43 PM)
Steve, any clue how many early enrollers we might have in January?
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:55:24 PM)
SmellyCat, hard to say. You hear rumblings on Rehring, Davis (April), Freeman and others. I guess we'll see. The more the merrier, I say.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:55:51 PM)
Last call for alcohol. Any more ???
SmellyCat (Nov 14, 2003 3:56:17 PM)
Go Bucks! Let's kick some fanny like never before. Thanks, all!
SteveHelwagen (Nov 14, 2003 3:56:25 PM)
